I am mudra here in Avalon.

I great all in peace.

I created a new social group "The Sanctuary" as a place to remind us that Spirit is where it all starts from .

I see it as the heart of Avalon where the Love goes out , where the Love goes in , where all barriers dissolve. The center stone in the medicine wheel.

Some place to start and some place to end, some place to meet in Spirit, some place to meditate , some place to find peace and inspiration.

Please take the time to enter " The Sancturary " and leave there some inspiring quotes, stories or images from here and beyond, that you feel , in your own way convey wisdom.

In that way we can create a high energy center from where the sky is not the limit, because from Spirit we know, that everything is possible and our dearest dreams may come through .

"[T]he spirit and the soul of Adam, when they were attached to the human world, passed from the world of freedom into the world of bondage...attachment of the soul and spirit to the human world, which is sin, was inherited by the descendants of Adam, and is the serpent which is always in the midst of, and at enmity with, the spirits and the descendants of Adam...It is because of this attachment that men have been deprived of essential spirituality and exalted position."

FOR A MOMENT

For a moment every eye sees a petal begin its journey from stem to ground. And in that thimble full of time where all worry becomes extinct - all futurizing over what might be or what could happen ceases, then the world, in relaxation, unites in the joy of the now. Yes, imagine for a moment there is no worry.

For a moment every inhale welcomes wellness and the world feels relief from the accompanying pains of disease. The air hums with the sighs of billions expressing their collective relief. Yes, imagine for a moment there is no pain.

For a moment everybody wins and the victory circle is electric with the hugs, handshakes and prayerful bows of authentic acknowledgment. It is the delicious moment when every mind, with every heart conceives the truth that there is more than enough for all. Yes, imagine for a moment that everybody wins.

For a moment all are able to forgive every thing and every one from every page of the past, every thought of separation, every grievance and grudge. Brother understands brother -sister their sister; child understands parent and parent their child and the world is awash with liberation. Yes, imagine for a moment that all forgive.

For a moment there is no hunger and the bellies of all children and adults are filled with the precise nourishment their body is craving. Food is equally portioned and equally shared and all races and religions discover that by sharing, one need never suffer from hunger again.Yes, imagine for a moment there is an end to hunger.

For a moment every person, everywhere is active in their passion – doing what they love. Selfdoubt has evaporated and each heart beats with the rhythm of confidence. Creativity is a sacred act for the soul without concern for recompense or approval. Time and deadline is replaced with being lost in the joy of doing what one loves. Yes, imagine for a moment that everyone is living their passion.

For a moment every conscious thought tilts towards reverent action for the earth. The planet is nurtured and treated with sacred intention. Every ounce of air and water is pure. Pollution is a distant memory and each inhabitant contributes to unprecedented ecological stability.Yes, imagine for a moment the earth is healed.

For a moment every heart has someone to love and someone who loves them back. For every soul there is a connection and for every connection there is an appreciative soul. Loyalty, devotion and respect are as natural and effortless to embody as breathing. Yes, imagine for a moment that true love exists for all.

And with each imagined moment linked to the other, we stretch those moments to an occasion, those occasions to hours - those hours moving into days. And in those collections of days where the imagination is free to think as big and as grand as it can, we begin to see and feel the shifts - our planet, our hearts, our passions, our lives – all expanding and guiding us into a new era of living.

Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a polluted mind, suffering will follow you, as the wheels of the oxcart follow the footsteps of the ox. Thanks again for your creative and thoughtfull geniusness, and for the invite to your personal celestial sanctum. I have been ill, and hospitalised for a while, it was a mission that I had to undertake. I believe I have now completed the last vistages of my kharmic debt to physicality, and I feel lighter, more evolved, and enlightened; but enough about me.
Things are now happening very fast. I have reasons to believe that very soon, many of us here will be re-uniting with our off-earth family, and possibly visiting previous homelands for what may be a short stay "about 3 thousand years or so". I thought it might just be appropriate and timely, to suggest the following link,

Hi all: I want to alert you to the Andrea Bocceli/Sarah Brightman vid.....I just clicked on it , it started to play, & then the music disappeared & in its place was an extremely loud sound, defeaning. It sounded a lot like a fire siren.....my computer froze & I couldn't shut it down......the sound kept going for about the length of the vid & then stopped, just as I was about to phone a computer store for help. I think that vid is corrupt or something else is going on. Wow, it scared me.

I'm not about to play it again, just in case.
Has anyone else played it?

How "spiritual" you are has nothing to do with what you believe but everything to do with your state of consciousness.

Do not be concerned with the fruit of your action - just give attention to the action itself. The fruit will come of its own accord. This is a powerful spiritual practice.

Transmission of Mind

Huang-po

When a sudden flash of thought occurs in your mind, and you recognize it for a dream or an illusion, then you can enter into the state reached by the Buddhas of the past-not that the Buddhas of the past really exist, or that the Buddhas of the future have not yet come into existence. Above all, have no longing to become a future Buddha; your sole concern should be, as thought succeeds thought, to avoid clinging to any of them.

If a Buddha arises, do not think of him as “enlightened” or “deluded,” “good” or “evil.” Hasten to rid yourself of any desire to cling to him. Cut him off in the twinkling of an eye! On no account seek to hold him fast, for a thousand locks could not stay him, nor a hundred thousand feet of rope bind him. This being so, valiantly strive to banish and annihilate him.

I will now make luminously clear how to set about being rid of that Buddha. Consider the sunlight. You may say it is near, yet if you follow it from world to world you will never catch it in your hands. Then you may describe it as far away, and you will see it just before your eyes. Follow it, and behold, it escapes you; run from it, and it follows you close. You can neither possess it, nor have done with it. From this example you can understand how it is with the true Nature of all things, and henceforth, there will be no need to grieve or to worry about such things.

Thus all the visible universe is the Buddha; so are all sounds; hold fast to one principle, and all the others are identical. On seeing one thing, you see all. On perceiving any individual’s mind, you are perceiving all Mind. Obtain a glimpse of one way, and all ways are embraced in your vision, for there is nowhere at all that is devoid of the Way. When your glance falls upon a grain of dust, what you see is identical with all the vast world-systems with their great rivers and mighty hills. To gaze upon a drop of water is to behold the nature of all the waters of the universe. Moreover, in thus contemplating the totality of phenomena, you are contemplating the totality of Mind. All these phenomena are intrinsically void, and yet this Mind with which they are identical is no mere nothingness. By this I mean that it does exist, but in a way too marvelous for us to comprehend. It is an existence which is no existence, a non-existence which is nevertheless existence.

