There is a Hindu story

about the beginning of time...

According to this legend:

"Brahma the Creator, took the cosmic egg (Hiranyagarbha) into his hands. It was from the Hiranyagarbha, that the sun had been born. And from this same Cosmic Egg, Garuda the golden mythical creature, of human and bird appearance, had burst forth in a radiant brilliance. Holding the two halves of the egg, one in each hand, Brahma breathed on them and chanted Saman (seven holy melodies). Within the essence of this ritual, Airavata, the cosmic white elephant emerged from the shell in his right hand. Seven male elephants followed. From the shell in Brahmas's left hand, Abhramu and seven females elephants emerged. These sixteen original elephants formed eight pairs and are the ancestors of all elephants, the elephants of heaven and of earth. They became the foundations of the earth, holding positions at the four main compass points and the intervening points.

They are known as the dig-gajas, that is the elephants of the directions of space.

Within each animal, Brahma placed a secret, sacred mystery.

Within the elephant he concealed wisdom."

How the Elephants lost their wings

In the ancient text on the science of elephants, the Gaja Sastra, (600-500 BC), it is told:

Initially elephants had wings. They moved through the heavens floating freely as clouds, or maybe flying with purpose, at times descending to stroll on earth. One day several elephants landed on a tree above the sage, named Dirghatapas (Long Austerity), who was tutoring his students. The weight of the elephants was too much for the branch of the tree. It snapped and broke. The elephants unperturbed calmly took another perch. Meanwhile the branch fell to earth killing some of the students. The sage, furious at this indiscreet behaviour, placed a curse on all elephants.

In future they would:

Be wingless and condemned to walk the earth
Forfeit their divine power
Be subjected to human beings and be the vehicles for kings and nobles
Have two tusks instead of four
Lose knowledge of their own might
Play with dust
Burn with fire inside their stomachs
Perspire within their bodies
The Dig-Gajas, those elephants stationed at the cardinal points were not cursed. They appealed to Brahma on behalf of their descendants. They were concerned that their kin, unused to earthly conditions, may be vulnerable to the afflictions and diseases of earth. Moved at their trepidation for their relations, Brahma assured the dig-Gajas that in time he would send to earth a sage, knowledgable in elephant lore and well being. In this way Brahma would guarantee the earthly elephants health, safety and longevity. Satisfied with Brahma's promise, the dig-gajas returned to their respective positions at the cardinal points.

Their offspring descended to earth.
