Why is a stallion called an 'entire'

Answer, a stallion is 'entirely male'. They have no female attributes as other animals do. eg teats

http://mathildasanthropologyblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/przewalski.jpg

This is a przewalski horse :

http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Animals/AsiaTrail/fact-phorse.cfm

Pronounciation: sheh-val-skee

Physical Description: The coat of the Przewalski's horse ranges from brown to dun, with a pale underbelly and muzzle, a dark tail, a dorsal stripe, striped legs, and a dark, short mohawk–like mane. The head is large, and the body is short and muscular.

Size: The Przewalski's horse stands about 13 hands high at the shoulder (a little more than four feet) and has a head and body length of less than seven feet, with a tail close to three feet long. Adults can weigh between 550 and 750 pounds.

Geographic Distribution: Before their population dwindled, these horses spanned regions in Germany, Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Russia, Mongolia, and China.

Status: The World Conservation Union's Red List of Threatened Species listed the Przewalski's horse as extinct in the wild until 2008. Causes of extinction were hunting, harsh climate, loss of habitat, and loss of water sources to farm animals. However, successful reintroductuions qualified this species for reassessment in 2008, and they are now classified as critically endangered.

The Argentinians like Criollo horses. This looks like a rather unappealing one. "The breed dates back to a 1535 shipment of 100 Pure Bred Spaniards - Andalusian stallions coming from Cadiz, Spain, to the Rio de la Plata imported by Buenos Aires founder, Pedro de Mendoza." Wikipedia info

The second looks like a Quarter Horse, great for cutting and barrel racing.

Who knew?! That is very interesting Carmen! So many of these videos just did the goose bumps for me. Actually, I even got overwhelmed and (kind of) wept with eXchanger's Black Horses. That was something.

eXchanger - Carmen said in another post that black horses are uniquely enspirited (or something like that).

Let me tell you I could go on and on here, BUT...

Thanks for your responses. Susan, that video of the Black Horses is pure magic! No caste , I know how you love Black Horses.

My experience of Black Horses and also black cats is that they do appear to be a bit different, often agressive or troubled in some way. My daughter Hannah had a black mare we called Macy. She was an orphaned foal and was very spoilt having being reared by humans and not being subjected to a mothers natural discipline. So, as in a child reared with no walls of constraint of behaviour, she was very unsure of herself and agressive with other horses. She also thought she could boss any human around, that is, until she met my Hannah. I would watch Hannah from the house working with this stroppy mare. Macy standing on her hind legs pawing the air in front of Hannah. It just looked like a scene from "The Black Stallion" After many confrontations she finally bonded with Hannah and was a very willing, try her best for you, type of horse.

She was absolutely diabolical to put with other horses. She just beat the **** of them and had all other horses scared of her. She was also extremely jealous and hated Hannah riding any other horse. Her facial expressions were incredible, "if looks could kill!!'

Another of her little foibles was than she craved motherhood and would steal babies from any species, calves lambs!! I will never forget Macy walking toward me one day with a new-born lamb tottering at her big black hind legs. My daughter put Macy in a yard and quickly and carefully snatched the lamb back and gave it back to the mother. Macy was furious at losing her new baby, screamed around the yard, eventually jumping the fence, then another to get into where the ewes were, beat the **** out the ewe with 'her' lamb, and took the lamb back!!! It was a sight to behold, the big black mare with the tiny white lamb, being ever so careful with it.

She was a very safe horse to ride as she hated her rider falling off and refused to move forward well until she knew you could ride! Beginners were absolutely safe with her. I remember a beginner hanging under her belly when the saddle slipped once and Macy standing looking at this curious upside - down person as if to say "What the hell are you doing there!!"

Horse stories, I love em, and there is always a story to every horse!

Thanks Carmen for the great stories! I was raised around horses, and to me there is nothing like the smell of a horse barn! You, know, you are absolutely right about black horses and cats. Though, I will say that any horse with spots has a screw loose. BEautiful, but screwy.

I gave a solid black female kitten to my son as that was what he always wanted. That cat is quirky. She, raven, will let you pet her then suddenly turn and try to take off your hand. She is contentious, wants to be alpha cat due to my older female cat who tells Raven, "Not in your dreams cookie".

I got fed up with Raven attacking me one day and did knock her for a loop. She's never scratched or bitten me ever again, and her behavior is much better in general. She is quite a bit sweeter now, but still quirky.

I've always loved animals and had this connection that I know what they are thinking. They have very funny senses of humor.

http://images.teamsugar.com/files/usr/1/13254/thumbelina.jpg

Thumbelina, at a mere 17 inches tall and weighing only 60 pounds, is officially the world's smallest horse. Born as a dwarf to a miniature horse, she's a "mini of a mini," and as a foal she liked to hang out with the cocker spaniels rather than with normal-sized horses whose knees she reached to. Thumbelina will live only half the life of a regular miniature horse (maybe 17 years), but judging from this picture, she'll pack twice the cuteness into it. She's a real-life My Little Pony!

Wow. Check this. I was perusing horseys to post and searched dun (fer sumpin diff'ent): Zebra-Striped Dun

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_-umNqM-3I2Y/Slj0uvW6GrI/AAAAAAAAGLQ/oa7PTomi4Bk/s400/bosszebra.JPG

All of these are considered "primitive" markings because dun is the color seen in early cave paintings of horses, in Przewalski's horse (an Asian wild horse), and in many American mustangs. Obvious zebra stripes on the legs are less common but also go along with the "primitive" dun gene.

This little mare Blue Hors Matine, wowed the crowd with her performance. Incredibly, she did not win this competition, the judges marked her down cos she 'swished' her tail! I posted this ages ago but I think she deserves another outing!

Thanks folks for your contributions to this thread. Tone those vids were hilarious! I can see that we have many horselovers on Avalon. Susan Im so sorry you edited your posts out. Ive been away from Avalon lately and only just got back to looking at this thread.

Something I have been observing for sometime now is how the animals around us act out our projected attitudes. I have found that as I correct or change an attitude in me the animals are different also. It really is obvious I guess, cos animals pick up on energies much more naturally than we do. For instance, my current horse displayed fearful, shying behaviour when ridden out on his own. This was a worry/fear for me as at my age when I fall its more like a splat! than a bounce!!!! Well, with my projected attitude of fear, we were like an accident waiting to happen. It wasnt until I fully understood this and gradually changed it that the horse relaxed and trusted me. So, fearful thoughts attract and manifest fearful behaviour. This holds true in all of life. Like attracts like.

Cheers

Thankyou Gio, that was wonderful!

Gio is responding to the news I gave him yesterday. The news that we had to have my daughter's horse Seeker, put down. I brought the mare to my place where we met the vet. I was very hopeful that with the proper care we may have brought her through, but the vet gave us no hope. We did want to see her in continuing pain so I think that we made the right descision.

Seeker was a lovely calm anglo-arab mare, dark bay with a white blaze. A beautiful mare.

Her spirit now flies free.:tears:
