Hi peaceandlove,

The writers of the song have to look in their history books a little more. Firstly, after the American Red Indian, which had several languages depending on the tribe, the first dwellers were indeed from Hispanic origin, thus the first language not Native Indian to be spoken in them there parts was indeed Spanish.

The second important thing to realise also nowadays is that the second most spoken language in the US is English, being topped by, yes you guessed it, Spanish.

Perhaps the song should be 'Tecla un para español'!

Of course it always helps if some people living in a multi cultural society would take a few minutes out and actually learn a different language to that which they were brought up on. The cost for doing this? In monetary terms nothing, but in social terms it's priceless.

Victoria , Texas (pop. 55,000) is a town about 80 miles west of Houston .

Local Hispanic leaders there, in opposition to pending Immigration Legislation, boycotted all Caucasian owned businesses in the Victoria area this past weekend as a demonstration of their economic impact on the community. Business owners declared the boycott a success as well, pointing out that shoplifting was reduced by 77%, money orders sent out of the country were down by 97%, and the cost of daily clean-up and trash collection was down by 84%. Shoppers reported that they could actually hear English being spoken throughout the community for the first time in recent memory, and customers actually paid for purchases with real money, not government debit cards.

I'm ashamed to admit it...but that was really funny! Some Mexican-Americans made a movie a few years ago called 'A Day Without a Mexican': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8t8DCSP020 It demonstrated how dependent Americans are on Mexicans. Here's a couple of funny ones:

My family and I traveled to Niagara Falls last Memorial Day weekend and we were very surprised to see that at least 85% of tourists were hindu, a mere 2% hispanic and the rest divided between americans, europeans and the rest. Americans worry about latin or hispanic immigration because much of it is illegal immigration but in reality it's not the only wave coming, chinese and hindu people make a big slice of the cake, they just do it quietly and peacefully so is not that noticeable, latin immigrants from Central America are usually poor and uneducated so they come here to get any job is available and I personally think they are of great service; immigrants from South America are more educated because the education system works better in those countries, many of them are professionals or at least have some college education.
I've known a lot of latin people and some of them were illegal immigrants, they explained to me how difficult is for people coming from countries like Colombia to get a visa let alone to come legally, it's a process that takes years and years, we usually think it's just like asking for a passport but is not like that at all, some processes take 15 - 18 years believe it or not.
Many many immigrants I've known are working and paying taxes and contribuiting to the social security system with no hope of ever receive any benefit because they don't have a way to become legal, so where that money goes? One of my best friends (colombian) worked for more than 20 years, paid taxes (the IRS gives a special number to those people so they can pay taxes and they do it because if someday they can legalize their status, the INS asks for income taxes) and she finally decided to return to her country, no retirement no nothing. Don't believe every single illegal immigrant takes from the goverment and gives nothing, for all I know it's not true. Those working at stablished companies have to pay taxes as everybody else, the ones that don't are the ones working out of the books.

Have you ever thought about how many people are moving around the world? Immigration is strong everywhere, european countries have more immigrants now than ever before and for some reason I think this would be the way to make people to understand that WE ARE ONE, cultures will blend and so races, maybe after another century even languages won't be a barrier, we'll just speak some kind of mix and there wiil not be more separation, we will be so intertwined that it will be hard to determine enemies, how could we if we are just one big family?

We should be one big family...but not one big family of New World Order slaves. Most people came from somewhere else. We need to share the planet. The tax and monetary system is corrupt as hell...and that's pretty corrupt. Language, Religion, and Nationalism tends to divide us. We'll probably end up as citizens of Earth...speaking some kind of a common language. If we all have relatives living around the world...and intermarry with all races(even alien?!) we will probably be less likely to want war. Formal religion will probably be replaced by personal spirituality. The changes should be voluntary. The people(and aliens?) of the world should be responsibly free.

Remember how hard it was for you to learn how to speak and read and write English for the first time?

Perhaps it shouldn't be hard to imagine how difficult it is for a refugee/immigrant to do so.

You can't learn English in 3 days.

Hell, there are plenty of Americans who have a poor grasp of the English language. Isn't it ironic that the majority of these folks are concentrated in the poor, rural south? Isn't that where all the patriotic bravado comes from too?

Hi Humble Janitor,

Your comment just goes to show that the English language can be interpreted in so many different ways. I read my post again and can understand where you were coming from (unless I read something different in your post!).

I was actually trying to defend the immigrant and insinuating that it's the American people that need to learn another language so they can integrate with the visitors more easily.

The language I had more difficulty learning was of course English, I started to learn with the brain of a two year old (some say that I still do!!!). The process we go through at school is slow and also full of holes, otherwise everybody would speak correctly.

I learned my other languages as an adult, French, Portuguese, Spanish a little German, I even took Russian lessons when I was invited to go to Moscow in 1991.

I disagree that it's not easy to learn another language as an adult, the process of learning as an adult is a lot quicker as we learn using better logic and also because we don't need to learn the whole thing to communicate (I don't need to know all the rules of grammar to buy a cup of coffee in a snack bar) however, I do understand that we are all different and not everybody has the same education level, nor the same ability to assimilate new sounds - words are just sounds.

The point of my comment was that the writer of the song is historically incorrect and also comes across as being arrogant, because of this failure of understanding the past of their own country.

It's this type of person that would probably go to Mexico for their holidays and expect everybody to speak English!
