scales and green boxes under your avatars????
A question to moderators: what does this all mean? Are we being judged by somebody? if so, why?

It's OK. Don't worry. Now that Gareth is the admin in charge here, we've noticed he's been tweaking the forum settings a little bit. vBulletin has a lot of features you can turn off and on. I don't expect to see him back on the forum for another 10 or 12 hours.

It is a forum feature whereby you can give "kudos" to a poster for his or her post.
The problem starts because you can also leave negative feedback and it was disabled because back in the early days of the forum it was being abused in incredibly nasty ways.
Perhaps the current moderators have decided that now we are subscription, the likelihood of abuse is reduced and it can be renabled.

So Karen.. how does it work?
Ive clicked on the scales for a few people who have made great posts and clicked "I approve". Nothing changed.
Is it something like 'every 10 approvals earns a new green box or something'?
I see how this could lead to a unbalanced forum.. certain people suddenly being more important and others feeling left out or unloved.
Prepared to give it a go for a while, but I see how it could be abused potentially.

As some of you have no doubt noticed and commented on, you now see, once again, a green icon below a posters name.
The forums user reputation system has been re-enabled. It provides a way of rating users based on the quality of their posts. Users on the forum can add or subtract reputation points from other users by clicking the reputation link in their posts.
User reputations allow the users in this community to tell the forum which users are quality and which users are not. At a glance you can see the reputation a poster has gained in their time in the forum.
Good posters will gain reputation - bad ones will go the other way. So you know before you post a reply how good the reputation of the poster is.
The hope is the reputation system will encourage good quality posts :thumb_yello: and discourage the bad.

I have no idea how it works. I'll have to learn. And I see no scales - is that because I use Firefox?
I don't think there was any moderator feedback on this - Gareth just decided we could give it a go again, and hope it is not abused like it was last time. I missed all that happened last time as I was not yet a moderator.

:winksmiley02:And here I thought only God could judge????
I think we are all adult enough to decide a quality post for ourselves, it almost seems like some form of censorship. Isn't rating threads adequate for content worth checking out sufficient?

If I remember right they were removed for a good reason. Because people would abuse it, and do it anonymously. I think we're all past looking at little green boxes to determine a level of quality, or lack of. The reputation thing was removed and should stay that way. It's much to elementary.

Hi
I was about to make my first post for many months. The first thing I became aware of was that I started policing my thoughts instead of just pouring it out of my heart.
The "green box feature" feels bad, and should be removed IMO
Please don´t rate me as a bad poster for writing this... (see what I mean? :mad3: )
Well, it´s nice to be back on the forum, though

i have to agree with dantheman ... this feels very elementary ... i recall playing something of similarity in grade one ... recall we all became more fixated on the evaluation process rather than learning the lessons at hand ... why we were there in the first place ...
and we are doing this now?
are we not moving forward from this type of game playing ... to me this feels like we are going backwards ... particularly now ...
we are moving through huge planetary changes right now ... greater will the momentum be ... i can't see we'll have time to entertain ourselves with this game of old ... so much focus on judging our brothers and sisters ... there won't be time for it ... not like the old days ...
separating our selves as we once did gained no positive results and detained our evolution of moving onwards in oneness ...
respectfully ... i feel this newness to be very old ... a little silly at this point ...

I respectfully suggest that all changes to the forum set-up being anticipated by the Administrator should be announced to the forum ahead of time with the reasons for the change stated, and that our input should be solicited, before the change is made...
If that is too much to ask, at least announce to the forum that the change is being made and why...

Not it's not because of Firefox, it is because I use the Minty forum skin. I see a heart instead of scales.
Default is Avalon Electric. If you want something cooler on the eyes Minty is the way to go. If you can't read the lighter colored type in Minty, just select the area, then you can read it. The button is on the bottom left. To switch back the button moves to the bottom right.

I see everyone who has anything to say on the matter does not like this new reputation thing. But in the mean time ... I've located it in the FAQ
What is reputation?
Reputation is a way of rating users depending on the quality of their posts. If the administrators have enabled reputation, then the reputation icon will be visible in posts.
Reputation may be positive http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gif , negative http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/images/reputation/reputation_neg.gif or neutral http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/images/reputation/reputation_balance.gif. Negative reputation may only be given if the administrator has enabled this. Neutral reputation is only given when the person giving reputation does not meet the criteria set by the administrator to affect someone else's reputation.
How do I give reputation?
To give reputation, click on the reputation icon in the relevant post. This will reveal a form to complete with the reputation type and the reason for giving the reputation. If negative reputation is disabled then it will not be displayed in this form. You may not give reputation for the same post twice.
How do I know what reputation I have received?
You can view the reputation that you have received in your User CP (http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/usercp.php) (User Control Panel) where it is displayed at the bottom of the User CP page. Here you will see the latest reputation that you have received and whether this is positive, negative or neutral. Your total reputation will be shown as series of reputation indicators in your posts and profile. The more positive your reputation, the more positive icons will be shown. The more negative your reputation the more negative icons will be shown.
How much reputation is given? What is reputation power?
If the administrator has enabled this, the amount of reputation that each user will give (or take away if negative) is shown in the user's posts as 'Reputation Power'. The value of the reputation power is determined by the administrator and may increase over time depending on the settings they have applied.
What if I don't want anyone to see my reputation?
You can disable the display of your reputation by going to your User CP and selecting Edit Options. On this page you will find a check box labelled 'Show Your Reputation Level'. Un-checking this box will remove the display of your reputation and replace it with the Reputation Disabled icon. You can still give and receive reputation while your reputation display is disabled.

If we give people what they want...and tell people what they want to hear...does this increase the odds of being green? Does being thought provoking...contrarian...or just plain provoking...increase the odds of being red? Is quality, accuracy, and originality being evaluated? Is this a popularity contest? If I'm red...does that mean that I am being placed on yet another list? Will they come and get the red box people first? Are we making a mountain out of a box?

well, IMHO, it's pretty artificial. Friends who think someone has philosophical beliefs that agree with them will give a positive feedback. And the converse is also possible. Reps may be more beneficial on highly technical forums, where you have a specific, measurable in 3D outcome. Here it's more or a personality and a "who believes the same way I do" issue.
Given that, the most important thing, IMHO, is to read the posts and make your own mind up as to whether the information is valid for you or not.

There is something to be said for a good old pat on the back every now and then. My only concern is that it's going to affect the way some people might or might not post.
I like the focus on this forum and I guess I'm fearful of seeing it go down the tubes the way so many others have.
