The writers of the song have to look in their history books a little more. Firstly, after the American Red Indian, which had several languages depending on the tribe, the first dwellers were indeed from Hispanic origin, thus the first language not Native Indian to be spoken in them there parts was indeed Spanish.
The second important thing to realise also nowadays is that the second most spoken language in the US is English, being topped by, yes you guessed it, Spanish.
Perhaps the song should be 'Tecla un para espaņol'!
Of course it always helps if some people living in a multi cultural society would take a few minutes out and actually learn a different language to that which they were brought up on. The cost for doing this? In monetary terms nothing, but in social terms it's priceless.