Native American Prayer

Oh, Great Spirit
Whose voice I hear in the winds,
And whose breath gives life to all the world,
hear me, I am small and weak,
I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold
the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have
made and my ears sharp to hear your voice.
Make me wise so that I may understand the things
you have taught my people.
Let me learn the lessons you have
hidden in every leaf and rock.

I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother,
but to fight my greatest enemy - myself.
Make me always ready to come to you
with clean hands and straight eyes.
So when life fades, as the fading sunset,
my Spirit may come to you without shame.

Lakota Instructions for Living

Friend do it this way - that is,
whatever you do in life,
do the very best you can
with both your heart and mind.

And if you do it that way,
the Power Of The Universe
will come to your assistance,
if your heart and mind are in Unity.

When one sits in the Hoop Of The People,
one must be responsible because
All of Creation is related.
And the hurt of one is the hurt of all.
And the honor of one is the honor of all.
And whatever we do effects everything in the universe.

If you do it that way - that is,
if you truly join your heart and mind
as One - whatever you ask for,
that's the Way It's Going To Be.

Question: How can Dzogchen help us in our daily jobs and careers?

Dalai Lama: ...it is quite difficult to have an experience of Dzogchen, but once you do have that experience, it can be extremely beneficial in dealing with your day to day life, your job, and your career. This is because that kind of experience will give you the ability to prevent yourself from being overwhelmed by circumstances, good or bad. You will not fall into extreme states of mind: you will not get over-excited or depressed. Your attitude toward circumstances and events will be as if you were someone observing the mind, without being drawn away by circumstances.

For example, when you see a reflection of a form in a mirror, the reflection appears within the mirror but it is not projected from within. In the same way, when you confront the situations of life, or deal with others, your attitude too will be mirror-like.

Also, when a reflection appears in the mirror, the mirror does not have to go after the object that is reflected: it simply reflects, spontaneously, on the surface. The same with you: since there is no attachment or agitation at having these 'reflections' in your mind, you will feel tremendous ease and relief. You are not preoccupied by what arises in the mind, nor does it cause you any distress. You are free from conceptuality or any form of objectifying. And so it really does help you, in allowing you to be free from being caught up in the play of emotions like hatred, attachment, and the like. "

--from Dzogchen: The Heart Essence of the Great Perfection by His Holiness the Dalai Lama,
translated by Thupten Jinpa and Richard Barron

COMPASSION

The definition is: wanting others to be free from suffering.
This compassion happens when one feels sorry with someone, and one feels an urge to help.
The near enemy is pity, which keeps other at a distance, and does not urge one to help.
The opposite is wanting others to suffer, or cruelty.
A result which one needs to avoid is sentimentality.
Compassion thus refers to an unselfish, de-tached emotion which gives one a sense of urgency in wanting to help others. From a Buddhist perspective, helping others to reduce their physical or mental suffering is very good, but the ultimate goal is to extinguish all suffering by stopping the process of rebirth and the suffering that automatically comes with living (enlightenment).

The attitude of a so-called Bodhisattva is Bodhicitta: this is the ultimate compassionate motivation: the wish to liberate all sentient beings from the sufferings of cyclic existence and to become a fully enlightened Buddha oneself in order to act as the perfect guide for them.

SYMPATHETIC JOY

The definition is: being happy with someone's fortune/happiness. Sympathetic joy here refers to the potential of bliss and happiness of all sentient beings, as they can all become Buddhas.
The near enemy is hypocrisy or affectation.
The opposite is jealousy, when one cannot accept the happiness of others.
A result which one needs to avoid is: spaced-out bliss, which can easily turn into laziness.
Note: sympathetic joy is a great antidote to depression for oneself as well, but this should not be the main goal.
By rejoicing in others' progress on the spiritual path, one can actually share in their positive karma.
Sympathetic joy is an unselfish, very positive mental attitude which is beneficial for oneself and others. In this case, it also refers specifically to rejoicing in the high rebirth and enlightenment of others.

LOVE

The definition of love in Buddhism is: wanting others to be happy.
This love is unconditional and it requires a lot of courage and acceptance (including self-acceptance).
The "near enemy" of love, or a quality which appears similar, but is more an opposite is: conditional love (selfish love, see also the page on attachment).
The opposite is wanting others to be unhappy: anger, hatred.
A result which one needs to avoid is: attachment.

This definition means that 'love' in Buddhism refers to something quite different from the ordinary term of love which is usually about attachment, more or less successful relationships and sex; all of which are rarely without self-interest. Instead, in Buddhism it refers to de-tachment and the unselfish interest in others' welfare.

'Even offering three hundred bowls of food three times a day does not match the spiritual merit gained in one moment of love.'
Nagarjuna

"If there is love, there is hope that one may have real families, real brotherhood, real equanimity, real peace. If the love within your mind is lost and you see other beings as enemies, then no matter how much knowledge or education or material comfort you have, only suffering and confusion will ensue"
His Holiness the Dalai Lama from 'The little book of Buddhism'

EQUANIMITY

The definition is: not to distinguish between friend, enemy or stranger, but regard every sentient being as equal. It is a clear-minded tranquil state of mind - not being overpowered by delusions, mental dullness or agitation.
The near enemy is indifference. It is tempting to think that just 'not caring' is equanimity, but that is just a form of egotism.
The opposite is anxiety, worry, stress and paranoia caused by dividing people into 'good' and 'bad'; one can worry forever if a good friend may not be a bad person after all, and thus spoiling trust and friendship.
A result which one needs to avoid is apathy as a result of 'not caring'.
Equanimity is the basis for unconditional, altruistic love, compassion and joy for other's happiness and Bodhicitta.
When we discriminate between friends and enemies, how can we ever want to help all sentient beings?
Equanimity is an unselfish, de-tached state of mind which also prevents one from doing negative actions.

"If one tries to befriend an enemy for a moment, he becomes your friend.
The same thing occurs when one treats a friend as an enemy.
Therefore, by understanding the impermanence of temporal relations,
Wise ones are never attached to food, clothing or reputation, nor to friends or enemies.

The father becomes the son in another life,
Mother becomes the wife,
Enemy becomes friend;
It always changes.
Therefore there is nothing definite in samsara."
The Buddha

"The foundation for practicing the seven-point cause and effect method is cultivating a mind of equanimity. Without this foundation you will not be able to have an impartial altruistic view, because without equanimity you will always have partiality towards your relatives and friends. Realize that you should not have prejudice, hatred, or desire towards enemies, friends, or neutral persons, thus lay a very firm foundation of equanimity."
His Holiness the Dalai Lama, from 'Path to Bliss: A Practical Guide to Stages of Meditation'

It is said that the awareness of a Buddha is completely even, like the ocean, taking in equally the joys and sorrows of all people, friends, loved ones, relatives, and those never met. This is the meaning of a statement made by so many of the world's great spiritual teachers,
"Love your enemy."
It doesn't mean love the person you hate. You can't do that. Love those who hate you.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,
even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

No mind, no form, I only exist;
Now ceased all will and thought;
The final end of Nature's dance,
I am it whom I have sought.

