Hey Fellow Avaloners
We need a chat room!
I can't help but notice that there are always quite a few of us online everyday...and yes the posts are insightful and thought provoking but i think that having a chat room would keep our energy, focus and brains stimulated.
And i also realize taht chat rooms need tobe monitored, but i believe that could be worked out among us...i would love to share "real-time" with my friends here!
What does everyone think?

I've thought that Avalon could use a chat room as well. :thumb_yello:

A chat room might be the perfect solution for the board. The message boards could be used as they were intended for information and the chat for our socializing. :thumb_yello:

Thanks for the suggestion Kathleen...
Free messengers services are not set up to accommodate many users in one venue at a time...chat services/rooms are just that...yes, if you wish to have a small get together with a few people you can use IM services but this is hardly sufficient for a group...
There are some alternatives to a traditional "chat room" scenario...i suggested in another post that we may be able to use conferencing type site such as Paltalk...http://www.paltalk.com. I invite you to at least check it out and see how you feel about it.
You can sign up for FREE or pay if you like (if you need or want more features i.e. the ability to see webcams or streaming movies)...i have had a subscription there for 5 years...you can create and open a room within minutes...private (locked) or public....just a thought...you can appoint admins and control whatever you want...if the room is invite only, you can control who comes into the room...Anyway, it's just a suggestion and if anyone is up for it, please send me a message and we can get it started...

Yes I agree.
Blog Talk Radio has a free chatroom and it can be private so the public cannt interrupt.
Then of course there is Skype which has audio as well as file transfer abilities.
Who is going to lead this charge?

Thanks Waterman, good ideas...
I am more then willing to lead the charge...
Let's let the thread mature and see if anyone has anymore suggestions on possible chat sites...
I appreciate the interest so far, i just think it would be great to interact on a more personal and immediate level...who knows what the possibilities are...
Please post the addresses of any chat sites you may know of or already use.

I agree it would be a good idea and might even help to keep the more, day-to-day, mundane posts to a minimum in the rest of the forum.
Mind you, someone will have to moderate the chatroom too I guess and the mods work hard enough as it is now.

Hi all
I own a irc (chat) network and would be more than happy to provide free access to avalon members and anyone else who wishes to join. At the moment it is named after my domain 2012info.ca but can be renamed to match the avalon domain in desired. The network can be accessed via the web through a java interface or with a IRC client like mIRC.
via web: http://2012info.ca/chat/
or with a client: irc.2012info.ca (irc://irc.2012info.ca)
To the Mods or Founders: it can easily be renamed to irc.avalon.net just ask.
Regards
GaiaLove

as a footnote to the post i made above. The network has several security features and can provide user and channel registrations and is monitored 24/7

Your probably correct, in a forum such as this good communication amongst all the administration is essential in the interest of efficiency and should be left as is, if it exists. I am offering an alternative for the general population.

The mods do have a little chatbox and we use it for all kinds of stuff.
we laugh a lot....grinn.:wub2:
But we use it especially to talk about how we can handle issues, how to respond to members, inform us all on what we are doing and give a lot of feedback to each other.
It is moderation tool.

I have been wanting this since the day Avalon opened, and there was a thread started then too
I would like one that you can create your own private rooms etc so there can be one on one conversation or small groups discussing something without public interference or judgment
these things exist all over but the good ones cost money for hosting
IRC does have a learning curve to use and software is needed but if that is all there is...

Colin, please confirm my thoughts on this.
Everyone... as far as I know adding a new member chat area to the forum would cause a major slowdown of the forum.
This has been discussed since the onset of Avalon's creation and it is known that opening something like this up will do nothing but cause hosting server issues. If anybody has suggestions/experiences please provide to myself, Colin or Gareth.
Thank you Heretic for your IRC suggestion above.
Thanks

well I cant take the IRC credit and praise, as that belongs to GaiaLove, but on behalf of GaiaLove I thank you :original:
I think your right concerning the latency issues but it really depends on how much upstream the host here has
IMHO it would have to be another host or a better plan with Avalon's current provider to compensate
as far as it being another host, especially one that is designed for the loads chat rooms bring, a simple link on this site, and some proper decorations, you wouldn't even be able to tell you have left Avalon at all
I am sure there are people here more savvy than I am on this but if no one can enlighten us on this in a day or so I will do some research myself

a chat room would be a good solution for posting, but i personally find a lot of valuable information on forums, that would not be possible with a chat room since it is all real time and doesn't record.

