It does look like the slag that is on my land here in NC... Near my spring.
A blacksmith occupied this land in the early settlement of this area... working near the spring and resulting in debree of slag. I didn't watch it all but I'd be interested if he's broken it open to see the inside?
Anywho, It looks like slag to me.

That is one amazing find. I wish I could see it close-up to see all the animals he described that show up. I wonder how old they are and what was used to make them.
What a shame that he has been ignored for so long.
