Governments across Europe tremble as angry people take to the streets

Governments across Europe tremble as angry people take to the streets

Ian Traynor, Europe editor
The Guardian, Saturday 31 January 2009

France paralysed by a wave of strike action, the boulevards of Paris resembling a debris-strewn battlefield. The Hungarian currency sinks to its lowest level ever against the euro, as the unemployment figure rises. Greek farmers block the road into Bulgaria in protest at low prices for their produce. New figures from the biggest bank in the Baltic show that the three post-Soviet states there face the biggest recessions in Europe.

It's a snapshot of a single day – yesterday – in a Europe sinking into the bleakest of times. But while the outlook may be dark in the big wealthy democracies of western Europe, it is in the young, poor, vulnerable states of central and eastern Europe that the trauma of crash, slump and meltdown looks graver.

What shocks me is that I've heard like once about Iceland. Seems like nobody here really cares.

I do hope that they as such a small country manage to get off their arses and live the way they should, independently, autonomously.
This may be far fetched, but hey, if anyone can do it then they, who have managed to live on such a forlorn island thousands of years ago already.
They sure have the music and hopefully the spirit for it.

Moreover, I am curious whether this is a good thing or not. Rioting is about the worst form of 'non-capitalism' I can imagine. If people took their energy into actually organising an alternative way of living that simply undermines the government, all this chaos wouldn't be necessary.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if these riots were provoked, wanted and planned.
Bread and games.

If anyone has an idea where to get a truly independent article on the Iceland situation I'd be happy to hear about it.

Blessings Czymra,

Yes, I agree. Waterman has made the suggestion to involve ourselves in an alternative currency.

I'm onboard already. Wonder how things are moving along?
Damn it man, I really wanted to visit Iceland and all but with this situation I wonder if that's possible.

Thanks for the links!
