I know there are a bunch of techie guys on this forum and I know there are folks with questions...

I'm not trying to get off the reason for this forum....doing this may help folks get on this forum or stay on if they are having PC problems.

I can't weave a basket but I can solve a lot of PC problems.....and if I can't ...there is a lot of guys on here that can.

In other words....trying to give back :original:because I have gotten so much from you guys.

Thanks

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite laptop that is about 3 years old and uses Windows XP. I don't have huge amounts of software or files on it and try to delete files or remove software I am not using. I subscribe to Trend Micro Internet Security which updates itself regularly and runs regular virus and spyware scans. I defragment my hard drive regularly.

This computer used to be pretty fast but it seems to have gotten gradually a little slower. I don't understand why and would like to speed it back up.

On the lower right by the clock are the programs that run automatically on start up......

They can also be memory hogs...not hard drive memory but resident memory.

Run your mouse over them...If you aren't using them...right click and say not to run at start up..

But If I'm not using..I usually uninstall.....thanks

Hope it helps

Thanks, I thought of that before, but when I right click on them, I have the option to "exit". But then they just run again when I restart the computer. Another problem is I am not sure what some of these programs do, and whether I need them running or not.

Usually...things like printers....abobe acrobat reader.....virtual drives install things you "might" use every once in a while.

I usually uninstall things that I know I have the software for in case I need to put it back...

But proactively I don't blow through the install process for software...I want to make sure I uncheck...Start with Windows...or Load automatically.

If you have some examples of what's loading...I might be able to tell if you need them...thanks

Stargazer: thank you for giving back to our little community.

About a week ago, I had started listening to a you-tube vid of Andreai Boccelli and about 2 mins into the vid, the music stopped, & in its place came a extremely loud siren type of sound. Actually it sounded a lot like a fire siren. It seemed to be everywhere in my laptop, the sound was piercing, & to tell the truth, I was scared the computer was going to blow up. I tried everything to shut it down, but the computer was frozen and i could not stop it. It seemed to have gone on for the whole length of the vid. Then it stopped. & everything went back to normal. It freaked me out, as I've never experienced anything like that before. I posted on here about it, but no one knew what would have caused it. Got any clues Stargazer.

That's a good one..

First impression would be a hardware lock on your sound card....

The sound card malfunctioned and caused the operating system to lock.

Does it play music (mp3) with no problems??

Is it a laptop or desktop??

The software that runs the videos is a flash player which could also have an error..

Here is a page to re-install

let me know..thanks

No....it may have been a one time thing...Techies usually look for a trend of the same problem before making any changes...let me know if it happens again..

May have just been a problem with the video itself....Star

Hello, Stargazer 1965! Thank you for your kind offer!!! Long-time lurker...I, coincidentally, am having a computer issue when you posted...we have a brand new HP Pav Elite e9150t...from the "get go" it has "blue screened" on us or is freezing...nothing much loaded on it...we sent it in for repair...still happening (not as frequent as before)! Believe it or not it is the second system in a row that has done this...first we purchased one...it "blue screened"/froze...they told us they would exchange it for the e9150t...same situation...:wall: There are no real calamities, we don't loose data, but it is highly annoying to keep rebooting...and, at this level of machine...it just shouldn't be doing this!!! What do you think? Thanks in advance!

Blessings!

:mfr_lol: Thats just silly.

However Micro$oft needs to go so here is a excellent alternative.
In my opinion Linux Ubuntu is the best Operating system for your money! (Its Free) It has "windows" type environment, can run firefox, messaging apps like skype or messenger and much much more.

I wouldn't take that file sharing threat too seriously. There are many things in place to keep your pc's relatively secure. It's probably Mac propaganda.:lmfao:

As for switching to Linux, you would be starting from scratch so there are no passwords and settings to worry about. web passwords and users names are not effected by you changing your system. I would save your passwords and bookmarks from firefox but other than that, its good to go.:thumb_yello:

Hello, again, Star.! Thank you so much for getting back to me! Greatly appreciated! It is...drum roll, please...the dreaded Vista 64-bit. Believe it or not (like we explained to HP) we just have the mouse and keyboard that came with the system connected. Until I know what is going on, I do not want to put extras on this, be it hardware, software, files, etc....yikes! In so far as printing is concerned, the setup is via mapped network drives for printers...only way we could get the printing to work (print sharing thing ).

Best regards!

There are 3 items I use on ALL pc's under my care to keep them safe and all are free to download and use. I highly recommend these and only these.

