Earthian, Northern Boy - Haven't read through your links completely, yet. It seems to me that alternative economic models (e.g. cooperative pools, ethical investing) share something in common with Islamic restrictions on interest (riba).
'The Arabic word Riba refers to an amount that is charged on the principal used. Riba is made up of three elements. The first is excess or surplus over and above the capital of the loan. The second is the determination of this excess rate in relation to time. The third is that a transaction is conditional on the payment of a predetermined surplus.'
Kind of throwing sex in here, why not, chi, sexual energy and all that ...
Abdullah ibn Hanjalah related that the Prophet said: A dirham of Riba (interest) knowingly taken by a man is a sin worse than committing Zina (fornication) 36 times (Ahmad, Daraqutni).
