Default Transporting gold coins overseas

Greetings:

George Green mentioned having some gold coins ready to hop on a plane and go overseas. Is it even legal to do this? Don't you have to declare any amount over $10,000?

I have recently purchased a bunch of gold and silver coins, but I don't see myself being able to transport 80 1 oz gold coins overseas or 100 pounds worth of silver coins.

I'm trying to plan for the future. How do I go about tansporting my wealth overseas if I need to leave the country? I cashed out my IRA account, but have 60 days to resell 1/2 or more of the gold and silver I bought and put cash back into my IRA.

I'm trying to figure out the best plan for safeguarding my wealth and I think putting it all into gold and silver coins isn't practical and could be a very bad move if the value goes down and the economy/stock market stays stable and eventually starts moving back up.

Anyone have any ideas on the best plan of action for safeguarding wealth and being able to transfer it overseas? Can you trust a bank in Ecuador? How do you move gold and silver coins around? Thank you.

Hi dragondweller,

If you are not travelling alone, try dividing up the gold between the group until you pass by customs.

You don't need to take all the gold with you, enough, for example to tide you over for a few months to see how all this world fiasco plays out. Leave some hidden. Then you can always come back and take more.

Best regards,

Steve

I'm sorry Dragondweller but i have to ask WHAT you are safeguarding that wealth for??

To feed yourself and your extended family?? To help others around you? To secret away in the hope of becoming the next "bank" when the SHTF?

I am curious to know what your definition of "wealth" is?? After all you cant eat gold - nor can you snuggle up to it on a cold night when you feel all your worst nightmares are coming true. Yep you can trade with it - but hey gold is a very valuable thing - you gonna trade one bullion for a person's labour for 5 years??? Here we go again!! Back to a feudal system - then you also have to guarantee their safety while they DO work for you etc etc. I'm sorry i was hoping for something a little better out of all this failure and im hoping you are too.

I am aware that the mentality of save your own 'wealth" is an eye opener to even the most "unaware" person and if this at least makes them question what is happening then im all for it!! But once people see the writing on the wall maybe for the first time - its WHERE they choose to put their hearts that concerns me. Is it ALL self preservation or do they really see the need to really make a change for the sake of all humanity!!

Please think about your motives in advance.

Yes, I suppose my intentions are somewhat self-serving, but I also think that I can be more helpful to others if I can first help myself. I don't have a great deal of wealth, just an IRA of close to $100k that I was hoping not to lose, since I spent most of my young 35 year old life hoping to be able to retire or start a business some day.

I have no idea what the landscape of the financial world will be in the coming years. Will the dollar even exist? Will gold be confiscated, etc.? I'm trying to plan for the future and be able to have a good life and possibly share it with others, possibly relocating to a new safer country.

I saw some property for sale in Vilkabamba, Ecuador, but I don't have enough to purchase outright, and if I get some sort of mortgage, how will I pay it living out on a farm and no longer working as a software developer and having money coming in?

So, yes, considering it takes money to buy a plane ticket, grease palms, etc., I'm concerned about how to safeguard any wealth I currently have while I possibly move to a new country and hope for a decent life.

I don't think there's anything wrong with these types of concerns, unless you think it's more noble to toss my money in the river and give up hope and my will to live. It takes money to do things in our society whether we like it or not. Even this forum has a donation capability.

Hi dragondweller,

I'm assuming that you have all the documents necessary for your change.

How much are you wishing to invest in property, does it have tobe in Equador?

Are you easily adaptable to heat, humidity?

Are you easily adaptable to long hours in the field?

I thinkifyou are wanting to continue developing software, you can,as long as the internet exists. I know of many software developers who work from home, that don't even need to go to the office. So having a laptop and access to the internet would solve that problem.

If you are interested in going for a 'dry run' take a couple of weeks out on my small farm here in Brazil. I can't give you your plane fare, but a place to sleep and some plates of food I can arrange no probs. At least you will get to know what the climate would be more or less like and will have a chance to see if it will be your 'cup of tea'.

Best regards,

Steve

I hear what you are saying Dragondweller - and i feel for you - i have/had the same concerns myself. I can feel by your reply you are a genuine person - but perhaps running away and starting somewhere else is actually a disadvantage for you. Maybe better to stay with what you know and help out there when the time comes rather than be in a place you may have 'wealth" but no idea of how to integrate??

Just a suggestion - please dont take this as an accusation or advice - just something to ponder.

And no i dont think you should ever give up hope and your will to live - nor toss your money into the river - merely suggesting that money may not be the prerequisite to the hope and the will to live. But i also understand while the world currently works as it does money can be a way to "set yourself up" for the harder times ahead. I'm just hoping you are not going isolationist!!! lol

I'm sorry you had to bear the backlash of my views on a lot of people who seem to be squirming and trying to get as much non-existent "cash" out of a dying market without really seeing what is truly viable in a finite world!!! lol

My apologies to you - and i wish you all the best on your journey.

