Kansas City to Close Nearly Half Its Schools

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Board of Education voted Wednesday night to close almost half of the city’s public schools, accepting a sweeping and contentious plan to shrink the system in the face of dwindling enrollment, budget cuts and a $50 million deficit.
In a 5-to-4 vote, the members endorsed the Right-Size plan, proposed by the schools superintendent, John Covington, to close 28 of the city’s 61 schools and cut 700 of 3,000 jobs, including those of 285 teachers. The closings are expected to save $50 million, erasing the deficit from the $300 million budget.

I don't know about the KC school district, but i do know that the Blue Valley SD had a meeting this week to decide on reducing schools... however they are still going ahead with the construction of a new high school...
will see if i can get more information from the horses' mouth...

Thanks xbusymom,
A friend received a $2600 grant recently for agreeing to teach in poor schools for two years, but if the schools are closing I wonder if she will have to return her grant.
Her reasoning was she needed a new job and she needed $2100 by the end of this month to pay her property taxes. She put her house up for sale over a year ago and NO BITES.
Her current job is in Commercial Real Estate which is not paying anymore.

yep there is talk of quite a lot of KC (kansas city limits- not the suburbs other districts) schools being shut down- but at this point, no one knows which ones yet- (most likely a shuffeling and condensing which will require more bus routes)
or how that will affect the surrounding districts...
* special needs teachers / para(s) are always needed and demand for them looks like it is on the rise*
and if she has a desire or gift for it- she might consider transitioning to alternative schooling/tutoring for special needs *since the schools don’t really make a lasting impression with the kids* (ok, I will refrain from my soap-box speech, but I would love to hook-up with a credentialed teacher in/for that avenue-I have ideas, experience but no “paper”*** hehe)

Thats a good thing -- less indocrination, less conditioning, less suppressing kids from having any fun...
its a joyeous occassion anytime a school closes down... ask any of the kids ;)
