Cool Yahoo to close thousands of free websites

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/geo...cities-05.html

GeoCities will close later this year.
Why is GeoCities not accepting new customers?
We have decided to discontinue the process of allowing new customers to sign up for GeoCities accounts as we focus on helping our customers explore and build new relationships online in other ways. We will be closing GeoCities later this year.

I'm a GeoCities customer. What's happening to my site?
Existing GeoCities accounts have not changed. You can continue to enjoy your web site and GeoCities services until later this year. You don't need to change a thing right now — we just wanted you to let you know about the closure as soon as possible. We'll provide more details about closing GeoCities and how to save your site data this summer, and we will update the help center with more details at that time.

Will something happen to my GeoCities Free or Plus account?
Later this year we will be closing all GeoCities accounts and web sites. We'll send you more details this summer.

They closed the AOL sites last year, and I was probably sent a message, but I use another email for mail. When I finally figured it out, I was glad that I had downloaded all my photos, etc. back to my computer. There were people on the AOL site who had webpages but had not kept their images and docs anywhere EXCEPT AOL. And they were really angry.

Brook.

Will look around and see what is available.
It is just the quantity of items that have to be re-uploaded

also I have two other sites with Geocities that will have to be placed elsewhere

and a friend I uploaded his site initially to Tiscali - he left there to BT and uploaded his site there of course BT & yahoo merged so his site is also going to be lost.

Alyscat
at least I have a back-up of all sites on two seperate compuputers

Welcome to Internet II! This was forecasted that free sites would close down and censorship would increase. I have a feeling this is just the beginning. I'm holding off on buying a new computer until I figure out just how bad it's gonna get.

I will probably just transfer my Geocities account to whatever Yahoo has. I mostly use my webspace to transfer larger files.

TPTB are no match for rogue hackers.

The web will continue no matter what they try to do. There are too many skilled people out there to allow TPTB to get their way with it.
