I see the point not being advertisement... (Although that can generate the money to maintain the site cost free.) But ownership of the data generated by its users..

Seeing that the owner of the site OWNS the medium the data is on, he OWNS the data also...

Some sites even claim that they own (With user agreement in the TOS.) the intellectual rights over the data.. Handy if one wants to write a book with said data. Also It can't be spying by a government/company, if one reads the data from a company or a user that was volunteered to be stored (Even temporary.) on your medium.. And even volunteered to be scanned for viruses... Computer (or Mind) As a service.
