****UPDATE*****: The information below is no longer accurate. Avalon uses now a simplified version of chat that is available here (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/index.php?id=chatphp) or by clicking the "Chat" button in the top navigation bar.

Project Avalon uses IRC (Internet Relay Chat) as its medium for the chatroom. This offers Avalon members and its guests a place to discuss relevant or irrelevant topics with other members in realtime and has the added benefit of taking small talk off the forum. We believe that will only enrich the contents of this forum in the long run as well as expand the Avalon community. It also provides a secure, offsite environment that is available when the forum occasionally is not.
* Bookmark the backup location: *********** (************)
IRC also allows for the registering of nicknames which is recommended for members and guests alike if they want to use the same nick whenever they join. The chatroom has been open since Sep. '09 and has seen hot debates on numerous issues, humorous discussions related to Avalon threads as well as personal conflicts and resolutions.
The interface at the forum (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/ezirc.php) will take you directly to the Project_Avalon channel however other channels may be created to expand the community.
The Interface is a third party module and the ads you see are not associated with Project Avalon or Project Camelot and no profit is made by any clicks by either Project.

What is IRC? :
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of real-time Internet text messaging (chat) or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message as well as chat and data transfers via Direct Client-to-Client.
As of May 2009, the top 100 IRC networks served more than half a million users at a time, with hundreds of thousands of channels (the vast majority of which stand mostly vacant), operating on a total of roughly 1,500 servers worldwide.

IRC was created by Jarkko Oikarinen in August 1988 to replace a program called MUT (MultiUser Talk) on a BBS called OuluBox in Finland. Oikarinen found inspiration in a chat system known as Bitnet Relay, which operated on the BITNET.

IRC was used to report on the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt throughout a media blackout. It was previously used in a similar fashion during the Gulf War. Logs of these and other events are kept in the ibiblio archive.

IRC client software is available for virtually every computer operating system that supports TCP/IP networking.

What are some basic Commands?:

/join
Type /join #channelname -- to join a channel of your choice
Example: /join #Project_Avalon

/me
The /me is an action message.
Type /me 'does anything'
Example: /me waves hello
What it looks like:
* bob waves hello

/nick
/nick changes your nickname
Example: type /nick newnickname (limit 11 characters)
What it looks like: I typed /nick bob-away
*** bob is now known as bob-away

/notice
A notice is used to send a short message to another person without opening up a private window.
Type /notice nickname (message)
Example: /notice bob-away are you back yet?
What it looks like:
-> -bob-away- are you back yet?

http://www.ircbeginner.com/ for much more info.

Nickname Registration:
/NickServ Register password your@email.address (your@email.addres)
example: /nickserv register mypass1234 bob27@coldmail.bla
Registers your nickname in the NickServ database. You will receive an email at the address you specified similar to this:

Hi,

You have requested to register the following nickname bob27.

Please type " /msg NickServ confirm f6EcuGoNx " to complete registration.

If you don't know why this mail is sent to you, please ignore it silently.

PLEASE DON'T REPLY TO THIS MAIL!
Paste the line in quotes into the chat window and your done. Once your nick is registered, you can use the SET and ACCESS commands to configure your nick's settings as you like them. Make sure you remember the password you use when registering - you'll need it to make changes to your nick later as well as to IDENTIFY to it when you log on.
(Note that case matters! Passw, PASSW, and passw are all different passwords!)

Identifying to Services:

When logging on you will need to prove you are the rightful owner of the name your using. this is done by typing:
/NickServ identify yourpassword

Other Services include:
ChanServ
MemoServ
HostServ
BotServ

- For more info type /NickServ Help or /ChanServ help etc..
- ALL commands are preceded by a forward slash /
What are those symbols next to peoples names?
Users and channels may have modes which are represented by single case-sensitive letters and are set using the mode command. User modes and channel modes are separate and can use the same letter to mean different things (e.g. usermode "i" is invisible mode whilst channelmode "i" is invite only.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat#Modes

~ = Channel Owner
& = Channel Administrator - Sets permanent bans and maintains access lists
@ = Channel OPerator - Can change channel modes and kick users out of the channel among other things.
% = Half OPerator - Can change channel modes and kick users out of the channel.
+ = Voiced - Can still send text to channel when channel is set to moderated. (#Project_Avalon is not set +m normally in which case + denotes a known member)

I was in the channel, but nobody was talking. What's up with that?
You joined during a time where people were not looking at the screen, try again, and give it a few minutes, allowing people to switch back to irc and see what is new and reply.

Funny eeh.......:eyebrows:

Every fridayevening, down here in Holland, I/we use this software in the chat of Argusoogradio (http://www.argusoogradio.org/)

Kerry Cassidy is doing her Whistleblower-radio (http://www.argusoogradio.org/category/argusoogradio/whistleblower-radio/) Dr. John Waterman is doing his Waterman-files. (http://www.argusoogradio.org/category/argusoogradio/the-waterman-files/)

I can tell you,.... there have been times I had to sit back on the bench because of belly-laughter-pain, a pain I like....... using this software

We have 3 new Mini Mods (they are called op's on irc) for our chat room.

Heretic
BrianEN
Digi

They are there to help anyone with questions about topics on the forum etc

It's a great place to keep the chit chat going..rather then clog up the threads.

Come by and say hi!

lbe well,
love

We presently do not have a chat facility in this forum.

This may change again in the future.

However the above thread applies to a facility that no longer exists as discussed above.

So I am closing this thread.
