Default What the f*** Happened With My New Reply

I just finished a new reply on the Voynich Manuscript thread. The moment I post it, I get redirected to a page that tells me I'm not logged in, while I was, when I started to write.
I logged in again, but the 'new reply' I'd written has dissapeared, is unaccessable or whatever happened to it.
As I have no copy of the reply I've been sweating on, this means that an hours work has been flushed down the digital lue.
It is not the first time this has happened & before I throw my pc through the window out of pure frustration I thought of bringing this problem up.
Anybody???

Brook, I was curious if my 'Economist' link helped you in your quest for the origins of the VM. So I logged in & saw you'd find the article & a whole lot more.
Well done.
So I wrote a piece about Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page who has a big library with lost, secret or 'forbidden' manuscripts of alchemists etc.
In my enthousiasm it was a lot longer than I planned, but nevermind, it's for a good couse.
Meanwhile I actually have to work on a research thing I'm doing for a tv program & where I get paid for, if I beat the deadline.
Catching my drift?

Make sure you only access the forum using:

http://projectavalon.net/forum

Do not prefix it with www or you will get the error you described.

It's time for 'Weeds'

Meanwhile: CAN ANYBODY HELP US WITH THIS DISSAPPEARING 'NEW REPLY' PROBLEM????

Sorry Gareth, missed your post.

Anyway I already enter the forum the way you describe, so that is not the solution to my problem.

I have found that if I've been logged in for a long time...that my comments can be lost...as happened to you. Try logging out...and then logging back in...before you post...if you've been logged in for over an hour without posting. Don't blame the CIA, the NSA, or the Jesuits!

I just hit the back button and never lose my posts.

If you are sweating over a long one, always write it in Word or email or somewhere else besides here.

I'm having trouble with pages loading blank, when I do a PM to people and other times as well. Sometimes the videos on the pages load blank. What else - something else is happening - I can't remember.

Never, never, never count on a web-based site like this one to always hold a long sweaty post that takes hours to write. Sometimes I start here and go oops and at least copy it to another place periodically.

I never log in and out and in and out ...
I just turn off my modem at night, and turn it back on when I get on the computer again.

Or sometimes I will close out the Firefox window, if I'm not active on the forum.

If you will spend more than a couple minutes writing a reply, chances are you'll get logged off..... write your reply in a word processor or notepad, then copy & paste it into this message box....
Or highlight your reply here & right click to copy it before you post it (in case you get logged off)...
I know, it's really maddening to lose what you've written!

That's weird some people get logged off. I can stay on for hours - for days - and never get logged off. And I almost never intentionally log off either.

The back button trick doesn't work for me, Karen. And as you know my pc & me don't get along very well, so I panic quite fast. If I'm gonna write more than a few lines I copy & paste from now on. Should have thought of that myself. I'm also glad to see I'm not the only one who had this problem.

A long time forum addict, I can tell you the technical explanation for this: "Stuff Happens".

This isn't just a PA problem, of a vBulletin thing, and it has several causes.

Easiest one to fix: When you log in, there is a small check box (or should be) marked "Keep me logged in". Check this. No, it doesn't mean you are permanently logged in here, it just means your machine will store a cookie so that you are automagically logged in, and stay that way, whenever you come here. Harmless, but handy.

Barring that (or in addition) there is a button below the posting box marked "Preview Post". Clicking that from time to time will not only allow you to see what your post will look like, but help to keep you loggin in, as well.

Finally, hard knocks has taught me one other trick. Just before you click on "Submit Reply", right-click in the text box containing your post and select "Select All", Then r-click again and select "Copy". Then go click on "Submit Reply". That way, if your post should "lose its way" you will still have all your hard work sitting in your clippboard, and can re-open the "Reply" page and just click "Paste".

Never had a problem, but still 'sweat pieces' are prepared in word. (And then some people comment that you are doing copy-paste jobs..)

Thanx everybody for your help. Really comes in handy. You see, computers don't understand me, so if something goes wrong I have no idea what to tell them so they can fix it. Shouting, screaming & swearing has no effect, asking polite & say "please?!", same, same. Only threatning to send them to Africa where they will be taken apart & tortured, showed some effect once in a while. That also freaks me out, by the way. Could there be a ghost in my pc?

What's wrong about a copy & paste job?

Copy and paste "job" is an inference to plagiarism, mostly said by teachers to their wikipedi'ing students who don't rephrase their source.
