Hi everybody,

It doesn't look good. Santiago is without power and the first images are seeping through via CNN. It's still night time there and the poor quality images show roads with debris scattered about.

The experts still don't know where the epicenter of the earthquake is.

I'll give more info when I have it...

Best regards,

Steve

Hi everybody,

The epicenter is around the Concepción area. There is a tidal wave heading north with warnings given to Peru and Equador.

Bridges have collapsed including the principal bridge that links the north and south of Chile.

More news as I get it....

Best regards,

Steve

They got hit off the coast of Japan too 7.0 off the coast is nothing to sneeze at, and there was a 6.0 and a 5.4 quake in Mindanao, Phillipines. As a matter of fact that entire area of the Ring of Fire was extremely active today producing several 5.0-4.0 size quakes

The quake hit 200 miles (325 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Santiago, and at a depth of 22 miles (35 kilometers) at 3:34 a.m. (0634 GMT; 1:34 a.m. EST), the U.S. Geological Survey reported. Its epicenter was just 70 miles (115 kilometers) from Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, where more than 200,000 people live along the Bio Bio river, and 60 miles from the ski town of Chillan, a gateway to Andean ski resorts that was destroyed in a 1939 earthquake.

An Associated Press Television News cameraman said some buildings collapsed in Santiago and power was out in parts of the city. With phone lines down, confirmation of damage was difficult elsewhere, especially further south toward the epicenter. The quake was felt in Argentina as well.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for Chile and Peru, and a less-urgent tsunami watch for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica.

"Sea level readings indicate a tsunami was generated. It may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter and could also be a threat to more distant coasts," the center said.

The U.S. west coast tsunami warning center said it did not expect a tsunami along the west of the U.S. or Canada but was continuing to monitor the situation.

Hi Everybody,

There is a tsunami warning also to Hawaaii. It could reach in around two or three hours.

The earthquake lasted for almost a minute, which is a long time and was so powerful they felt it in Buenos Aires in Argentina.

Six people confirmed dead in Santiago, over three hundred kilometers from the epicenter. It's still early days.

Steve

correct, once it hits the shallow water shelf the volume can grow exponentially..

interesting on the timing at 3:34 for the recording.. could it actually have been initiated at 3:33 and recorded at 3:34?

LAT – LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
LON – LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)
TIME – TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL – TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS …NOT… CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER – PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED
WHICH COULD CAUSE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE
APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS THREAT. THIS CENTER WILL
CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND
SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND CAN VARY
SIGNIFICANTLY ALONG A COAST DUE TO LOCAL EFFECTS. THE TIME FROM
ONE TSUNAMI WAVE TO THE NEXT CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO AN HOUR, AND
THE THREAT CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AS MULTIPLE WAVES ARRIVE.

FOR ALL AREAS – WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

Steve in Brazil;

Any kind of pictures you can get from Concepción I would appreciate. I will post anything I can find thats new, as well.

I lived there during the 1960 9.2 quake! It was a mess!

This one is now rated an 8.8.

The Richter scale is not linear in nature. a 7 is 10 times stronger than a 6, and so on.

So this quake was about 15 times stronger than the one that hit Haiti.

A CNN report from last nite:

Civil defense called my husband about the tsunami heading to the islands around 6 am our time. He's on call and now out helping the patients get ready. He said you know it is serious when civil defense calls. Our Karen from here notified us at 1 am when she called to warn us about the tusanmi and Reinhard wanted me to thank her. The power company which are built on the coast line and docks are at risk with something like this and they are closing some of the low lying roads.

Check out this activity. http://www.iris.edu/seismon/

The phone has been ringing all night. They have to evacuate patients who are in the low lying areas and make sure those who need oxygen are taken care of.

Thank goodness we have our solar generator if the power goes out. We are wondering how this may affect the power company. People don't realize that Hawaii is also dependent upon gas for electric and if the docks are damaged then there can be a problem getting food and fuel in. 97 percent of Hawaii's food is from the mainland.

Needless to say I've been pushing for folks to be prepared and feel comfortable that we will be alright. I truly feel for the folks in Chile and hope they get help.

Chile is a bit better prepared for this kind of thing, if there is such a thing.
(no, I doubt this was HAARP, no profit in it, really)

Trouble is, all this "earthquake-proof" engineering basically stops at 8.0. Anything after 8.0 isn't an earthquake, anymore, but a "Great Quake".

An 8.8 shaker is basically 8 times stronger than what modern buildings are designed to withstand.

Think of it this way. An animal's instinct during a quake, is to run. And you have to do something very drastic to get an animal to over-ride their panic reflex in a life-threatening situation, right? Well...

During the 9.2 in May, 1960 farmers reported that at it's peak, their animals stopped trying to run away. They simply laid down, and waited for it to end. It's that strong. Also, for anyone who has been in even a small one, you know that you also get a severe case of vertigo, as the one thing your body absolutely relies upon holding still, is tossing you about.

