need help/advice on publishing work..

I'm looking for any advice on the best way to go about publishing my research. I have spent some time online looking but am having issues (and doubts) with the combination of; rights to my work, distribution, monetary rights, censorship, legal attacks by Gov. or power weilding companies... etc. I think you get the point. I find most sites offer some solutions but never all together. Any databases, Co.s, or personal stories/methodologies would be much appreiated as I am trying to do this while I still can.
