This is an incredible understatement!
Be very clear on this:
1. There is nothing you can say to
ANY officer of the law which cannot/won't be used against you. There is
nothing which you can say which will exonerate you.
In most states you are required by law to identify yourself, upon request, to any L.E.O.
Anything else you say, is a mistake.
2. They are allowed to tell you
any kind of lie they wish. They can not be prosecuted for this! Ever!
You, on the other hand can be prosecuted for simply being mistaken (happens all too often).
If you are being questioned, then you have
no friends in the room.
Michigan v. Jackson, in which the Supreme Court said in 1986 that
police may not initiate questioning of a defendant who has a lawyer or has asked for one unless the attorney is present. The decision applies even to defendants who agree to talk to the authorities without their lawyers.
