This could be the worst disaster, Since the tsunami in 2004.

Soon after, however, Bellerive told CNN that "I believe we are well over 100,000" dead, while Haitian Sen. Youri Latortue said it could be 500,000. Both admit they have no way of knowing. Other officials said it was too early to give an accounting of the toll.

Aid workers reported widespread destruction and suffering.

"It's the most horrific thing I've ever seen," Bob Poff, a Salvation Army worker in Port-au-Prince, told MSNBC. "We have to get food and water" quickly, he said, in describing conditions that range from stifling heat to numerous aftershocks. "We're trying to stay alive."

I wonder if there are alternative news links where we can get accurate info on this crisis? I don't trust anything on mainstream media for obvious reasons.

However, I am noticing a distinct apathy to this particular countries suffering....unlike the Indonesia tsunami which seem to garner the attention of the whole world that resulted in an amazing outpouring of love, financial aid, etc.

Have we become densitized to such trajedies? Are we jaded from caring & giving, & are now isolating our hearts from such events? So many questions I have.

Tks Joe for the update....I don't have tv.

Glad to hear the good news, now I hope the aid/monies will actually get to the people & their homes can be rebuilt.

Haitian earthquake a catastrophe: Jean

Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean, who was born in Haiti, said she spent a difficult night trying to get through to family, friends and Canadian diplomats on the island country following Tuesday's earthquake.

She said she's been trying to get through to Haiti since 5 p.m. Tuesday.

"We're seeing a major catastrophe for people who are of Haitian origins," said Jean, who came to Canada when she was 11.

The governor general made the comments Wednesday during a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Chief of Defence Staff Walter Natynczyk, Defence Minister Peter MacKay, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon and the head of Haiti's diplomatic mission in Canada.

"We feel devastated because there are so many things that we are seeing that have been destroyed that represent so much in our culture, our history," Jean said. "To see so much suffering, so much distress, is just unbearable.

She did find it reassuring to see the humanitarian response coming from Canada and other countries.

Canada has pledged to send its disaster response team to the island, and is deploying HMCS Halifax and HMCS Athabaskan.

Harper said the first priority is to help those people who can be saved.

It is. I've been following it since 30 minutes after the quake yesterday. It's probably hundreds of people who are buried alive.

I believe its more like thousands?

I hope not. I meant buried and still alive after 24 hours. Now it's a race against the clock to pull these people out. I think they're assumed dead after 4 days.

I live in Puerto Rico which is close to the Hispaniola. I truly feel for all my brethren that is suffering right now in Haiti. Here in the island we are starting to organize food and clothing drives to be sent ASAP but in the now we can all send our love to them, you pick your best method, as they sorely need it.

when I wrote my post, there was no news of any country offering help, perhaps they were gathering up the troops......besides that not exactly what i was referring to.

You seem quick to jump.....cool your jets.

A lot of private corporations are making donations. The biggest I've seen so far is this one:
http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/Digicel-Group-Donates-US-5-Million-for-Urgent-Relief-Efforts-in-Haiti-1101141.htm
KINGSTON, JAMAICA--(Marketwire - January 13, 2010) - Digicel Group, the fastest growing mobile company in the Caribbean and new entrant to the Central America market, is donating US$5 million in cash to support the urgent relief efforts needed following the widespread devastation caused by the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti yesterday.

Quick to jump? I think not. I was merely surprised by your post. However, your post seemed quick to criticize a response that was already in the works.

Until mass teleportation goes into effect, it will take some time for help to arrive.

I know what you were referring to. People are helping.
