Hello everyone, I am interested in forming an emergency community or group with like minded individuals. This is a good place to exchange ideas and even setup a meeting location in the event things do get bad.

Please remember that this is a public forum and personal information should only be used in outside channels i.e. email, phone, PM.

1. Wait and see how many we are.

2. Discuss here what are the priorities (safe location, food, water, energy, etc) Also, once we have a location to go, we will should report it to the Avalon Communities Map ( http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/showthread.php?t=549 )

3. Share information on priorities so each can start preparations.

Welcome Fuglybugger & Adarajones! :welcomeani: I am so glad to meet like minded people in our area.

Disasters can come in several forms; however, our basic human needs are the same always. With unstable weather conditions, unstable economy, society, and most everything else, it only makes sense to me to have a well-organized disaster ‘kit’ of appropriate size for your own family plus a couple more individuals and your pets. This kit should last you in my opinion for at least 2 weeks until you can stabilize your living situation.

1. My first goal I think for everyone should establish their own emergency kit. After the emergency kit we will need a meeting place in the event of an emergency. This is only a draft so please add comments or ideas.

This 100 item essential list looks a little daunting to me so choose what you think may be appropriate and economically feasible.

First thing is first. Water Filter -- a Doulton or Berkey, etc. Might want to consider a portable as well as a home filter. I have a generator that I'm converting to GEET... a Bedini SSG battery charger, plenty of candles and some canned foods to wait out a storm. If things get too tough at home, my focus is on higher ground away from population centers. I have a few ideas around the SNP, possibly through the Appalachian trail system. I keep a map of the area in my "go bag."

Any thoughts?

Argh ... where were you when I was trying to establish a New Paradigm Meetup group in Colonial Beach!? (That's a rhetorical question ...)

Ah well - it's good to see so many replies from the area. Y'all have restored my faith in the Commonwealth!

Unfortunately, I'm packing my things for a move back to Tennessee. So I guess you'll just have to count me amongst the former area residents wishing you all the best!

Fuglybugger, did I miss the most important thing? Water? :original: I have often thought about this I think a portable water filter is an excellent idea. I may try to get one of these filters you mentioned, it would make life a lot easier. If someone is unable to buy one of these filters then you can make one out of containers and charcoal from your fire. Takes more effort for clean water but handy if you don't have a Doulton or Berkey water filter.

1. Rain water or other water supply.
2. Carbon: Burned wood "charcoal" from a fire.
3. If you don't have chlorine then you can boil the water after the filter.

Thanks David.

It's a good thread you've got going here, with practical information & recommendations!

Water, food & shelter ... in that order. Here's another, offered semi-lightheartedly ...
I heard it said once that, while there is so much emphasis on gold & silver as universal currency - the really valuable commodity, should all hell break loose - will surely be: toilet paper!

The wife & I are headed to my childhood home just outside of Nashville. We both have a fair amount of family & friends there. I expect we'll be spending some time in Chattanooga once our daughter & grandkids move there sometime next year!

Welcome RubyTuesday. :)

R.Z., I hope your move goes smoothly and good luck! I know what you mean about currency. Not sure really what to do about that. On one hand, I would like to purchase gold but that does get rather expensive. I may get a couple ounces just in case. I don't smoke but a carton of cigarettes could also be a good bargaining chip.

Am clearing out the last of the stuff here at the Colonial Beach house, one load already deposited in the new home, in the old stomping grounds, in Tennessee.

I dunno if there are any Ford truck fans among you, but just in case - I've got a pair of good NP435 (granny-low 4spd) transmissions here, a couple of half-worn NP208 transfer cases (one w/ new chain & seals) & a D44 ttb 'chunk' that are all free to a good home if you speak up real soon! (One old, rusted F150 won't be making the trip with me - it's headed for recycle heaven very soon.)

Sorry I couldn't have gotten together with y'all earlier - but apparently, this is how it was meant to be! Y'all take care!