A realm of Bliss bare, ultimate;
Beyond both knower and known;
A rest immense I enjoy at last;
I face the One alone.

I have crossed the secret ways of life,
I have become the Goal.
The Truth immutable is revealed;
I am the way, the God-Soul.

My spirit aware of all the heights,
I am mute in the core of the Sun.
I barter nothing with time and deeds;

We are all participating in a grand activity of unifying here. There is only ONE here really.
The deepest hidden secret of the Tibetans that now comes into the open is:
« To transcend hope and fear » .

Fear :
What we fear most is death. You can’t die for you are immortal. Even if I die , it’s just another level of my endless existence.

Hope :
If you are hoping that these things are just no going to happen in the future, if you are hoping for this.., if you are hoping for that...

Let’s just get back to the emptiness of the Now, to that place where hope does not need to happen.
In this moment if you truly accept the power of your presence in the Now, that’s everything you need right now , and you can win the game.
You can reunite with the Creator.
And you can finish your great cycle of Evolution in the cosmos and be fully enlighted .
You can stay there and breathe .
Your true essence is light and love and no one can take this away from you.

LOVE, HARMONY, AND BEAUTY
Hazrat Inayat Khan

It might be thought that the philosophers and mystics and sages, who are so near and close to God, might take too much liberty with the world. But they are, on the contrary, the most tender and sensitive towards mankind. They are ready to share anyone's trouble, to share anyone's sorrow, to share everyone's depression and despair. They are ready to console any and every person with their words, to help with their service, and to give their sympathy always to those who need it. They shrink at no sacrifice of time, money, pleasure, or comfort. As Christ teaches, 'Whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.'

What does all this teach us? It is all a lesson in sympathy for one's fellow man, to teach us to share in his troubles, in his despair. For whoever really experiences this joy of life, finds that it becomes so great that it fills his heart and his soul. It does not matter if he has fewer comforts or an inferior position than many in this world, because the light of his kindness, of his sympathy, of the love that is growing, the virtue that is springing up in his heart, all fill the soul with light. There is nothing now that he lacks in life, for he has become the king of it.

Such a person becomes a healer, a real healer. He heals a person with his glance, with a kind word, with his hand, by his comfort, by his nature. What a healing that is! Unpretentious, unassuming; the real healing is when a man is in sympathy with another's trouble and gives him a helping hand. He is the possessor of the true wine. He who can send from his eye the glance that proves the sympathy and help he is anxious to give, what a healing power he has! Is it not like a young bird being taken in beneath the brooding wings? There cannot be a more beautiful process of healing than this among all the different methods by which people have endeavored to heal.

Some may ask what, then, should be the object which one should love in this life? Is there any particular object that a man can be recommended to love? Is it best to love one's parent or friends? To love one friend only, or to love just one beloved of the opposite sex? Should one love something in the abstract, some spirit, some ideal, some name, or something, which is beyond man's nature? Or should one love something idealized as the God whom one worships? There are many who say that there is no love which is useful but the love of God. All other forms are worthless. Another says that he or she can love no one who is of the opposite sex, having once been disappointed in this way. Another will say, 'I will love no human being; I can love my dog or my cat better. They do not disappoint me, whereas I was once disappointed in man.' Another says, 'I love my money, because if I am in need that is the only friend that comes to my rescue. The deposit I have in my bank does more for me than anyone can do. Why than should I not love my money?' And still another person says, 'If God is all, if He is to have all love, then why not love the chair, or the table, or a book, or the work that a person does a work of art, a piece of music; is it not the same?' But all these questions are voiced by hearts which have once been disappointed, once broken. They broke and became closed, and once the doors of the heart are closed there is no light to guide its path. That is what is so beautiful in the little English song, 'The light of a whole life dies when love is done.' There is no light when love is done. When love is done, the heart is closed.

Questions and Answers by Thich Nhat Hanh
The Benefits of Silence

Q: Could tell us about the benefits of silence and how we could bring that home with us from this retreat?
A:Many of us have realized in the last few days that silence can be enjoyable. We realize that there are many things that we do not have to say, and that then we can reserve the time and energy to do other things that can help us to look more deeply into ourselves and things around us.
If you are pushed by your habit energy to say something, don't say it. Instead, take a notebook and write it down. A day or two later, read what you wrote, and you might find out that it would have been an awful thing to say. So slowly you become master of yourself, and you know what to say and what not to say.
I remember one time I proposed to a sister that she practice silence. She was an elder nun and she had a few negative seeds in her that prevented her from being happy. She was just a little bit too hard on the other sisters. I proposed to her that she was a very talented person, very skillful in many things, and she could make many people happy if only she knew how to be silent and to say only things that needed to be said.
I proposed to her that she use only three sentences for three months. She could repeat these three sentences as many times as she wanted and I told her that if she practiced that for a week, she would feel happiness right away. The first sentence was, "Dear sister,is there anything I can do to help you?" The second sentence was, "Did you like what I did to help you?" The third was, "Would you have any suggestion that I can do it better?" If she could say that, she would make many people happy and the happiness would go back to herself very quickly.
In the family we can practice silence. We can ask the other members of the family to agree that we will practice silence for three days or for a week. It is very beneficial. There will be a transformation after the period of practicing silence.

So the thing to do when working on a motorcycle, as in any other task,is to cultivate the peace of mind which does not separate one's self from one's surroundings. When that is done successfully, then everything else follows naturally. Peace of mind produces right values, right values produce right thoughts. Right thoughts produce right actions and right actions produce work which will be a material reflection for others to see of the serenity at the center of it all.

Light Breeze

As regards feeling pain, like a hand cut in battle,
consider the body a robe

you wear. When you meet someone you love, do you kiss their clothes? Search out

who's inside. Union with God is sweeter than body comforts.
We have hands and feet

different from these. Sometimes in dream we see them.
That is not

illusion. It's seeing truly. You do have a spirit body;
don't dread leaving the

physical one. Sometimes someone feels this truth so strongly
that he or she can live in

mountain solitude totally refreshed. The worried, heroic
doings of men and women seem weary

and futile to dervishes enjoying the light breeze of spirit.

