Millions of salmon vanish from Canadian river
Posted Fri Aug 14, 2009 2:01pm AEST
Updated Fri Aug 14, 2009 2:00pm AEST

Millions of sockeye salmon have disappeared mysteriously from a river on Canada's Pacific Coast that was once known as the world's most fertile spawning ground for sockeye.

Up to 10.6 million bright-red sockeye salmon were expected to return to spawn this summer on the Fraser River, which empties into the Pacific ocean near Vancouver, British Columbia. The latest estimates say fewer than one million have returned.

The Canadian Government has closed the river to commercial and recreational sockeye fishing for the third straight year, hitting the livelihood of nearby Indian reserves.

"It's quite the shocking drop," said Stan Proboszcz, fisheries biologist at the Watershed Watch Salmon Society. "No one's exactly sure what happened to these fish."

Salmon are born in fresh water before migrating to oceans to feed. They return as adults to the same rivers to spawn.

Several theories have been put forward to try to explain the sockeye's disappearance, including that climate change may have reduced food supply for salmon in the ocean, or that they may have been infected with sea lice en route to the Fraser River.

Another theory is that the rising temperature of the river may have weakened the fish.

The Canadian Government does not know what is killing the fish, but believes the sockeye are dying off in the ocean, not in fresh water, based on healthy out-migrations, said Jeff Grout, regional resource manager of salmon for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

It is too soon to know yet how widespread salmon losses are in the Pacific salmon fishery, but British Columbia's northern Skeena River has also seen lower-than-expected returns this year, Mr Grout said.

Signs are more positive for other salmon species such as chinook, pink and coho, he said.

The reduced salmon return affects the environment around the Fraser River, Mr Proboszcz said. After spawning, adult salmon die, creating a food source for bears and eagles and adding nutrients for plants.

Food companies that rely on the Fraser for some of their salmon supply will have to look to other areas of British Columbia or Alaska, Mr Grout said.

the world is indeed changing. mass extinctions happing right before our eyes..... this is but one example. as most of you already know..

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has requested public input on a draft recovery plan designed to restore and stabilize steelhead trout in coastal streams south of the Santa Maria River to the United States and Mexican border. This area contains a distinct population of steelhead that may have once numbered over 45 thousand but declined to less than 500 and became listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1997.

"This draft plan provides the framework necessary to recover one of the most endangered fisheries species in the United States, and in a region that contains over one-half the human population of California," said Chris Yates, NMFS Supervisor of Protected Resources in Southern California. "It is a challenge that can only be met through participation and collaboration with the public."

The development of a recovery plan is an important first step for the successful rebuilding of species identified as being at risk of extinction. Local knowledge and input from the public on threats or the unique needs of these fish is extremely valuable to ensure the plan is comprehensive and promotes local stakeholder involvement. Workshops planned in both Carlsbad and Santa Barbara, California will provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about the contents of the draft recovery plan and offer suggestions or public comment before a final recovery plan is completed. NMFS biologists will explain what steps they see as necessary to recover steelhead and to ultimately remove them from the ESA.

The first workshop will be held in Carlsbad, CA on 25 August, 1500 to 1700 HRS at the Carlsbad Fish and Wildlife Office, 6010 Hidden Valley Road. A second will be held on 1 September 1, 1700 to 1900 HRS at the Fess Parker’s Double Tree Resort, 633 East Cabrillo Boulevard in Santa Barbara.

Public comment and information relevant to this recovery plan must be received by no later than 1700 HRS on September 21, 2009. Email SteelheadPlan.swr@noaa.gov. Include in the subject line of the email the following: "Comments on Southern California Steelhead Plan." Copies of this draft plan will be provided on a compact disc upon request. Contact Kimberly Speech at 562-980-4006 or email her at Kimberly.Speech@noaa.gov with CD-ROM request for the "Southern California Steelhead Recovery Plan" in the subject line. Electronic copies of this plan are also available on-line at swr.nmfsh.noaa.gov/recovery/So_Cal.htm.

There's been talk of the need for a cooperative west coast effort. I followed the story up here, north. Some said predation by mackerel, new migration predation (giant squid are showing up near Vancouver), foreign-owned fish farms (Norway) and parasites, different salmon migration patterns, overfishing.

Here's a couple of articles:

An interesting factor in coastal areas is kelp. Kelp beds are overgrazed, and they're a spawning ground and haven for many little critters. It's not relevant for salmon, who spawn upstream in rivers, but it is for their fry and a lot of other species.

Here's some info about efforts to replant. Kelp is a very interesting plant: "Kelp beds are known as the rainforest of the ocean."

overfishing, volcanic activity making the water warmer, polluted water????Any of these or all of these. I was at a warehouse food chain over the weekend and they had red sockeye salmon, 3 small tins equal to 1 regular can $9.00 us dollars. I had to stop and do a double take .

