New Tires Made of Oil from Orange Peels

by Trey Granger

Tire manufacturer Yokohama is now selling a model made with 80 percent non-petroleum material, substituting orange oil as the primary ingredient to make vulcanized rubber.

The new tire is called the Super E-spec™ and has already received the Popular Mechanics Editor’s Choice Award in 2008. Yokohama will initially market the tire for hybrid car models such as the Toyota Prius.

So when you screech your tires, will it have an Orange-Glo scent?

Great idea, but I see the same flaw in this that I do with bio-diesel. You have to start producing more crops to supply the demand for the new product.

That's why hundreds of thousands of acres of rain forest are stripped bare each year, to grow soybeans for bio fuels. Though at least oranges grow on trees.

I am still waiting for the tires with the cabon nano-tube technology in the rubber to come out. Supposedly they have race slick traction and high mileage tread wear. I guess they figured that they would sell less tires if they started making these.

With the orange peel tires, It is going to suck when the price of tires goes up because the orange crop was no good.
