They seem to talk about him as a myth and a legend, was he real?

Here's a short story about Brendan with a mention of Tim Severin at the end.

The Brenden story is unreliable, a patchwork quilt of stories from the time combined to make the myth of St Brenden. The Book by Tim Severn is one of my favorites, what a bloody lunatic to sail the north Atlantic in a skin boat. Very little is known of the types of boats mentioned in the stories during this period as none have been found. So Tim used a lot of guess work to reconstruct this boat but fair play to him a brilliant story.

The Vikings did reach North America and archaeological remains have been found to prove this. http://www.mnh.si.edu/vikings/start.html