This is a coded story.
Lets start with the date: 14/08/2009 OR (14+8) = 22 (9-2)=7. 22/7 =3.14 or PI
For a better understanding of PI please read here: http://www.projectavalon.net/forum/s...=13498&page=65

Subject is – ‘Missing’ Sock-Eye Salmon
Sock Eye = Sack Eye (Cover the eye)
Salmon = Solomon = SOLO MAN. COVER THE EYE OF MAN

Solomon “The Bible accredits Solomon as the builder of the first temple in Jerusalem, and portrays him as great in wisdom, wealth, and power, but ultimately as a king whose sin, including idolatry and turning away from God, leads to the kingdom being torn in two’

The Judgement of Solomon

As a side note – when you die (start your second birth) you will only be judged by 1 person and that will be yourself. You will not be able to lie to yourself when the time comes.

The salmon are bright red (Root Chakra) in their spawning phase but in there ocean phase are called Bluebacks (Throat Chakra)

"Salmon are born in fresh water before migrating to oceans to feed. They return as adults to the same rivers to spawn"
At this is the point they usually die, In the fresh water having completed their cycle.

However, in the above story: "dying off in the ocean, not in fresh water,"
They are now dying off in the salty seas by the millions. THIS IS WHERE THEY WANT US TO DIE. Trapped in the lowest levels of ourselves. Who lives in the ocean UNDER the sea??

We must all rise above these traps and reach the boat. Raise you energy. Raise yourself up above and out of the game. Out of the Matrix.

In that picture from the hands it looks like just another "Fishy Story" Obama is getting from Brown, but then all the media stories have something fishy about them. Seems like the media are all bottom dwellers, and would like to keep us there in the root chakra of survival and fear. Thank you iainl140285. Excellent decoding!

Yo, Yoda

I just realized that if the pink salmon didn't return to the Fraser R. this year, anything could have happened within the last 2 years. They're sexually mature and return from sea at 2 years. It could be part of a long, interesting time line. Other more northern runs are OK I hear.

dagon, thanks for posting this, by the way. At first, I just wanted to check up on the effect of fish farming on the salmon run (if any). I found all the other stuff along the way. {oops}

The local sightings of squid here -

Aug 21-09. The stranding of hundreds of giant squid on beaches near Tofino last week was the latest indication that warm-water species are pushing north on the Pacific Coast, perhaps as a result of global warming. The Humboldt squid, an estimated 300 to 500 of which swam ashore in the Long Beach area on the west coast of Vancouver Island, normally range from South America to California.

I see they invaded the California coast too -

Also, not sure if you caught this on on another post - the pacific garbage vortex capture project - interesting! -

Project Kaisei will examine the largest area of the Plastic Vortex, an ocean gyre, situated to the North East of Hawaii, and approximately five days by boat from the United States (San Francisco area). The expedition will consist of a large pass through the Plastic Vortex, with the aim to collect and study plastic and other debris forms from the ocean in order to showcase some of the new technologies that will be used for processing and recycling.

I'm throwing this in here. I saw it a few days ago. A squid's not an octopus, but I was thinking of the language of the west coast squid [Jumbo Squid Invade California Coast, Human-caused environmental changes are a boon for the "red devil."], i.e. 'dangers,' 'threats' in the deep sea, (un)consciousness etc

There were cutbacks to Fisheries in the 1990's, so it's hard to define the problem. Lots of theories the article says, like water temperature affecting food supply, new predators, lice from fish farms, or combinations...

No answers in B.C.'s sudden salmon collapse
Experts say cuts to research grants will make it difficult to determine why more than nine million sockeye won't return to the Fraser River this year
Last updated on Sunday, Sep. 06, 2009 07:02PM EDT
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...rticle1277846/

“From a government perspective, it comes down to cutting and gutting their science and assessment departments,” said Scott Hinch, whose research at the University of British Columbia focuses on salmon ecology.

“You could pick just about any aspect of the management cycle and the scientific assessment, and you can say, ‘Well, we used to do this but we don't any more.”'

This year was supposed to be a big one, with estimates predicting as many as 10.5 million fish would swim up the Fraser after spending two years in the open ocean. But those estimates have since been dramatically reduced, now putting this year's Fraser sockeye run at just 1.37 million — the lowest on record.

Fisheries Minister Gail Shea was unavailable for comment.

There is a salmon inquiry in Canada. I meant to post this a while back, but the announcement coincided with bears and eagles starving upstream on the Fraser - they rely on the salmon run for fall fattening up. The latter was kind of depressing to mention (BC: since 2008 nearly fifty-percent fewer bears than average, including 65% fewer cubs). I hope this inquiry goes straight to everything. Apparently oil tankers are on their way to BC too.

B.C. judge to head salmon inquiry

VANCOUVER — The federal government has given a B.C. Supreme Court judge unlimited power to find out why the Fraser River sockeye fishery collapsed.

Justice Bruce Cohen as been appointed to lead the judicial inquiry into the collapse of the fishery this year. He’ll be able to compel testimony and ultimately could make recommendations in the policies and procedures of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
