We hung our new Kosmos cottage kerosene lamp.

These lamps are incredible and blow the garden variety hurricane lamp away. They are about as bright as a thirty watt bulb. The light is golden yellow and very adequate for reading by. They are not quite so bright as
an Aladdin kerosene lamp,

but are much less expensive and do not require the fragile and expensive aladdin mantle

they derive their light from a large flat wick arranged in a round burner

Being an absolute survival nut as is my no longer on this site friend Donny, have things in place and widely spread around dorset. I think it would depend on what you are preparing for that would be the key. You can store all the food to survive but if the catastrophe affects water and not food, then we are in a different survival situation.

We chose to bug in rather than bug out, and are admittedly highly vulnerable to being forced to evacuate.
Until we are able to address that, we have chosen the route of Harry Truman. Harry ran a hunting lodge on Spirit Lake at Mt Saint Helens. He refused to leave because he had no where to go, and was buried when the mountain blew it's top

Our strategy right now is to take advantage of what's left of the economy to get as far ahead as we can while we can, while reducing debt, and then striking a balance between current living and putting away for emergencies.
I found a nice Kerosine heater that is 99.9% efficient and can be used indoors to heat up to about 1000 sq ft. Just starting to get cold here now, so haven't tried it yet.
Meantime, we're working on enlightening any who listen to our likely trials to come, and trying to get them to start thinking in terms of community.

Just wondering how this is going . People look at me strange when I try and tell them whats coming and how they should prepare

It's not easy. Unconfrontable to most people. They don't dare consider it's possible.
I've gotten a few people about 20% of the way there. Not enough to make much of a difference yet, I'm afraid.
At this point it looks like 99.99% will be caught with their pants down. Not something I'm satisfied.
It's still not obvious enough. another couple of months, and I figure it's going to start becoming a concern to a much larger percentage.
Preparing others will be much easier at that point.

I am planning to buy heirloom seeds online within the next two days for the raised garden plot we have prepared for next summer.
