I recently saw the inside of a masonic hall - something I had never done before. The main room had a floor with alternating squares of black and white - like a chess board. Do you happen to know the significance of this pattern and why the masons would use it for their floor?

Its symbolic of walking the path of duality, and going beyond the poles. Its the same black and white pattern ,of the checkered flag at the speedway, given to the winner of the race.
