7.9 magnitude quake sparks tsunami warning for New Zealand

5 mins ago WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A tsunami warning was issued for New Zealand and other small Pacific islands after a major 7.9 magnitude quake struck in the ocean off American Samoa, U.S. government agencies said on Tuesday. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, a branch of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, issued the warning after the quake hit about 120 miles (190 km) southwest of the remote Pacific island of American Samoa. It struck at a depth of 20.5 miles (33 km). A tsunami watch was in effect for Hawaii, Papua New Guinea and other small Pacific islands. The agency noted that its warning did not mean a tsunami had necessarily been generated by the quake. The warning was issued because a quake of this magnitude had the power to generate a destructive tsunami, it said. In 2004, a quake in the Indian Ocean generated a powerful tsunami that killed tens of thousands people in Asia. |

Pacific tsunami kills people in Western Samoa: police
WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A South Pacific tsunami killed an unknown number of people in Western Samoa on Wednesday, a local police spokeswoman said, as the island nation's people fled to higher ground after a big sub-sea quake. "The tsunami has struck some parts of the country," a local police spokeswoman said by phone. Asked if there had been any deaths, she added: "Yes" and then hung up. The epicenter of the 8.0 magnitude quake was located 120 miles southwest of American Samoa, which lies near Western Samoa, the U.S. Geological Survey said. http://www.reuters.com/article/world...dChannel=11619 |

Re: 7.9 magnitude quake sparks tsunami warning for New Zealand
The wave has come ashore on East Cape= no damage. Will be at Auckland in about one hour. It is estimated to do no damage because of being small wave and also arriving at low tide.
Don't know anything new about folks in Samoa. P.S. That's a great post with all those details, Gaia. Aloha, Bushycat |
Re: 7.9 magnitude quake sparks tsunami warning for New Zealand
My thoughts go to the folks in Samoa for what they are dealing with right now.
My thoughts also go to our NZ members. Stay safe! |

39 Dead After Massive Pacific Quake Sparks Tsunami A tsunami struck the capital of American Samoa after a powerful 8.3 magnitude quake rocked the Pacific Ocean, U.S. government agencies said, leaving at least 39 dead and 50 injured in the area.