Ok, I just watche4d a bit on UniVision (http://univision.com), and so far, Concepcion has about 152 dead. but it's early. 2-3 foot cracks in the roads, bridges and buildings down, all over. So far 3 hospitals there have collapsed.

I only got a quick glance at it, but it looks like the old bridge across the Rio Bio is also down. s h i t.

More in a bit,

ok, re. strength

The Richter scale is exponential, not linear. Each "number" is 10 times stronger than the last.

The guy on CNN keeps saying "32 times" but if I recall right... he has his facts wrong.

there are 2 different factors in calculating the size of an earthquake, shift and shake.

The shake was much more extreme in Haiti but a very shallow shift.

The shift was huge in Chile one reason why the Tsunami was created but the shake was low, one reason it didn't do more damage to buildings

Jack
02-27-2010, 05:56 PM
It is actually 1000 times stronger .

Yeah im getting that too after having a look around... 900 times more powerful to be precise.. wow

How thunderous is 8.8 quake on the Richter scale? The energy released is between 500 and 900 times that of the magnitude 7.0 quake that hit Haiti on Jan. 12, he said. On the complex scale that measures earthquakes, an 8.0 quake releases 30 times the energy of a 7.0, and a 9.0 would release 30 times that, meaning 900 times more energy. An 8.8 would be somewhat less, Dixon said.

The Wikipedia page for the earthquake is pretty exhaustive already:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Chile_earthquake

Also:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale#Richter_magnitudes

Because of the logarithmic basis of the scale, each whole number increase in magnitude represents a tenfold increase in measured amplitude; in terms of energy, each whole number increase corresponds to an increase of about 31.6 times the amount of energy released.

Thanks, Meta...

so it was a mix up in terms.. actually both 10 and 32 are correct.

Wife just came in Kaput-er room and said the tsunami hitting Hawaii is "imminent".

Find a high spot, Carol!

Sirens Sound on Hawaiian Coasts (February 28, 2010)
Comment Send Us Your Observations

Both earthquakes took place along a fault line where the Nazca tectonic plate, the section of the earth’s crust that lies under much of the Eastern Pacific Ocean south of the equator, is sliding beneath another section, the South American plate. The two are converging at a rate of about 3 and a half inches per year.

Earthquake experts said the strains built up by that movement, plus the stresses added along the fault line by the 1960 quake and smaller ones in the intervening years, led to the rupture on Saturday along what is estimated to be about 400 miles of the fault. The quake generated a tsunami, with wave heights of about 5 feet recorded along the Chilean coast and larger waves forecast for Hawaii and elsewhere in the Pacific.

The quake was centered about 140 miles north of the center of the 1960 earthquake, which ruptured more than 650 miles of the fault and was measured at magnitude 9.5. The fault is a thrust fault, in which most of the ground motion during a quake is vertical.

Experts said the earthquake appeared to have no connection to a magnitude 6.9 quake that struck off the southern coast of Japan on Saturday. The Chilean event also had no connection to the magnitude 7.0 quake that occurred in Haiti on Jan. 12.

That quake, which is believed to have killed more than 200,000 people, occurred along a strike-slip fault, in which most of the ground motion is lateral.

Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the United States Geological Survey in Golden, Colo., said the quake on Saturday generated about 500 times more energy than the Haitian quake, which was measured at magnitude 7.0. “But even though this quake is larger, it’s probably not going to reap the devastation that the Haitian quake did,” at least on land, Mr. Caruso said.

For one thing, he noted, the quality of building construction is better in Chile than in Haiti. And the fact that the quake occurred offshore should also help limit the destruction. In Haiti, the rupture occurred only a few miles from the capital, Port-au-Prince. The rupture on Saturday was centered about 200 miles southwest of the Chilean capital, Santiago, and 60 miles from the nearest town, Chillan.

In some respects, the Chilean quake is similar to the Indonesian earthquake of Dec. 26, 2004. That quake, which also occurred along a thrust fault, generated a tsunami that killed more than 200,000 people around the Indian Ocean.

When they occur underwater, thrust-fault earthquakes are far more likely to create tsunamis than tremors on strike-slip faults, said David Schwartz, an earthquake geologist with the geological survey in Menlo Park, Calif. “When they slip, the fault that causes the earthquake breaks the surface, and pushes the water up,” he said. “It pushes an awful lot of water. And that water has to go somewhere.”

That is what occurred in 1960. A tsunami generated by that quake devastated Hilo, Hawaii, with waves as high as 35 feet, killing 61 people. The tsunami reached as far as Japan, reaching northern parts of the main island, Honshu, about a day after the quake and killing 185 people and destroying more than 1600 homes.

very interesting its like the entire region is on fire not just one place.

Hence the term "Ring Of Fire" ;)

They just said before everything is said in done there predicting a 7.8 aftershock

. If this earthquake activity follows the same patterns as the last one

in Haiti the next few days should see a spike in sensitives being more psychic.