The stage of ego based consciousness is a natural stage in the journey of the soul. Actually it involves the full exploration of one aspect of the soul’s being: the will. Your will constitutes the bridge between the inner and the outer world. The will is that part of you that focuses your soul’s energy into the material world. The will may be inspired by the desire for power or by the desire for oneness. This depends on the state of your inner awareness. When a soul reaches the end of the ego stage, the will becomes more and more an extension of the heart. The ego or the personal will is not destroyed but it is flowing in accordance with the heart’s wisdom and inspiration. At this point the ego joyfully accepts the heart as its spiritual guide. The natural wholeness of the soul is restored.

Look for the good, the beautiful and the true in everything. Look into the essence of things, not just their outer form. The Agni Yoga teachings suggest, “Behold as under a magnifying glass the good, and belittle the signs of evil tenfold, lest thou remain as before.”

In realizing we are in essence the soul, the Divine light within, our purpose and work becomes clearer—to shine light into the world and to relieve suffering, darkness and ignorance. By radiating the light of love, illumination and purpose, we help create a new heaven on earth.

Each of us has experienced moments of heartfelt kindness, of courageous daring, of steady strength, of deep inner peace. These are fleeting experiences of our soul—our deepest essence, our highest self—who we truly are. When we experience an expanded sense of oneness with all life, when we forgive someone who has harmed us, when we inspire others with clear insight, when we courageously do what is right--but not popular--these are expressions of our soul. For the soul embodies not just loving compassion, but also purposeful will and wise intelligence. Balanced love, light and will are the signatures of the soul.

The soul is referred to in the Christian tradition as “the Christ within, the inner divinity” in each person. The realm of the soul is called “the kingdom of God.” In the Jewish tradition, the soul is sometimes referred to as “the vital principle.” In the Hindu tradition, it’s called the “Atma” or “Self.”In the Buddhist tradition, it is “the Buddha Mind,” “the mind of enlightenment (bodhichitta).” In ancient Greece, the temple of the Oracle at Delphi proclaimed, “Man, know thyself, and thou wilt know the universe and the gods.”
Soul expression is essentially the next evolutionary step in consciousness for humanity.

A Gentleman Is Strict with Himself and Tolerant of Others.

In traditional Chinese Culture, being strict with oneself and tolerant of others is one of the principles a gentleman uses to discipline himself and treat others in society. This is a manifestation of a gentleman’s virtue. Being strict with one-self is a noble character trait, encompassing both behaving righteously and improving oneself. Being tolerant of others means having a demeanor of generosity and forgiveness. This includes several components:

Introspection

This means examining one’s thoughts, words and actions according to moral standards. Confucius once said, “A gentleman examines himself while a villain is demanding of others.” One important difference between a gentleman and villain is whether he can examine himself when issues arise.

Meng Zi said, “If you cared for others but did not achieve acceptance, please ask yourself whether you were compassionate enough. If you persuaded others but did not succeed, please ask yourself whether you had enough wisdom. If you were polite to others, but others did not treat you the same way, please ask yourself if you were sincere enough. When things did not proceed as you expected, please examine yourself for reasons rather than blaming others.” Zeng Shen said, “I examine myself many times each day. Did I do my best to help others? Was I honest with all others? Did I go review the materials teacher presented? Through introspection, one will be more rational and can truly govern himself. A gentleman should constantly examine himself and improve, to establish a noble character.”

Being strict with oneself

This means establishing and restraining one’s capabilities. Confucius said, “Restraining oneself and reviving Li [ethical standards] to achieve Ren [benevolence].” That is to say, only by abstaining from one’s own desires, improper words and misconducts, as well as voluntarily obeying moral standards, can one achieve Ren. One should “not look at things inconsistent with Li, not listen to things inconsistent with Li, not speak things inconsistent with Li, and not do things inconsistent with Li.” Confucius said that by obeying Li and being strict with oneself, everyone could be a gentleman and society would achieve Ren.

Meng Zi said, “I have always been establishing a noble character.” Zeng Shen said, “A gentleman cannot forget his mission.” All these refer to the great responsibility a gentleman has. One should be determined in his faith with a noble character. By insisting on righteousness, he will not be disturbed by surrounding incidents and external interference.

Being alert when one is alone

This means one should be strict with himself even when he is on his own. Through this, one will discipline his inner thoughts and prevent erroneous or selfish thoughts. In Zhong Yong, it is written, “A gentleman is alert when he is on his own.” That is to say, “There are some hidden, subtle thoughts which already exist but have not yet developed. One could be aware of it himself although others have yet to find it out. One should abstain from his own desires even at the earliest stage to prevent them from growing. Be careful when speaking and be cautious when acting so that one can meet moral standards.” Being alert when one is alone means having consistency between one’s mind and actions. This openness is new realm of life. There are many ancient anecdotes like this.

Forgiveness

On the issue of human relationships in society, Confucius emphasized generosity and forgiveness. He said, “One should act more like himself, and demand less from others.” “Do not apply something you do not like to others.” Zhu Xi said, “Doing one’s best is loyalty, and considering others’ situation as if one’s own is forgiveness.” That is to to say, be considerate and place yourself in others’ shoes. A gentleman should be strict with himself while generous and forgiving with others. A gentleman should be trustworthy since his words are consistent with his actions. Confucius once said, “When you say something, make sure to keep your word. When you do something, make sure it is completed.” Confucius also said, “A gentleman is cautious with his words, since he considers it shameful when he is unable to follow his words.” When a gentleman saw someone better than himself, he would learn from that person. When a gentleman saw someone who was not good, he would examine himself to see if he had similar problems.

The purpose of a gentleman’s study and improvement was to “realize righteousness to achieve the Tao,” as said by Confucius. In Da Xue, this was summarized as “Cultivate oneself, harmonize the family, manage a nation, and bring peace to the world.” A gentleman should purify his own mind and body, to virtuously achieve the Tao. Only by having high virtues can one be open-minded, kindhearted, and be able to fulfill his social responsibility to safeguard the truth.

Intention and Intuition
The Purpose of an Altar

If you didn’t grow up with an altar in your home, having an altar now may seem like an exotic and unattainable idea. Yet having an altar does not have to be complicated or difficult, nor does it need to be based on a religion or a set of ideas that don’t seem to relate to you. An altar can be a simple, personal expression of what you want to focus on right now. You do not have to build anything or take up a lot of space. You do not have to buy anything new or follow a complex set of instructions to create your altar. All you have to do is have a general understanding of what an altar is and the willingness to allow yourself access to this wonderful, ancient tool of transformation.

At its most essential, an altar is simply a raised structure that serves as a resting place for meaningful objects. It focuses the eye and provides a place for contemplation and, if so desired, ritual. All of these elements can be quite simple. One idea for a simple altar is a pot with a bulb planted in it, set on a box. This altar to growth can act as a reminder to you that all living things bloom in their time. A simple ritual might be to write down dreams you would like to see come to fruition on scraps of paper. You might place these scraps of paper in the box, or under the flowerpot, or in an envelope you prop against the pot. As the flower grows, so will your dreams.

