Re: *What 6mos. of Preps Has Done For Me*
I have a suggestion for your water purifiers. I recommend getting either a DOULTON or a BERKEY purifier. They are gravity fed only, no electricity or pumping required. Purchase the largest purifier you can affort (the BERKEY offers several sizes of purifier housings) and as many separate filter units as you can afford. The larger units allow more filters to be installed and their greater parallel flow means faster processing. These are the 'professional' units the Red Cross and the Peace Corps use when they go into a back country.
When the filter units become exhausted, they can be cleaned with a rough spounge and placed back in service. They claim each filter is good for several thousand gallons of water, but I cannot vouch for this figure.
I further recommend setting up some type of pre-filtering to clean up the river or lake water before pouring it through the main purifier. Use coffee filters or even use a fine weave cloth (several layers) placed over a fine wire mesh strainer. Several passes may be required to get the water as clear as possible before final processing.
Plus consider this. If everything goes to hell in a hand basket and we lose all of our services and utilities, you will have access to a LARGE supply of fresh drinking water for barter. Since few will prepare, you will be in the driver's seat when it comes to bartering your water for other things you need. When people start getting thirsty they will pay any price to keep from dying of thirst.
Also, consider long-term water STORAGE after it is filtered. I recommend COLLOIDAL SILVER and/or GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT. Both will keep the water from growing microbes and bacteria. The colloidal silver you can make with distilled water, pure silver wire and three nine volt batteries if you wish. Get a book to assist you. They also sell professionally made colloidal silver generators, just make sure they have a battery backup option. The grapefruit seed extract comes in small brown bottles and a little (drop or two) goes a long way for large containers of water.
YOU GOT WATER? YOU GOT LIFE!
Plus, both manufacturers offer a small, back-pack sized unit for mobile purification. Of course, the smaller units will take longer to use, but you can live off them if you are forced out on foot.
