Where is Mercury?

Mercury is supposed to be making a transit, according to official sites:

Transits of Objects through the LASCO/C3 field of view (FOV) in 2010
Jan01-Jan07 Mercury +3.1mag Left to Right
Mar07-Mar22 Mercury -1.8mag Right to Left
Apr23-May03 Mercury +4.0mag Left to Right

Yet it is NOT showing up on C3! Images from other transits show it present from the first day of transit to the last, even when at a lesser magnitude that the current passage.

There is a list of transits through the field of view (FOV) for LASCO/C3:

So the boys from GLP and ATS are looking it up and then go to SOHO, and WAAOO:

Reason: Mercury go turned into plasma by NEMESIS :mad2: , the fiery dragon :flame:

No, viking, seriously now: You have a point, it should have shown up. So why not?
You have to remember that the universe is 3D.
And specially you have to know that the orbital plane of Mercury is slightly tilted against Earths.
As the rotational periods are different , you will have scenarios where Mercury is in front of the sun, but just below/above the camera. Its there, but not in the FOV.
Look up 20100315 23:54. Its barely visible at the corner for some picures only.

So, sorry no catastrophe in sight, you still have to pay interest for the overdraft...

As you can see, Mercury is directly between us and the Sun right now.
It's likely hidden by the coronal blocker arm.
Wait a few days and it will be seen moving from the center of the screen outwards.

P.S. If is it IS gone, we will know shortly ;)

Thats also a possibility, but i think i am right.
If so, then during the next days Mercury might show up from the upper side, going right down in a slight angle.

But Yes Bashi and Richard it could be not quite in vision at the moment...a couple days we'll know...

If it doesn't show up perhaps Swanny's right!!!! ha ha