Anti Virus - AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0
Award winning protection to meet your basic security needs
It’s always been our philosophy at AVG that everyone has the right to basic computer security at no charge. And our 80 million users think we’re doing a pretty good job. So if you’re planning to spend time online and you regularly exchange files with friends, check us out."
http://free.avg.com/ww-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition

Spyware - Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer. http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

Malware - Lavasoft Ad-Aware - 10 years of malware experience combined in one dynamic application. Ad-Aware offers radically improved performance and efficiency, along with comprehensive malware protection. With real-time monitoring, threat alerts, and automatic updates you can rest easy knowing that you are protected. OK; I'll take you up on your "help" offer. On this thread > http://projectavalon.net/forum/showthread.php?t=17636 ~~ you can see what I was trying to do. In post #2 Karen picked up on my edit difficulties, etc. And she just went ahead and did it for me, and her instructions in post #2, I've not been able to decipher. Still trying. I'm going to start a post on this thread, trying to install the same vid from YouTube, again. Maybe doing some things that I can ascertain from Karen's instruction. We'll see what happens.

One other forum I'm on a lot (a motorcycle forum)~~I've done quite a few photo images from web hosts on that forum, and when you preview the post, you don't get the pic~~but, yeah, the address and codes are all there~~you just have to guess and hope that it does go thru on the final submit of the post..........and it always does, now.

To insert a youtube video into a post:

insert the file number of the video between the youtube tags
For example the link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_Y26JNd3g4

then the file number is Y_Y26JNd3g4

so typing the text-->http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/picture.php?albumid=532&pictureid=7957
gives you this:
Y_Y26JNd3g4

Make sure there are no spaces.

To enter a photo from the web click http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/images/editor/insertimage.gifin the edit window and enter the full address.
If you want to post your own photo you need to upload to your personal album and then link it the way i described above :)
You can create Albums of images that are linked to your public profile. Albums can be created by visiting the User Control Panel (http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/usercp.php), and clicking on the 'Pictures & Albums' link, and then clicking on 'Add Album'. Each album can have a title ('Joe's Holiday to Nepal'), a description ('A bunch of photos from my recent adventure') and can be of three different types: Public, Private or Profile.

Public albums can be viewed by anyone
Private albums can only be viewed by site staff (moderators, administrators) and your Friends and Contacts (info (http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/faq.php?faq=vb3_user_profile#faq_vb3_friends_conta cts))
Profile albums are viewable only by you. However, you can use the images to customize your public profile (info (http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/faq.php?faq=vb3_user_profile#faq_vb3_profile_custo m))

Hope this helps :)

I don't know (I'm a Mac user) ...

posted it here hoping it may be helpful...

Hi Nagual, even Macs not safe, anymore. I would be vary on any upgrade from Apple more than 10.5.5, as well as of their new Leopard Snow. Watch here why:

Apple, which makes the Mac OS X operating system. "We work with a number of U.S. government agencies on Mac OS X security and collaborated with the NSA on the Mac OS X security configuration guide," said Apple spokesman Anuj Nayar in an e-mail.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/01/08/AR2007010801352_pf.html

Side issue, Apple patented a new technology to bug you for pressing a button or click on screen, while you working, listening music, etc. If you don't they will shutdown your device:

In an application filed last year and made public last month by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Apple is seeking a patent for technology that displays advertising on almost anything that has a screen of some kind: computers, phones, televisions, media players, game devices and other consumer electronics.

More details here (need subscription):
http://www.nytimes.com/auth/login?URI=/2009/11/15/business/15digi.html&OQ=_rQ3D5Q26refQ3Dbusiness&REFUSE_COOKIE_ERROR=SHOW_ERROR

If they will start to apply this, they are not braver than M$hit, really!

Likewise, seems that the Linux is the way but not Novel, Red Hat or the big brands. Ubuntu, I'll not be so sure as is so popular.

Thanks, I thought of that before, but when I right click on them, I have the option to "exit". But then they just run again when I restart the computer. Another problem is I am not sure what some of these programs do, and whether I need them running or not.

Go to Start-Run type in msconfig ENTER
Go to startup TAB
uncheck everything you do not want to start with the system
apply
ok
restart
after next boot - check u do not wish to be informed again

Also check your physical memory capacity (start-mycomputer-r.clicl-properties)

Than check the usage (start the task manager-performance TAB)

If your memory usage is bigger than physical memmory...than might be one of the problems. You want too much out of the PC. You can enlarge the windows "swap" file...or you can just accommodate to your PC speed.

