View Full Version : Beijing reports mass bird deaths
21st January 2011, 11:11
A massive wild bird kill is reported from a Beijing suburb.
Dozens of dead blackbirds, mallards and magpies have been found along the banks of the Xiaojing River, according to the Huang’jiu Ribao newspaper.
A staff member of a centre for hygiene and epidemiological control does not rule out that the birds have died of starvation and unfavourable weather conditions.
Mass bird deaths for no obvious reason has been registered in Sweden, the United States, Italy and Canada since early this year.

Trapped in ice, 'thousands' of fish die in Detroit River
Residents in Riverside are concerned about what they say is a major fish kill in the Detroit River.
Andre Mailhot was out walking his Jack Russell terrier in Alexander Park - a municipal park that runs along Riverside Drive roughly between Strabane and George Avenues - on Tuesday when he saw "thousands and thousands" of dead fish floating in the water.
"I couldn't believe it. As far as I could see, I could see all those little white spots," Mailhot said. "They were just coming down the river like somebody threw them in the water."

Fish kill exposes marine park "sanctuary" myth
20 Jan 2011
By Mick Fletoridis
The cause of a large scale fish kill at Jervis Bay on the NSW South Coast, that appears to have originated from a sanctuary zone within the region's marine park, remains a mystery.
Local newspapers have stated the fish kill, that has affected a wide cross section of estuarine and reef species, including mullet, flathead, luderick, whiting, catfish, angel sharks, rock cod and more has been ongoing since early January. In that time holiday makers and local residents of Callala Bay, Hare Bay and Red Rock have been reporting seeing thousands of dead and dying fish on beaches and shallow water.
Experienced spear fisherman and angler, Oliver Wady, told Fishing World he'd never seen anything like it in many years diving and fishing the area. Wady says last week he witnessed large numbers of catfish freely swimming as he launched his boat at a popular Jervis Bay ramp. A few hours later the same fish were floating around dead or dying.
At the popular fishing and diving location of Long Nose reef within Jervis Bay "we saw good numbers of luderick, bream and tailor [upon proceeding to dive]...two hours later we saw fish starting to float," Wady said.
The fish kill is reportedly widespread throughout Jervis Bay with reports of dead fish spanning a distance of around five kilometres.
One Callala Bay resident had estimated between 3000 and 4000 fish of around 20 different species were dead between Callala Bay and just past Red Rock. One report had stated many of the dead fish were large breeding size flathead. See video outlining the extent of the fish kill below.

When birds fall from the sky and the animals are dying, a new tribe of people shall come unto the earth from many colors, classes, creeds, who by their actions and deeds shall make the earth green again. They will be known as the warriors of the Rainbow." ~Hopi prophecy

Twenty-four pilot whales have died on a remote beach in the far north of New Zealand, the Department of Conservation was quoted as saying on Friday by press reports. Fourteen of the whales were already dead when the group was found scattered over 150 metres of rocks, mud and mangrove early Friday in Parengarenga Harbour, 15 kilometres south of North Cape. They appeared to have become stranded the previous day. The department said the others had to be put down because they were in poor condition and chances of successfully refloating them in deteriorating weather were remote. "If we felt there was a real chance we could have successfully rescued them, we would have," the department's area manager Jonathan Maxwell was quoted as saying by the New Zealand Press Association. "Sadly, the current conditions were against these animals," Maxwell said. "The kindest thing was to end their suffering."
