It is believed that the columns were formed by those reflecting light from the bright streetlamps and other lights on the ground - beaming it back downwards again.
Skies all over Europe have been filled with such natural phenomena during the cold snap of recent weeks.

Oh dear, another pathetic attempt to cover up whatever this really is. The "natural phenomena theory" is so over used now, that they really ought to come up with a new line.:roftl:

I will go with that explanation. I would guess that the orange one of the left would be a high pressure sodium lamp and the one one the right a metal hylide lamp.
