Anybody with Lakota Language Knowledge?
 

I need help with a sioux word. I'm very curious about it's meaning and been looking for information for some time.

Anybody can help with it?

The word is: MAKASSEWA

The word was spelled to me so it is well written. The only thing I know about it is that it is part of someone's name, like grey-bear, sitting-bull, black-raven in example...

Please help me finding the meaning, it's very important for me.

I tried looking it up through language translators online but to no avail. Have you tried contacting a translator directly or maybe a expert on the subject?

Yes I've tried to contact some Sioux groups but I have never received an answer (and I'm talking of 3 years ago!).

i would try john trudell. and if he can't he will know some1 who can. he woke up a long time ago (i saw it) and even if he's not, now, your inquiry might give him a nudge. he is one of our most extraordinary messengers. one of our greatest poets.

It would be Lakota. Sioux is a French word. There is 3 dialects. Lakota, Nakota, Dakota.
MAKA-SSE-WA

MAKA=Skunk

WA is a suffix in many pronouns so it probably translates as He-Skunk or She-Skunk or something like that. But the SSE is not a translatable word at all.

I looked in some very reliable places so sorry I can't do better!!

BTW John Trudell, as great a man he is, is not available to be the Language expert or even be asked if he knows one by just anyone who is curious.

It could be a solution, Exchanger, but as I said before, it was spelled to me. :wink2:

MAKA can mean skunk, dirt, soil and land. But there's no traduction for SEWA or SE WA. WA could be a preposition "an". But then we have the same problem: I can't find a word "SE" in Lakota... :sad:

The only hint I have is the following: that is part of a "persons" name, and not only that but it's part of the name of several "persons" related in a spiritual way with my wife's family and with me. You could say that it's a family of past times that is connected spiritually with my family. I feel compelled to know what that word means, it's almost compulsive. I don't know why but I feel that knowing that means to have a very important clue for something.

My guess is that this connection goes further than simply two families connected spiritually through time and space. I feel that it has something to do with past lives...

I have just chatted with a Cree buddy from my area. His father is in his eighties and tells me the word you seek definition on means "loud voice". Hope this helps.