I felt it last night when my cat started freaking out at 3:33am ..woke up the whole house and I've been up since then.. just wired with energy.. and I live about as far away from the quake as one can get.. then to find out the quake was recorded at 3:34am my time.... that's just a little freaky:shocked:

If the sky was changing colors then that sounds like Haarp. Ironically when I was in Costa Rica last week they dedicated a full page of the newspaper to Haarp technology and its capabilities. I was shocked to see that article to say the least!

Good find mgray and peaceandlove.

I found this Chile TV progam about HAARP posted January 21st but I don't understand a word. It looks like mainsteam TV so I guess many people over there are aware of wheather warefare and that the sky changing colors before an earthquake could be caused by HAARP. Note that it happened in the middle of the night so chances are there won't be any footage of the sky this time. There is also the possibility that these electromagnetic effects in the sky happen during natural quakes as well (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BwIadY5FI8).

Water is receeding out of Hilo Bay around 11:30 am our time. Cloud of brown water on other side in Kona.

I'm so impressed with the civil defense system here. Police were even at gas stations while lines were wrapped around the corners with folks waiting to fill. Grochery store parking lots were full. I went and filled up after the rush, then to the store, the the bank to withdraw cash which they were recommending on the radio.

Both planes and coast guard helicopters are flying around the coast lines monitoring the situation. The radio station was taking calls from folks situated around the island at different ocean view locations giving reports. Ironically the whales were still breaching off of Lapaeupaeu point. I also saw police cars situated at entrances to where the road went down toward the ocean. The public is being notified that the sirens will go off also at the all clear point. Radios were playing loudly at the gas stations so folks could monitor what was going on. Dumps were closed and all extra folks whose names were on the lists were notified around 6 am and put on alert as to what they were expected to do. It's like a well oiled machine out there.

The public was asked not to use water due to low lying sewage stations in case there is a backwash. Meanwhile, the town looks deserted as everyone is off to high points to observe the event. One lone surfer was out in the water and they got that dude out. Many of the hotels are built right next to the water and could sustain damage. There is evacuation for some of those areas as well.

My husband is in the thick of it with home bound patients and calling home to give reports. Meanwhile all is calm at the home front and I'm going out now to water the garden. :original:

Quake-triggered tsunami begins affecting Hawaii

HILO, Hawaii – A tsunami triggered by an earthquake in Chile has swept ashore in Hawaii. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear. But the initial waves did not appear to be serious, looking more like an extreme fluctuation in the tide than a giant tsunami.

The wave began affecting Hilo Bay on the Big Island just before noon local time. Water began pulling away from shore, exposing reefs and sending dark streaks of muddy, sandy water offshore. Water later washed over Coconut Island, a small park off the coast of Hilo.

The tsunami raced across the Pacific Ocean in terrifying force after the magnitude-8.8 quake hit Chile. Hawaii officials had ample time to get people out of the potential disaster area, and thousands were evacuated.

I have not payed much attention to people talking about weird synchronicities involving numbers like 11:11. Until now.
I used to think it was related to selective attention and also the fact that lower digits tend to be more frequent due to the simple fact that we humans prefer to work with smaller numbers and so we adjust the scales of the numbers we usually work with.

But this 11:11 on the video has got my attention. Thanks for pointing that.

Can you blame her????

Love your humor Swanny and humor sees us through the most difficult events.

I would like to point out mother earth was well p********off before we even got here.
All these things climate change, earth quakes, storms are part of a natural cycle though I don't think we actually contributing to the "health" of our planet. We are takers rather than givers. However a volcano erupting makes us look like amateurs in polluting the atmosphere.

All that said my heart goes out to those affected by any such event such as we are presently witnessing.

In May of 1960 Chile had a 9.5 quake that took out downtown Hilo in Hawaii which is why everyone at this end was so well prepared for this event and why there was so little loss of life in Chile itself. These things happened before weather wars and HAARP. If anyone recently looked at the global earthquake map they would see that the whole ring of fire is filled with quakes for weeks now. And that perhaps, just perhaps, Planet X might have something to do with this ~ or not.

I look at what is going on as cyclical. Ice ages are cyclical. Global warming is cyclical. The sun being quiet and also active is cyclical. Only now, we are more aware of what is going on globally due to our current communications network.

I was in the San Francisco quake of 89 and the Hawaii quake of 06. Both were devastating, yet there was little loss of life. Having kept close watch on the ring of fire for the last 8 years I see a pattern of increased activity and I don't expect it to stop until the earth has transitioned the current cycle it is undergoing. If anything, it will intensify. The one thing that keeps me calm throughout all of this is being as self-sufficient as possible with our own independent water source, electricity and food supply. If people are prepared they can take these earth changes more in stride and recognize that these things happen. The best that we can do is be prepared and have a plan of action ready if relocation is necessary.