PS: grow your own food!!! lol good a place to start as any!!

Steve A:

Thanks so much for that offer. Perhaps I would be interested at venturing down and feeling things out for a week or two. Let me think about it. Thanks so much for the opportunity.

Believe me, if dragondweller lives in the U.S. his act of relocation is not "running away" and is perfectly understandable.

Hello everybody

First technical update about metals, we are again seeing a prolonged dollar strength which is causing gold to go below 740 0z and silver might deep even below 9 oz for sometime before it rebounds.

I have to say that You people living in USA and Canada are better off in some cases, first You can buy Silver without Tax where here in Europe we Have 20 % more to the spot prices, also the comissions now have increased so its a real harvest season for the companies selling silver, they earn a lot of money on poor people who are paying a lot more then they should for silver. Secondly if nothing really bad happens the silver should not get higher than 14 oz in the next 3 months so people have enogh time, to find Mints which sell silver at prices closer to spot

Best regards

1) Carry sales receipts for any that you take on your travels.
(Where you get your 'lost' receipts from is up to you)

2) Some countrys may not say anything when you Enter them BUT when you go to the airport to board your return flight, they may ask you why you did not declare the items when you Entered their country and thus give you a problem at the foreign xray/customs machines, etc. (They may then charge you to export the stuff). The official-looking receipts you took with you may help in this case.

3) Yes, divide the things between fellow travelers if you can.
4) The question never an answer found for is: How much is the gold, etc. valued at. $10000 max -- is it the face value on coins for example ($50 Eagles) or what? No one seems to have a definitive answer to this.

It is a Big hassle.

Oh, if you make jewelry (or similar) out of them, they may fall into a different category... to your advantage.

An alternative - use a non-usury based banking system/currency such as those in the Middle-East, Islamic regulated banks (
(banks that invest money, and do not loan money). They are far more stable (IMO).

Best stay home and not get so frightened about the sky falling. It is not going to fall. Relax and appreciate where you are, unless you live in a getto or possibly an overpopulated area.

Many States are still a good choice for now.

Well, I guess I'm just a little freaked out over the possibility of nuclear war. George Green mentions being south of the equator to avoid the radiation. So, it would be nice to have a place to go south of the equator before it's too late to hop on a plane. It would also be nice to be able to have spending money when I arrive.

I live in the Houston, TX area. I have no idea how safe this place will be in the years to come. It seems to be kind of a Rockefeller/Bush oil power hub, if you know what I mean. So, maybe it's safe and maybe it's not. I've only lived here for less than 2 years.

Just trying to plan for the future and have options. Are gold coins detected when you go through an airport metal detector? How do you even cash them in for some sort of local South American currency?

And George Green mentions all debt being eliminated. Does that mean I should rack up some credit card debt while I still can and buy more stuff of value?

Again, who knows what will happen and when. Everyone's got their opinions, I guess.

Oh, one more question. George Green mentioned the Gold Eagle is exempt under the Patriot Act in his Sep. 23 interview. What does that mean? I tried to do some research online about this statement, but couldn't come up with much. Does that mean they can be confiscated or they cannot be? I have no clue.

hello I just want to point out Ecuador pasted a new Constitution last week, A socialist agenda, land and wealth redistribution. They have used the dollar for years and are now going to print there own. They now have a agenda like Venezuela. One more thing about third world countries they will look at you as being rich. It's a changing world, you probably would not have the same rights as a resident ,corrupt officials etc. If the "shtf" it might not be the best place to be. just info. I have traveled alot and have exp. in a lot of 3rd world countries. Hope this may help
hope this helps

Hi Gregg,

I agree with you about travelling to developing countries.

Here in Brazil, for example, when I was a tourist, if I was a 'Gringo' I was automatically a rich man. But that is only true up to a point.

The touristy places are rife with poor people trying to hustle to make a living. Don't forget $5 to you or I may not be much, but to somebody who has $0 it can mean a lot of money. Consequently life has less value over here. You can hire a hitman for under $500.

But once you have your feet under the table, the people here accept you more for what you are and not necessarily how much you have. Of course that would still come into the equation now and then, but in general it's not much hassle.

That's why I offer people who are seriously considering getting down to South America to do a test first, so they can learn the ropes, learn how to blend in, be one of the boys, and of course the basics of the heat, sun, humidity, culture shock etc. which is also very important when making that decision to uproot and hightail out.

I neither want people to get into a tight spot going to the wrong place at the wrong time!

Best regards.

Steve

Be creative. Find out what regulations are for Equador and have someone ship smaller seperate heavily insurred cash/valuables envelopes to you personally by Fedex whenever you are in Equador.

Whenever I buy silver in the US, to avoid taxes in Netherlands, a relative sends me seperate letters by USPS. But I would not do this with Equador.

You could bury the gold in Equador once you settled. Better keep it close to you.