If you look around your home, you may find that you have already created altarlike arrangements without even really thinking about it; this is something we humans do quite naturally. A candle, a decorative box, and a vase of flowers are just a few of the common household objects that lend themselves naturally to the creation of an altar. Simply add intention and intuition, and you have created your first altar. Remember that it isn’t necessarily about the objects you place at your altar—it is the time you spend with it daily, taking the time to be with it for your sacred time.

Would you like to describe what your altar is ?

Leaving a Positive Footprint
Blessing Space

Physical space acts like a sponge, absorbing the radiant of all who pass through it. And, more likely than not, the spaces we move through each day have seen many people come and go. We have no way of knowing whether the energy footprints left behind by those who preceded us will invigorate us or drain us. Yet we can control the energy footprint we leave behind for others. In blessing each space we enter, we orchestrate a subtle energy shift that affects not only our own experiences in that space but also the experiences of the individuals who will enter the space after us. While we may never see the effects our blessing has had, we can take comfort in the fact that we have provided grace for those that follow after us.

When you bless a room or an entire building, you leave a powerful message of love and light for all those who will come after you. Your blessings thus have myriad effects on the environments through which you pass. Old, stagnant energy is cleared, creating a vacuum into which fresh and invigorating energy can freely flow. The space is thus rendered harmonious and nourishing, and it becomes a hub from which positive feelings are transmitted. Intent is the key component of the blessings you leave in your physical wake. If your intent involves using your own consciousness as a tool for selflessly spreading grace, your blessings will never go awry. Whether you feel more comfortable performing a solo blessing or prefer to call upon your spirit guides for assistance, visualize each space you enter becoming free of toxins, chaos, and negativity as you speak your blessing. Then imagine the resultant emptiness being replaced by pure, healing white light and loving energy. Even a quick mindful thought of love can bless a space.

This type of blessing is cumulative and will grow each time you bestow it. Try blessing every home, business, and office you visit for an entire week and observing the effects of your goodwill. Your affirmative energy footprint will help brighten your day as you contemplate your blessing’s future impact on your siblings in humanity and your environment.

Of Equal Worth
Humility

The notion of humility as a virtue brings numerous images to mind. We tend to envision those rare individuals who humbly bear life’s struggles while downplaying their own strengths. Yet humility is also associated with people whose insecurities compel them to judge themselves unfavorably as a matter of course. The true definition of humility, however, does not correspond precisely with either of these images. Humility is not passivity. Rather, it is an utter lack of self-importance. The individuals who embody the concept of humility appreciate that each human being on the planet occupies a unique place on an infinite spectrum of development. Though they can take pride in their own accomplishments, they also understand that the people they interact with each day are as valuable and have as much to offer the world as they themselves do.

To be humble is to accept that while there will always be individuals more and less advanced than yourself, those on all parts of the spectrum of development can provide you with insights that further your personal evolution. Recognizing these insights is a matter of opening yourself to the fact that not only do others think and feel differently than you, but their life experiences have shaped them in a very different way than yours have shaped you. This means that while you may have a greater understanding in some areas, others will always be able to teach you something. When you cultivate a genuine yearning to know what skills and talents those you encounter have been blessed with, you cannot help but learn humility. You instinctively understand that emotions like envy breed resistance that prevents you from growing, and that being flexible in your interactions with others will help you connect with unexpected mentors.

When you practice humility, you want to become as accomplished and evolved as you can possibly be, yet you are willing to submit to the expertise of others to do so. You understand the scope of your aptitudes yet you choose to eradicate arrogance from your attitude, and you can distinguish the value you possess as an individual while still acting in the interests of your fellow human beings. Humility, simply put, is a form of balance in which you can celebrate your own worth while sincerely believing that every other person on the planet is just as worthy as you.

That which you are, your true self, you love it, and whatever you do, you do for your own happiness. To find it, to know it, to cherish it is your basic urge. Since time immemorial you loved yourself, but never wisely. Use your body and mind wisely in the service of the self, that is all. Be true to your own self, love yourself absolutely. Do not pretend that you love others as yourself. Unless you have realized them as one with yourself, you cannot love them. Don't pretend to be what you are not, don't refuse to be what you are. Your love of others is the result of self- knowledge, not its cause. Without self-realization, no virtue is genuine. When you know beyond all doubting that the same life flows through all that is and you are that life, you will love all naturally and spontaneously. When you realize the depth and fullness of yourself, you know that every living being and the entire universe are included in your affection. But when you look at anything as separate from you, you cannot love it for you are afraid of it. Alienation causes fear and fear deepens alienation. It is a vicious circle. Only self-realization can break it. Go for it resolutely.

Authenticity

Know what is the real, your fact, because only a fact can be changed. If you want to transform yourself, you must know your facticity. You cannot change a fiction. You are violent and you think you are nonviolent-- then there is no possibility of any transformation. That non-violence is nowhere, so you cannot change. And the violence is there, but you are not aware of it, so how can you change it?
--------
First know the facts as they are. How to know the facts? Encounter them without your interpretations.
--------
If this consideration is there, by and by you will become authentic. And this authenticity will not be like that of an animal. This authenticity will be like that of a saint, because the more you know how ugly you are, the more you know how violent you are, the more you penetrate inside your facts and become aware of the nonsense that you are doing, the more this awareness will help you. And by and by your ugliness will drop away, will wither away, because if you are aware of your ugliness it cannot continue.
--------

You cannot deceive anyone unless someone is ready to be deceived; that is another thing. By authenticity I mean: remember you facticity. Always sort it out from your interpretations. Throw away your interpretations and look at the fact of what you are. And do not be afraid, then you will never be able to change it. If it is there, accept that it is there; consider it.

This is what consideration means: consider it, look at it in its total nakedness. Move around it, go to its roots, analyze it. See why it is there, how you help it to be there, how you feed it, how you protect it, how it has grown to be such a big tree. See your ugliness, your violence, your hatred, your anger, how you have protected it, how you have helped it to grow up to now. Look at the roots; look at the whole phenomenon.
--------
It is you who have been helping it to become rooted in you. It is your creation. You can drop it immediately-- just now. You can leave it, and then there is no need to look again toward it. But before you can do this, you will have to know it-- what it is, the whole mechanism, the whole complexity of it, how you help it every moment.

The Real Work

There is one thing in this world that you must never forget to do. If you forget everything else and not this, there's nothing to
worry about; but if you remember everything else and forget this, then you will have done nothing in your life.