I live in Va Beach & do want to start some meetups or just private networking for many of you like-minded & prepared brothers & sisters. Let me know via PM & we can all try to contribute on different avenues for survival thru positive energy & understanding. We, like Bill & Kerry ended on the blogtalkradio program earlier, are more powerful than we even know, YET, & that is why these chilling scenarios are trying to come into fruition by other malevolent ET's which control the highest human elites. I am here in the Central Virgina area.

The idea for meet ups, for me personally, is very premature. I am willing to cautiously connect with others via this forum in order to ascertain the professional and collateral skill sets of those who are local to me.

I am a robotics engineer for a major corporation. I have past experience also in nuclear engineering. I have collateral skill sets for:

1) aquaculture
2) hydroponics and greenhouses
3) solar power systems
4) geodesic dome structure
5) plumbing and electrical systems

I also have other hard assets.

My concern is networking with others who are serious, quality people. It is very important to me that they be mentally stable individuals who are not full of self delusions who also bring something worthwhile and practical to the table.

Who has acreage with lumber and clean flowing water or spring water on it?

Who has earth moving equipment?

Who has an operating or potentially operating farm that is far from any major population center?

Who has survival training and gear?

Who has security experience and personal defense and fire arms knowledge?

Who has construction and carpentry skill sets?

Who has water quality knowledge and experience?

Who has experience raising domestic livestock?

Who understands soil quality issues and crop timing and rotation?

Who has surveyor skills?

Who has skills and equipment for diagnosing and repairing automotive systems?

Who has skills for large group meal preparation and management of food storages?

Who has medical knowledge and practical skill sets?

Regards,
Merkhava

Hi All,

This construction will work, but it is pretty high tech on the bucket end (plastic, made from petroleum). This type of thing will also work with unglazed clay pots stacked 3 high, holes in the bottoms plugged. There is plenty of clay around almost everything. If you can't get buckets, you can make clay pots of your own and pit-fire them to sufficient hardness to use. Just keep in mind that plastic will crack or develop holes if you're not careful, then what do you do? It can be mended with high heat and more plastic to use as a filler, but clay is almost everywhere.

David and others,

I am willing to offer my place as a way-stop if people feel they need to get to the mountains. I am west of Roanoke but not in the highlands. Further info would have to be exchanged by private email, not through this forum.

Any are welcome if they are headed elsewhere. I have only a very small patch of land (1/4 acre) out in the country, and a very tiny house (think hobbit house). Any passing through would have to think in terms of camping on the land (there is a fire pit), and it would be good if you had your own food and drinking water, although I wlll share what I have as best I can. I have only small stores of food and water.

Access to the Appalachian Trail is located near here, but a little further East, from Catawba Mountain.

So... consider this an offer of a stayover at a wayside inn, if you come quietly and respectfully here and can accept the conditions as they exist.

I am searching for my own Radiant Zone, and there may be some potentials around this area, but I do not have enough land to consider it.

namaste!

Hi, I'm with a group calling itself Open Circle. Right now we spend most of our time in Culpeper, but we also have rural land in the Blue Ridge mountains, with deer and clean drinking water. If you're looking for people who are perfectly prepared materially for apocalyptic scenarios, that's not us, look elsewhere. But we do have some sustainable systems in operation on our land, we have plans for increasing our sustainability, and we're growing a large portion of our own food. Our top priority is nurturing trust and good interpersonal relations within our group, and with our neighbors and friends. If you believe as we do, that the qualities of being adaptable and working effectively as a team are key to survival during disasters, and are also desirable when there's no disaster, then I invite you to check out our entry in the online Communities Directory and contact us through the email link there:

http://directory.ic.org/21987/Open_Circle

(Our people are not believers in Project Camelot's far-out stuff, so please don't presume we buy into it. We think disasters are possible, but we are not certain any disaster is necessarily coming.)