Re-installing the entire system helps a lot.

Also if you might be infected there is a good free tool called ComboFix
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
(backup your data before)

Also anti virus programs are more like placebo pills.

hope this helps

If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer. http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

I have a DVD at home from which I want to take a short portion and use it in a thread. I don't want to upload it to Google video in order to get access to the video for my post.

I was thinking in terms of using the "Attach Files" function (under "Additional Options") that we have when we type posts. These are the "Valid file extensions" available to us: bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg pdf png psd txt zip.

Is there a file extension on this list that has anything to do with a DVD?

And if so, what software would I need to make this happen?

Lavasoft Ad-Aware used to be known (probably still is) to "overlook" the infestation if one can stimulate them high enough.

Spybot - Search & Destroy, is a nice thing. ComboFix is an "upgrade" of spybot - much more faster method of detection.

At this moment I know for at least one problem that F-secure can not but ComboFix can detect and remove.

FREE Anti Whatever can be worse than nothing.

Those are picture and text formats...no video

Let me do some looking...

My knee jerk response would be to edit a video file and post it..

Nope, the embed feature only works with Youtube as this forums admin created the [youtube] tag for that purpose. if you want to share a video here you can either link it from wherever you store the file online (there are many file hosting providers) or upload to youtube and embed it with the youtube tag.
Sorry, those are your only options.

No, the only items that can be embedded here are pictures from anywhere
and video from YouTube only.
Audio or Videos from anywhere else will not embed, so posting a link is the only option.

Mudra,

Here's an example of how to do it, okay.

This is a regular youtube video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSEidIPD66Y

Do you notice after the "=" sign, the letters and numbers are in bold.

All you do is copy those numbers after the equal sign (bold), don't copy what is before.

Then put it between these bracket codes, below:

Also, if you get this after the video number, for example: &feature=topvideos

Delete that too, if it shows up.

Hope this helps.

The one where we enter URLs ?

2) which key on my keyboard makes these special brackets that wrap " you tube " . I only know these ones ( ....) ?

Yeah, from your browser's URL bar, just copy the video number, it comes after the equals sign.

2) which key on my keyboard makes these special brackets that wrap " you tube " . I only know these ones ( ....) ?

you mean these [[[ ]]]] ?

On my keyboard, it comes right next to letter P

Well its good that you can at least insert the using one of the buttons in the "compose post".

But it still doesn't work?

Have you made sure the video number is accurate? .. you must NOT include/copy "XJ0_VU5Kqyg[b]&feature=topvideos"

See the part in bold, do not copy that part.

I think you already understand this, but just to make sure.

This is an example of how do it exactly:

XJ0_VU5Kqyg

The result:

XJ0_VU5Kqyg

It will be blank (white square) if you make even the slightest mistake with the video number.

insert URL

and an additional " switch editor mode " with Firefox

This might help

If you click on wrap (quote,php,code...etc) tags....you will get the [ ] with something written inside (depends on what you click). Delete that and write youtube in 1st and /youtube in 2nd

Mudra if you are using English language (for the keyboard) than the [ ] is on the letters right of P.

If you are using some other language for your keyboard the sign [ is most likely somewhere else or requires the combination of keys to show it s*hift + something for example...

If you have a mac...than it might be something else...cant help with anything that relates to macs.

Well I'm using the "standard editor".

You don't need enhanced interface to post youtube vids.

I thought this may have been the source of your problem, but when I tested myself and switched to 'enhanced' on my account, its the same result, I am still able to post videos.

Guess the real problem is I'm not too familiar with Mac. So I don't know how it looks or how to configure with your system.

dAkapacity, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

You know what...I got this one also...

It was embedded in an AD running on a site I visited.

I got rid of it in about 15 minutes but I don't recommend the methods to a normal user.

I had to run in safe mode...kill a few programs running and edit the registry.

Not pretty....

But I would go with Spregs advice about changing virus scan programs...
I went with Micro Trends AV and the next time that occurred...it blocked it.

Should I or can I upgrade with a few new cards

Depends...if it is older than 3 or 4 years we can only (sense) discuss upgrading RAM.

If you for example wish to change the CPU, you also have to change the motherboard and that is practically buying a new PC...etc Also with the change of motherboard also comes the change of slots....and hardware you can or can not connect.

