This has been happening in this area forever.

The first documented case was Lady/Skippy the horse near Alamosa in 1967.

I personally flew a camera man from a TV station in Colorado Springs over
a ranch at La Veta Pass near Walsenburg Colorado to film circles left in the
pasture at the site of a mutilation. That was in 1995.

The San Luis Valley is famous for this type of activity.