It's as if a king has sent you to some country to do a task, and you perform a hundred other services, but not the one he sent you to do. So human beings come to this world to do particular work. That work is the purpose, and each is specific to the person. If you don't do it, it's as though a priceless Indian sword were used to slice rotten meat. It's a golden bowl being used to cook turnips, when one filing from the bowl could buy a hundred suitable pots. It's a knife of the finest tempering nailed into a wall to hang things on.

You say, "But look, I'm using the dagger. It's not lying idle." Do you hear how ludicrous that sounds? For a penny, an iron nail could be bought to serve the purpose. You say, "But I spend my energies on lofty enterprises. I study jurisprudence and philosophy and logic and astronomy and medicine and all the rest."
But consider why you do those things. They are all branches of yourself.

Remember the deep root of your being, the presence of your lord. Give your life to the one who already owns your breath and your moments. If you don't, you will be exactly like the man who takes a precious dagger and hammers it into his kitchen wall for a peg to hold his dipper gourd. You'll be wasting valuable keenness and foolishly ignoring your dignity and your purpose.

Dreams

People come to me and I look at them, and I see
that they are fast asleep, dreaming. Their problems
are out of their dreams, and they want to solve
them. They cannot be solved because they are not real. How can you solve an unreal problem? If it exists, it can be solved-- but it
is nowhere; it cannot be solved. An unreal problem-- how can it be solved? It can be solved only by an unreal answer. But that unreal answer will create other problems which again will be unreal. And then you fall ad nauseam; there is no end to it.

If you want to come to meet reality.....And to meet reality is to meet God. God is not something hiddden somewhere in the sky, it is the reality around you. God is not hidden; you are hidden in an unreality. God is the nearest immediate presence, but you are hidden in a capsule of your own unreal world and you go on protecting it-- and the center of it is the ego.
----

Nothing real can be dissolved. How can you dissolve it? If something is real, it cannot be destroyed; it will remian. And it will remain whatsoever you do. Only unreal things can be dissolved. They can disappear, they can simply evaporate into nowhere, into nothingness. Your ego can dissolve because it is unreal. It is just a thought, a notion; it has no substance to it.

Gratitude

We sat down for a chat with Eckhart one afternoon and asked him some questions. In this issue, Eckhart reveals his thoughts on Gratitude.

Question: Does the feeling and expression of gratitude help to raise consciousness?

Eckhart Tolle: We are talking about a deeper gratitude. There are more superficial forms of gratitude, and that is not what we are talking about. By that I mean, to be grateful that someone else is worse off than you are… sometimes that is a source of gratitude. People say “Oh I really should be grateful, because look at this person – they are worse off than I am, so I should be grateful.” That’s not the true gratitude, that’s the gratitude that is arrived at through thinking, where you compare yourself to others.

The deeper gratitude is not arrived at through some conceptual process, where you explain to yourself why you should be grateful. That’s a superficial form of gratitude, that’s not really what it is, that’s ultimately to do with ego.

More fundamental than the true form of gratitude is the deep sense of appreciation. It’s not to do with what you are telling yourself in your head, it’s something that you sense in the present moment, it’s an appreciation of the “is-ness” of this moment.

We are using words as pointers. When I say “appreciation”, some people might ask “What do you mean by appreciation?” It’s to feel that the world around you is alive, and you share in the aliveness of the world that surrounds you. There’s the outer aliveness, in other human beings, even in your surroundings – whether it’s nature, or even in a room, you sense the aliveness of what’s around you at this moment, through your own aliveness. And with that comes the feeling, “it’s good to be alive”. You appreciate the many forms of life that are arising at this moment. You don’t impose judgment on the form that life takes at this moment, because the form that life takes changes continuously around you – one moment you’re here, the next moment you’re somewhere else.

It’s a deep sense of Being-ness, or aliveness, and through that you appreciate what is, in your life. And by saying “in your life”, it always means in the present moment, because apart from the present moment, there is no such thing as “your life”. If there’s something else there that’s not the present moment that you call “your life”, it’s a mental construct.

You have formed an image of “me” and “my life”, it’s a story, and you mistake that for your life. Fundamentally your life is whatever form this moment takes. Your life is always what is now. That’s your life. Not some story you’re telling yourself in your head.

Through that appreciation, you are sensing a sense of Oneness with what’s outside and what’s inside. There is no longer a separation that is created by excessive conceptual thinking between other people and the self, the separation is created by judgment. There is a sense of allowing the present moment to be as it is. All these are fundamental aspects of gratitude. It’s that openness to the ‘is-ness’ of this moment. With that openness, comes an appreciation for the “is-ness” of this moment. There is no longer a denial or a rejection of what is, because you have some story in your mind that clashes with what is around you at this moment. And that’s how many people live, so they go through life continuously, there’s a clash between their ideas of what should be now, and what is ‘now’.

The greatest form of suffering and frustration and non-fulfillment is the clash between the mental story of what “should” be and what is. That’s really the root of the madness. There cannot be gratitude when that operates in your life.

When something seemingly negative happens, people may find it very hard to say “Okay, I should be grateful, even for this”. I’m not saying you should do that, because even that is an idea in your head. It’s better to forget about trying to be grateful when something seemingly negative happens, and simply let go of the mental judgment of it, and say “This is what is, this is what happened, and this is the situation now”. If you can be free of mental judgment and denial or projection, complaining, and so on… just allow what is, and then something deeper emerges, even in a seemingly negative situation.

By coming into this place of acceptance, of the inevitable ‘is-ness’ of now, your inner state is no longer ultimately dependant on what is happening or not happening outside. That is a vital transformation of consciousness, where the external world no longer determines your state of consciousness.

So when something seemingly bad happens, say “this is”. Whether it is a small thing or a large thing, be open to that. If you’re open to the ‘is-ness’ of what is, something within you which we could call “peace” arises. Sometimes it’s very subtle, and you can’t notice it at first.

You’re not grateful for the seemingly bad thing, but you’re grateful that you can still be at peace, even in this situation. Internally you feel that by accepting, peace arises. Even in seemingly bad circumstances. And what is that peace? It’s an inner sense of aliveness, being-ness, presence. It’s the source of all gratitude.

There can be gratitude even when something bad happens. Not for the bad, but for the fact that even in the face of something seemingly negative, there is still peace in the background. But you won’t find that until you first accept what is.

Gratitude is very important. It transforms your whole life, if you can remember the importance of being grateful for life. As you go through your day, every day, you can even have little reminders – of the importance of being appreciative of life.

Every person has to verify for themselves, what can I be grateful for at this moment?

Sense the being that you are – not just the physical, but the sense of your own presence. That’s a great source of joy, to feel your own presence, it cannot really be defined. That’s the ultimate gratitude.