Chat room... bad idea.
People literally chit-chat in chat rooms and tend to say absolutely nothing. You can't search them well, and people get so hung up in the moment they don't stop to think what they are writing. On a forum you can change everything a million times before you post it, and then edit it if it sounds wrong.
Seriously, as sensitive as a lot of people are on this forum I can't imagine what would happen when people start to make their argument but have to keep hitting the Return button... all the while they're trying to state their knowledge or case and people are jumping down their necks because the Poster hadn't finished putting everything up yet.

There are 6 rooms total. Most of the idiots go into the first room. The rest are empty. It does go down on occasion though.

The Average Chat Client does record. You could post the log file's interesting part after some editing.
On a side note. I have been on irc.2012info.ca # Avalon for a day or so, and no one logged in beside [10:31] <cy_kotic> hey
So this might not be very useful.

The network is new and is not populated as of yet, which would explain why it's so quite there at the moment. It would provide the Camelot/Avalon population with pretty much exclusivity. All channels would be related to the topics relevant to people here.
Colin, please confirm my thoughts on this.

As for the servers and bandwidth, i would pick up the tab for that. I own the ones running now

Any user can register their nickname as well as there own channel (room) if so desired. channels can be hidden or public. IRC software is recommended for admin but the existing java based interface is easily used and accessed on the web.

You guys are GREAT!
And Gaia....i did stop into your chat room this evening and met Dragaon...was great help...and the funny thing is i have been learning IRC all this week and hadn't checked this thread until tonight.
As for some of the other posters' concerns about what will happen to this forum...well NOTHING of course....this is where everyone comes to read and exchange info...
I will be opening a room in paltalk for Avalon chat....when it is setup i will post the link and some instructions on how to proceed....the ONLY reason i suggest paltalk is because the program has voice so people can talk instead of type...and thats great for staying on topic and easier then typing...at least for me LOL...

If this is true it's not impressive. I know a few sites that are popular and have a perfectly functional chatroom without problems. One in which you can still hide if you want (in which you can make secret rooms). So why not? It doesn't require moderation. Nor ruin the forum and it's not a lot of hassle with the right software. An efficient chatroom speeds communication up between users considerably allowing others to get to know each other much more quickly. I'm skeptical it would slow down the forum. Chat software is avaliable that would contain all the needed requirements I'm not technical about it but I'm sure others would be capable. Everyone here basically wants one. So much so they are creating their own chatrooms lol.
P.S
I wouldn't call a chatbox a moderation tool. It's a chatbox. Even if we are not allowed a say in the chat, there is no reason why it can't be public unless there is something to hide. Making it secret seems illogical it would only encourage abuse. If anything with moderation you want the contrary, transparency.

I suggest that the people in favor of a chatbox organize themselves and DO it.
Post the link and let people decide to join or not.

Interesting. You already have a chatbox in secret. That would be two chatboxes. :roll1: But our public one would not be connected to the site you are suggeting a link? That is not the same if it's not inbuilt into the forum it becomes a seperate thing altogether. The difference is clear isn't it? We don't have the tools nor the permission to make a chatroom inbuilt into the forum it's for the owners.
It certainly is up to everyone to sort a chatroom out if they want one. Take it into consideration there is a demand on this particular site though. If I made that much effort I'd make my own site in that case. :naughty:

A chat room can not be moderated, edited or deleted. Once someone says something in a chat, it is out there for all to hear. The logs can be edited, but the original message still goes through.

I was away the last few weeks as I drove across Canada twice on a business trip. (avoid Canadian road trips in winter folks) T'is good to be home. I noticed the chat room has barely been used. Anyone have any theories as to why? I still feel that real-time conversation is as important a medium for us as a forum like this one is, one compliments the other.

I was checking it daily there for a while
sometimes irc.2012info.ca would be down, and I couldn't get in
then occasionally I could get in and no one was in the channel
I would stick around a bit sometimes and found no one would show up
I just figured all the drama here had something to do with it
so I never said anything about it
I will start popping in again
