Since September last year, Christchurch NZ has had around 4500 measured quakes.

Aftershock: A cloud of smaller Earthquakes around ruptured fault, releasing stress added by Earthquake.

Triggered shock: Stress added by initial Earthquake pushes a nearby, already stressed fault over the point of rupture.

An aftershock can overlap with triggered rupture on an already stressed fault.