Thanks mudra,

I needed this thread. There is much widom here -- some of it I seem to have forgotten as I have become more cynical over the years.

From a somewhat different religious perspective consider the following:

One of the other posts on this thread made me think of the following passage from a poem by Walt Whitman (I think Song of Myself from Leaves of Grass):

I believe a leaf of grass is no less than the journey work
of the stars,
And the pismire is equally perfect, and a grain of sand, and
the egg of the wren,
And the tree-toad is a chef-d'oeuvre for the highest,
And the running blackberry would adorn the parlors of heaven,
And the narrowest hinge in my hand puts to scorn all machinery,
And the cow crunching with depress'd head surpasses any statue,
And a mouse is miracle enough to stagger sextillions of infidels.

Nothing can disturb if real silence has happened. Then everything helps it to grow. If you are really silent you can sit in a market, and even the market cannot disturb it. Rather, you feed on the noise of the market and that noise becomes more silence in you. Really, to feel silence a market is needed — because if you have real silence, then the market becomes the background and the silence becomes perfect in contrast. You can feel the inner silence bubbling against the market.

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whomever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

Just listen

Listen. When other people are talking, let them express their thoughts, their opinions, and their feelings, especially their feelings. Don’t just let them talk; listen to what they are saying. Pay attention. Try to understand.

Listen. You don’t have to agree. As a matter of fact, whether you agree or not should be beside the point. Don’t express your opinions or feelings while someone else is expressing his or hers. Do you have a problem with that? Do you feel you need to express your opinion, that you must make your feelings known? When others are speaking, you won’t be heard anyway, and you’ll just lose points for trying.

Listen without waiting for an opportunity to give your side, or pounce on the other person, or correct his or her mistakes. The other person’s reasoning and information is surely full of mistakes and distortions. So what? So is yours.

Listen in sincere silence. It won’t kill you. You don’t need to prove your point. Just listen. Everyone thinks a good listener is smart.

Listen. You don’t need to persuade the other person, just understand. If you don’t, ask, “Could you explain that?” or “What do you really mean?” But don’t give your opinion while the person is talking. Just let him or her talk.

The good listener hears the unspoken thought. Listen for it. When the other person is finished, mention that inner thought. The other person will know you heard and understood.

Then the situation will become quiet because the other person will be listening to your hearing. All the pressure will fade and you can get on with life.

Listen. There is nothing quite like being heard.

I listen to the space between the words others speak. I live in silence where knowing dwells. I make room for life by creating stillness.

Secrets of Heaven and Hell, The
by: Fr. John W. Groff Jr.

The old monk sat by the side of the road. With his eyes closed, his legs crossed and his hands folded in his lap, he sat. In deep meditation, he sat.

Suddenly his zazen was interrupted by the harsh and demanding voice of a samurai warrior. "Old man! Teach me about heaven and hell!"

At first, as though he had not heard, there was no perceptible response from the monk. But gradually he began to open his eyes, the faintest hint of a smile playing around the corners of his mouth as the samurai stood there, waiting impatiently, growing more and more agitated with each passing second.

"You wish to know the secrets of heaven and hell?" replied the monk at last. "You who are so unkempt. You whose hands and feet are covered with dirt. You whose hair is uncombed, whose breath is foul, whose sword is all rusty and neglected. You who are ugly and whose mother dresses you funny. You would ask me of heaven and hell?"

The samurai uttered a vile curse. He drew his sword and raised it high above his head. His face turned to crimson and the veins on his neck stood out in bold relief as he prepared to sever the monk's head from its shoulders.

"That is hell," said the old monk gently, just as the sword began its descent. In that fraction of a second, the samurai was overcome with amazement, awe, compassion and love for this gentle being who had dared to risk his very life to give him such a teaching. He stopped his sword in mid-flight and his eyes filled with grateful tears.

"And that," said the monk, "is heaven."

On Freedom

Kahlil Gibran

At the city gate and by your fireside I have seen you prostrate yourself and worship your own freedom,
Even as slaves humble themselves before a tyrant and praise him though he slays them.
Ay, in the grove of the temple and in the shadow of the citadel I have seen the freest among you wear their freedom as a yoke and a handcuff.
And my heart bled within me; for you can only be free when even the desire of seeking freedom becomes a harness to you, and when you cease to speak of freedom as a goal and a fulfilment.

You shall be free indeed when your days are not without a care nor your nights without a want and a grief,
But rather when these things girdle your life and yet you rise above them naked and unbound.

And how shall you rise beyond your days and nights unless you break the chains which you at the dawn of your understanding have fastened around your noon hour?
In truth that which you call freedom is the strongest of these chains, though its links glitter in the sun and dazzle your eyes.

And what is it but fragments of your own self you would discard that you may become free?
If it is an unjust law you would abolish, that law was written with your own hand upon your own forehead.
You cannot erase it by burning your law books nor by washing the foreheads of your judges, though you pour the sea upon them.
And if it is a despot you would dethrone, see first that his throne erected within you is destroyed.
For how can a tyrant rule the free and the proud, but for a tyranny in their own freedom and a shame in their own pride?
And if it is a care you would cast off, that care has been chosen by you rather than imposed upon you.
And if it is a fear you would dispel, the seat of that fear is in your heart and not in the hand of the feared.

Verily all things move within your being in constant half embrace, the desired and the dreaded, the repugnant and the cherished, the pursued and that which you would escape.
These things move within you as lights and shadows in pairs that cling.
And when the shadow fades and is no more, the light that lingers becomes a shadow to another light.
And thus your freedom when it loses its fetters becomes itself the fetter of a greater freedom.

Chakra means Wheel in Sanskrit

The body has spinning energy centers that look like spinning wheels and are called Chakras. The seven main chakras are described as being aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each chakra is linked to sound, light and associated with a certain color, multiple specific functions, an aspect of consciousness, a classical element and other distinguishing characteristics.

The chakras are thought to vitalise the physical body and to be associated with interactions of both a physical and mental nature.

The Mind Makes It Matter

Just as the film in a projector transforms light into the movie we observe on the screen, the ideas imprinted in the mind convert the one light of Source into the rainbow of frequencies we experience as life. As we look at the world around us, we see a multicolored projection of our inner self. The frequencies of life we are attracted to represent the aspects of ourselves we are most comforable with. The frequencies we are not attracted to remind us of the aspects of ourselves we've yet to embrace.

Change our ideas - the mind's film - and everything changes. When we stop identifying with our ideas altogether, the film dissolves completely, allowing light to move through us without resistance. We become full-spectrum beings - holographic focal points of the sun - radiating the light of God into the world. When things no longer matter, life once again becomes light.