RAM upgrade can make your PC run faster but do not expect too much. You can only upgrade if you have a free slot on your motherboard...or if you replace one of the current inserted sticks with a new one with more memory. Also the new RAM should be of the same type and frequency as the old one.

etc...

or

You can simply invest cca 600EUR into new PC and it will work wonders. Try to get at least 2 year guarantee. If you want to play new PC games and if you want to play all the latest and future to be released games the cost can be 2 to 3 times more.

Do not buy anything from Sony.
Do not buy Vista.
You only need 64bit system if you have more than 4gigs of RAM.
64bit systems tend to have some compatibility problems - not all programs work

If you intend to buy a laptop i recommend Toshiba or Lenovo...price range 1000EUR should get you a nice laptop. Laptops are not intended for games!

Freedom....I usually recommend buying a bare bones system but I have the knowledge to put it together and add the operating system...That runs me about $300 American dollars

If you are a normal user...changing processors...adding memory can be tricky.

You can usually get a netbook at Walley World for around $200

If you have model numbers and the year you purchased the Brontosaurus...I can recommend a path.

I've said that before...first 8 tracks then albums....here comes cassettes...and I put my foot down as I purchased those CD's and I refuse (ha) to get the MP3....(hate being told what I am suppose to do)

But I am logical enough to know that I can't keep throwing good
money after bad....(that free world better hurry up and get here)

so....I got this in 2000;

Dell Dimension DIM4300 Pentium 4
only 1.60 GHz 640 MB of RAM 32 bit
Microsoft Windows XP service pack 3

I don't play video games and don't think I will...
I do watch a lot of videos and play a bunch of music
(have some nice Harman/Kardon speaker system)
and I take photographs etc......so to me its an over glorified
word processor or typewriter as we called them at one time...
with a TV and Stereo too boot......

And I don't know squat about them but could install new cards
and boards as I have been inside them before...but other than
that and throwing in a disc or two or hollering for some help....

I would like a new computer but I don't like Wally world at all
avoid them like the plague....and I like my big screen....hate all
the cords everywhere! So I guess I could be a candidate for a
new laptop...its just not high on the list right now so if it could
wait for another year that might be better.....

My biggest question is I have all this wonderful stuff saved on my
computer and I would hate to loose it....what can I do and is it easy
to transfer?

Thanks guys.....much respect for your being brainiacs....
much LOVE and many BLESSINGS for you......Freedom

Buy a 2,5 or 3,5 external hard drive if you have large amounts of data, or buy for example a 16gig USB key.... put your data on it....

Thank You for this information....I appreciate it. :wub2:

I have another question...do you think my system will eventually crash
and never return? Does that happen because the rest of computer land
keeps updating and mine can't handle it? This has happened to me before
I got this one.....

Just how long is a computer suppose to last? I would really like one of those computers that I saw in the movie Avatar...with the 3-D screen that wraps around....now that would be cool...and if the sold them at Wally World...I might go there to purchase one if they would sell one for a few beans....:lmao::lmfao::roftl:

I have been having a lot of problems with Firefox over the last month or two. When I try to load a page......it comes up "firefox not responding"....& of course I get frustrated after waiting 10mins..........then I'm trying again & again & my screen freezes for another ten mins. I swear sometimes, I can try to open a link & go vacuum my entire house, come back & its still trying to load. I feel like this :wall: right now with my laptop.

Yesterday Firefox popped up with a update to 3.6 version, which I did. But that little upgrade took out my mini program eQuake alert:nono: gone, gone, gone. I tried to download it again, but its not compatible with the new upgraded Firefox.......:wall:. I miss my equake alert. Oh yea and my computer is so slow...:nono:

Guys, got any pearls of computer wisdom. Save me please from computers?

Oh. my laptop is Dell Inspiron 6400, (2MB/1.73GHz/533MHz) then this: 1GB, DDR2, 533MHz 2 D1mm for Inspiron. Got it Mar. 2007.

Site: http://www.lavasoft.com/ Download: http://download.cnet.com/Ad-Aware-Free-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

IT security is my speciality and I advise everyone here on Avalon to run their browsers sandboxed - http://www.sandboxie.com/ or use Geswall http://www.gentlesecurity.com/ this will stop any drive by infections.

Download WOT (WEB SITE ADVISOR) http://www.mywot.com/

Use an anti-virus program that suites your needs,no anti-virus program is the best. Avast http://www.avast.com/en-gb/index and as mentioned above AVG http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage or Avira http://free-av.com/ there are many others but watch out for rogue software. If you use sandboxie or geswall you should be protected from anything and everything that the web throws at you. I have used both sandboxie and geswall in a test environment using hardcore trojans , malware, rootkits and rogues and never been infected.

