I confirmed with a friend of mine who is a CTO at one of WAMU's vendors. They have NOT been paid the 1 million + they are owed for servicing wamu accounts. This money was due monday after it was already late 2 months. They have ceased servicing wamu accounts as of tuesday. You are right, I confirmed it myself that WAMU is broke. I am not sure if they will close friday but they are done. There is no denying it now. This will crush the fdic fund. This is really starting to get scary!!!!!

Good question. I think I would go ahead and get my food covered and then buy Au. E-Foods direct is shipping in seven days and from what I understand it's pretty good stuff. Or you could go to your local box wholesale (Sams, Costco) and stock up on beanie weanies, spaghettios and canned tuna.

You know I've been watching these bank failures for a while. Back in the early 1900's JP Morgan started spreading rumors about the insolvency of the banks which caused a run and put the economy in turmoil. He then gobbled them up for pennies on the dollar. If I'm not mistaken this eventually let to Wilson allowing the central bankers to come in and establish the Federal Reserve. Do any of you think this might be going on here?

Zorgon the magnificent (very cool avatar!),

We won't stop using mediums of exchange, and metals should serve as trusted mediums when paper burns, happened every time across available recorded His-Story. The paper is mostly on-fire, and as a fire-fighter, it generally reaches point of 'flash-over' and all that we do then is sit back and demo it when it exhausts the fuel supply ...

There is a thread offshoot now started that address this question and the what / where / how of metals at:

Ok, So, here's a silly question... does this mean I don't have to pay my WaMu charge card balance? and to think, I just made a payment... I could've stocked up on some food instead!

At the Bipartisan meeting today, they are saying the plan's will be locked down on Tuesday... President Bush is sending them what needs to be worked out over the weekend.

When the truth was dropped on the room, it was as if the oxygen was sucked out...

no one could breath or speak for over 10 seconds...

a Trillion Dollar Bail out plan...

3 Million homes in foreclosure stages right now, and the adjustable rates are about to change tanking twice as many more...

The Government is about to take on all those foreclosures to take them off of the banks books so they have credit to lend again...

At any large, diversified flea market.

We need large diviersified flea markets, or village markets everywhere.

Just my 2 cents.

not a silly question. I askd myself that same question. I guess people with WaMu charge cards should continue to pay their bill.

Sobering moment (http://money.cnn.com/2008/09/19/news/economy/what_lawmakers_heard/index.htm)

Somber. Sobering. Warnings of an economic "meltdown."

That's how participants described an emergency meeting held Thursday night between leaders of Congress and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.

The meeting was followed by an announcement from Paulson that he was preparing a far-reaching program - on a scale seen rarely in American history - to intervene in the shaky financial markets.

Paulson gave few details, although the plan's broad outline is for the federal government to buy hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of mortgage assets held by banks, Wall Street firms and other financial institutions. Details of the rescue plan were sent to members of Congress late Friday, according to reports.

Most likely the little people will be facing higher unemployment rates, the dollar will (should) drop in value, loans will become much harder to qualify for, alot of assets (stuff) will be sold/auctioned to foriegn investers.

It sounds like some of these bad deals are so conviluted, they realy are not sure what the actual value is. It's almost like a total crap shoot for the american taxpayers.

Thanks a lot Rocky for pointing that all out
I am considering to buy some more coins before things are gettng even worse.
I am just hoping they do not find criminal ways to surpress the spot price even more. Do you have any intuition on that?
I am subsribed to Mahendra's newsletter (financial astrology), he warned a few days ago that gold prices might drop as much as 50%. Hard to believe though but scary

Outstanding news!

I just paid off my WAMU credit card. So sorry it didn't help them

Perhaps I could loan them a couple of bucks at a ridiculous interest rate?
