Is anyone on the forum from Detroit? I would like to know how much if any spin is put on this video. As soon as the guy started talking about party politics I got discouraged, and the images and video show some pretty dramatic loss.. but who knows it may/may not be a good representation.

Me too. That's why I posted it.
If it's not going too well for someone, chances are he doesn't have Internet anymore to come here and talk about it. Detroit members who can read this and comment are the ones who still have a computer, so they might say spin is put on the video. That doesn't mean their neighbors are in the same position.
Financial collapse is hapenning both geographically and individually. Whole towns will have problems at the same time, while elsewhere it could be some families or individual one at a time, while their neighbors feel everything is ok.

I am originally from the suburbs of Detroit, and was there
August of 2009 visiting family and friends.
It appears the video shows a number of the areas that are
in bad shape-and there are many.
However, there are many decent areas within proper Detroit,
and many very nice areas in the surrounding suburbs or cities.
Detroit has had it's share of challenges and problems, and has
been particularly hard hit with the downturn of the economy
and auto industry. Like many places, people are hurting.
But, it has not yet degenerated into the apocalyptic wasteland
that some people might like to think. :nono:
Sorry to disappoint! :original:

A white guy pointing out ruins in Detroit?
Looks like a video made by the local Republican Party.

Thank you FIIISH. Here is an article dated Feb 20, 2010 from Detroit Free Press titled "Survey finds third of Detroit lots vacant":
http://www.freep.com/article/20100220/BUSINESS04/2200371/
A little more than 35% of the city's 343,849 residential parcels are either vacant lots or abandoned shells of buildings
And here is a map of Detroit showing where the empty houses are (dark blue is the highest vacancy rates):
http://www.freep.com/article/20100220/BUSINESS04/100220001/Maps-See-results-of-the-survey
You can use Google Street View to see what it looks like in the dark blue areas of the map above, assuming the pictures are not too old of course. I spotted the big area east of City of Hamtramck:
http://maps.google.com/maps?layer=c&cbll=42.409246,-83.016967&cbp=11,229.74,,1,-2.5&ved=0CBoQ2wU&ei=3cOCS9nIH4m0MLjylZsI&ie=UTF8&t=h&panoid=v7kGxhNIHL9WkdGGs2Tsvg&ll=42.398108,-83.044281&spn=0.04944,0.195179&z=13
http://maps.google.com/maps?layer=c&cbll=42.410622,-83.017926&cbp=11,247.45,,0,3.4&ved=0CBoQ2wU&ei=3cOCS9nIH4m0MLjylZsI&ie=UTF8&t=h&panoid=6lnjZptcw8Ow83S_ZYk_Sg&ll=42.410593,-83.017931&spn=0.024715,0.130291&z=14
and I also spotted the second area highlighted in the map (Conner neighborhood, 54% vacant houses, 48% houses in good or fair condition):
http://maps.google.com/maps?layer=c&cbll=42.419135,-82.994132&cbp=11,217.3,,0,5&ved=0CBoQ2wU&ei=3cOCS9nIH4m0MLjylZsI&ie=UTF8&ll=42.419148,-82.994156&spn=0.024711,0.097589&t=h&z=14&panoid=b4izEdKJX9ikhyp1rpSgTg
If you want to read from the people who were or are occupying these houses, a few of them commented the 2 articles:

I live in the 48205 area. Yes, the article is correct. You can't really tell if you are driving in Baghdad or in Detroit. Forgive me, I might be insulting Baghdad.
I left Detroit after graduating from high school to live in Chicago, but returned 7 years later only because my father became ill. My father is a simple person and doesn't need much luxury. He doesn't mind the two abandon houses on each side of his house, the basketball court in front of his curb, the underage minors roaming middle of the night, or stray dogs. The only thing irritates him is the summer block party the young people are having every nights. The loud music blasting into the morning causes him not to have a goodnight sleep. As for the police, I am not even sure who is the real sheriff in town anymore.
All this data comes from Detroit Residetial Parcel Survey:

Yeah that narrator is real a duality douchebag more concerned with his politics than with Detroit. Not sure where he got the idea that Detroit was ever an "Exemplary City". Must be referencing the 60's or 50's which would be before the narrator was born.
Couldn't actually finish watching the vid, tried, got most of the way through.
Detroit has had beautiful ruins since the late 70's. This is not a new situation. Spending time there in the 80's is how I became fascinated with exploring urban decay. There used to be a bus tour of the ruins. For now enjoy these photos (http://www.detroityes.com/home.htm).
As for jobs & whatnot, yes it is "cutting edge". Detroit was the first post-industrial city in North America. That happened some time ago, not this past decade. These days even Gary, Indiana has lost it's manufacturing odor, which was extreme at one time.

metaw3 - Not from Detroit. I couldn't watch past the commercial material on the video either. The one building is so beautiful. I saw it on an Eminem video last summer "Beautiful" - which is also a nice song BTW.
Well, the jobs are in China and India and Bolivia and Brazil (etc), aren't they. Too bad all of those patents have been repressed - it could be Made in USA. Several months ago, I bought a used vacuum cleaner from the good old days when products lasted - Made in USA - a work horse of an appliance.