All the products I have mentioned above are FREE.

I personally use Comodo Internet security & Geswall.

Comodo is free, you can download it here http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/free-download.html

Use only one anti-virus, one firewall at a time.

If you have any virus problems please drop me a line and I'll help you if I can.

Blue hand.

Freedom...There is always a chance of turning it off one day and it will never come back.....But there is a chance of that with a brand new one.

Like Spreg said...Get you a thumb drive and BACK UP everything you would not want to loose...Then if it never comes back...then you have everything you hold dear

Sounds like you want to wait to doing any upgrades ...thats fine...JUST MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP...pictures...documents...movies...

..so if you want to keep....Thumb drives are cheap.

Peace Y'all

If it will crash you just re-install it. You can also attempt to get the data using stuff like bart, live cd etc... or just pluging your hd into other pc via usb

but it is always better to have an up to date backup

It will last as long as the mechanic parts will work - like people... dragon or otherwise heheheh Hmm so much "fun" (reference to some other thread)

No....its not site specific....it can be any site. I test that out....didn't matter.

Maybe there is a lot of cookies stored

I happened to come across this article by George Ure of HPH. on cookies. Would like your feedback on this software.....because I was thinking of downloading it, to see if it cleans things up. But it might be for more sophisticated users.

Cookie Video

The folks at Maxa Research have put together a short video (sound track by guess who?) that shows the Maxa Cookie Manager. You can see it here.
http://www.maxa-tools.com/video.php?aref=32&v=2

I don’t usually get all whipped up about software, but this is one of those dandy tools that just simply works great. First thing I put on my new computer when I got it was Avira Anti-virus and Maxa Cookie Manager (MCM). Either follow the on-screen download instructions of simply click:

http://www.urbansurvival.com/setupMCMstdGU.exe

Once you try it out, to upgrade to the fully functioning version, just click the upgrade button (!) on the upper right hand side for the $35 unlock to get it to remove even those nasty and highly intrusive ‘non-browser specific’ cookies. Bonus: You computer may run faster.

Not for Mac’s: MCM does support the Safari Browser, but that does not mean it is compatible with Mac OS. Maxa-Tools only support the Windows world….so far. Give them time…

I've seen cookies affect a certain site not usually across the board.

Sounds like a connection issue.

Can you try another PC on your network....Say a friend with a laptop.

That way If they have the same problem...you need to contact your service provider....SG

Hello Again.....

I think I have everything that I want to save backed up on the USB drive. What next....

I was able to play music thru the computer but now nothing...I tried at least two dozen times to uninstall/install the adobe flash player...no go.

Is my computer giving me grief because the "UniBlue" program I purchased last year...ran out? Would it be a good idea to get something like that again? A program to fix/update drivers and speed up my computer?

Please advise...I appreciate your attention to this matter.....

Much Love and eternal gratitude......Freedom

thanks for all the great help you are doing with this issue...

I have a couple of things I can't figure out ...

1) there are some times when I need to hard reboot... and when the chkdsk does its thing, it converts lost clusters into files. Do I need to fix them in the register (I don't know how to do that) or can I just find which folder they are place in and delete them? my laptop is getting slower and slower in just booting up... is this causing the slowdown? *and shoud I defrag first?

2) I normally use firefox for browsing, but I can't do a realplayer download of a video off of the net with the mozilla browser, so I had been using IE7, but that quit working a couple of weeks ago... I even tried to reinstall that and then tried to upgrade/install the IE8... can you tell me how to get it working again or maybe there is a free video-downloader program you could direct me to?

thanks again...

There can be many reasons for this....what i would do is simply save my data and re-install the system...since u have a laptop make sure u have all the drivers first....if that is a problem for you...you can check the system for viruses http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix you can defrag, you can use cc-cleaner....you can set manual scan disk...etc.

2) I normally use firefox for browsing, but I can't do a realplayer download of a video off of the net with the mozilla browser, so I had been using IE7, but that quit working a couple of weeks ago... not sure what the problem is here...it would seem u can only use IE since the site you are using is most likely asp and only supported in IE ....do not know what exactly you wish to do but i do not have this problems...rarely i encounter or wish to have anything to do with real player...

if IE stopped working this can be a serious sign of a serious problem...there a millions of reasons for this...and it has most likely to do with number 1 question

thanks again...

have fun
