Excerpts:
Senate Democrats emerged Friday night from days of negotiations to declare that they had reached a deal with at least three moderate Republicans and now have the votes to approve their own version of a huge stimulus package that President Obama says is critical to strengthening the nation's flagging economy.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., whom Obama defeated for the presidency in November, called it an "Orwellian experience" to hear Democrats refer to the deal as a bipartisan solution to the nation's economic problems. "I've been involved in a lot of bipartisan legislation around here," said McCain. "This is not bipartisan."

Feb. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Senators struggled to agree how to cut the $900 billion-plus financial stimulus plan sought by President Barack Obama hours after the chamber’s top Democrat expressed confidence a plan would be ready for a vote this evening.
Senate Democrats began a closed-door meeting at 5:30 p.m. Washington time to consider a potential compromise over spending cuts.
“We wouldn’t have to have a meeting if things were resolved, so I think the best way to say it is there is a proposal that is sufficiently fleshed out that we can have a caucus and discuss it,” Senator Kent Conrad of North Dakota said before he and the other Democrats convened their meeting.