No matter how long you may keep trying, struggling, striving, wanting, and seeking, you will one day come to the One Way that is easy and sure. You have the right to walk in the hard way as long as you choose; but when you are tired of wasting time, when you have fallen and bruised yourself to the point of giving up, when you have proven that man is a 'broken reed' and not worthy to be depended upon, when you have satisfied yourself as to your own weakness, and when you are convinced that there is no way out, then you will find the way in, and you will find it to be an easy way, filled with love and peace- the secret place where wisdom, courage, health and strength abound. Then you will begin to live.

From 1932 until 1954 Lloyd Arthur Meeker wrote and spoke using the pen name Uranda. The name Uranda means "He who radiates the harmonizing ray."

Denis Healy has a great way of gently walking a person into the viewpoint of the "All-that-is" and doing healing work from there. Of course it is always effective because it is from the viewpoint of the "All-that-is".

I asked him if he would hold regular internet classes to help people practice operating from that viewpoint. I believe the discipline and routine of attending instructions from a master makes for real progress. It is the "pure doing" that "translates" one.

Once you have the View, although the delusory perceptions of samsara may arise in your mind,
you will be like the sky; when a rainbow appears in front of it, it's not particularly flattered,
and when the clouds appear, it's not particularly disappointed either.
There is a deep sense of contentment.
You chuckle from inside as you see the façade of samsara and nirvana;
the View will keep you constantly amused,

Mudra, if I may respectfully ask you what practices do you routinely or non-routinely engage in to help you stabilize your abilities to live completely in the present and remain in constant contact with cosmic consciousness?

Gnosis

I practice mindfullness .
With mindfullness comes loving kindness
With the practice of loving kindness comes the awareness
of being Love and silence.

Mindfulness

“Mindfulness” is the English translation of the Pali word " sati " bare attention.

When you first become aware of something, there is a fleeting instant of pure awareness just before you conceptualize the thing, before you identify it. That is a state of awareness. Ordinarily, this state is short-lived. It is that flashing split second just as you focus your eyes on the thing, just as you focus your mind on the thing, just before you objectify it, clamp down on it mentally, and segregate it from the rest of existence. It takes place just before you start thinking about it—before your mind says, “Oh, it’s a dog.” That flowing, soft-focused moment of pure awareness is mindfulness. In that brief flashing mind-moment you experience a thing as an un-thing. You experience a softly flowing moment of pure experience that is inter locked with the rest of reality, not separate from it.

When this mindfulness is prolonged by using proper techniques, you find that this experience is profound, and it changes your entire view of the universe.

The Characteristics of Mindfulness

Mindfulness is mirror-thought. It reflects only what is presently hap pening and in exactly the way it is happening. There are no biases.

Mindfulness is nonjudgmental observation. It is that ability of the mind to observe without criticism. With this ability, one sees things without condemnation or judgment. One is surprised by nothing. One simply takes a balanced interest in things exactly as they are in their natural states.

Mindfulness is an impartial watchfulness. It does not take sides.

Mindfulness is nonconceptual awareness.

Mindfulness is present-time awareness. It takes place in the here and now. It is the observance of what is happening right now, in the present moment.

Mindfulness is non-egotistic alertness. It takes place without ref erence to self. With mindfulness one sees all phenomena without references to concepts like “me,” “my,” or “mine.”

Mindfulness is awareness of change. It is observing the passing flow of experience. It is watching things as they are changing. It is seeing the birth, growth, and maturity of all phenomena.

Mindfulness is participatory observation. The meditator is both participant and observer at one and the same time.

There are three fundamental activities of mindfulness.

1. Mindfulness reminds you of what you are supposed to be doing.

2. Mindfulness sees things as they really are.

3. Mindfulness sees the true nature of phenomena.

It seems my conscience has become
more sensitive and places more demands on being mindful.
Pushing me to a new level of demand for mindfulness.

You probably know me by now :-) Begging your pardon, but what are the "proper techniques"?

There is no conflict. You are ALREADY that Awareness, you always have been, and you always will be, even when you're identified with thoughts and thinking. Just like the sun is ALWAYS there even when clouds are covering it. If you are ALREADY formless unmanifested all-encompassing all-knowing Awareness beyond words and concepts, then there is absolutely NOTHING to get, grasp, gain, or obtain. You are ALREADY utterly whole, complete, and perfect, and there is nothing to search for, not even Enlightenment. You are already That. There is only Self-Awareness, the awareness of oneself as Infinitely Everything beyond physicality.

Looking back I would say my entire life has been a meditative process to me .
I very early on have known many moments of contemplation in solitude and quietness.
Books I read and techniques I used inspired me and helped me to go through the many challenges I encountered in my life.
However what stands forward now is the darkness of the soul I went through 8 years ago
.This I overcame by my own through painting, contemplation , meditation and the attitude of letting go . The last book I read is Eckhart Tolle last year. I believe he got his message through to me .
Although the mechanics of my life are not smooth and easy I am completely aware of that silence within ..of that peacefull core that loves all that is and this to me is the most precious gift one could wish for.I may sway from it because as all of us I have a human experience but I always am able to get back to it .

Thank you for answering my question. Now that you explain some more your results are more real to me because it is difficult for me to imagine one simply arriving at simple enlightened states or abilities.

"Dark night of the soul", as with myself too, seems to be de rigueur.

You touched on all of the valid therapies -- reading good books, techniques/processes, and change of environment/personnel.

The spiritual traps (materialism, sensualism, pride) are clearly stated in the best books as is the ideal state and the tools. Due to my increasingly sensitive conscience, mindfulness is becoming more a necessity, in addition to techniques that help me cleanse my conscience daily.

I have not travelled as devotedly and as long as you have on this path, and so it is still a wonder for me to encounter beings such as yourself. I'm still scratching my head and muttering under my breath, "How did they DO that?" :original:

Thank You Mudra for your words of wisdom. Silence or meditation for me simply means to let go of the self of self importance and be humble enough to listen to the words that are carry by the wind as it whispers ever so softly the answers to many of the questions we seek. Silence indeed is golden , take time to listen for it is there in the quietude that you feel and hear the ancients souls that are surrounding us every moment of our lives. For we are not alone and we will never be alone.

Silence within is your best friend . This is how you let go and start to enjoy the view.

until you look within, you live without
when you look within, you are able to go without
when you go within, you begin to clearly see without
when you live within, you finally let go without
when you let go without, you enrich within
when you enrich within, you are all right within and without

this is the formula for the eternal lightness of being ...felt only within

" Try to do everything with a mind that lets go.
If you let go a little you will have a little peace.
If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of peace.
If you let go completely, you will know complete peace and freedom.
