Chavez is an old-fashioned dictator. He is on a quest for the "socialism of the 21st century" and for that he uses all means necessary. Shutting down TV stations that don't praise him, persecuting political enemies, introducing laws that give the executive superpowers while financing drug-trafickers from Colombia in order to undermine the govern there and do the "revolution".
He is another one doing a "personality cult", similar to what was done in totalitarian regimes in the past. And his rethoric is filled with hatred and divisionism, a classic rich vs. poor strategy.
It's amazing that for some people that think Bush is the devil incarnated, they praise the guy that elevates to tone of totalitarianism to levels much more dangerous.
He has a movement called "Bolivarianism" that is a kind of "Brown Nazism" in terms of zeal and fanaticism.
All of that would be bad enough. But he is not alone. Only Colombia that I can recall is a non-socialist country, and they are fighting guerrillas for decades. All others wish them to fall. They have created a kind of "South American Union" following the European Union model, from which I have learned that it's likely to be a "Soviet Union of Banana Republics".
