Can we please limit this discussion. I will point you other places for information. The first sighting of the "Smurf" phenomenon that I know of was at the Astrovera forum. DotA was one of them and used a smurf avatar. There are smurfs (supposedly angels) and then also their followers, the smurf servants, that they "recruit" from the forums. I've also heard a more official name may be "The Blue Team" They have gone on to try the same thing at other forums including Project Avalon. There is one over 70-page thread at the forum quoted below. Here is a quote from a thirty page thread: http://www.disclose.tv/forum/smurfs-go-underground-and-demand-full-mental-domination-t5598-30.html

The Smurfs are a group of people on the internet who have perpetrated a scam, cultlike inmaechanics on another group of people.
They tried to spread this message by planting seeds for the story here, but no one bought it, and they ran and hid..without answering any questions.

In short, they calim to be froma Star..starseeds..or aliends if you will..with different DNA, and a knack for wroking harmonics. [read the rest at the link].

[Note: I'm not going to be a mod here either - just helping out for a short time.]

I used to love the smurfs. Never saw the cartoon (thankfully?!) , but I remember when National garages gave them away with petrol in the UK. I had a couple, was envious of those who had more...

I hope they are not a representation from a higher order dimension...that would be a shame to 'ascend' and find yourself in smurfland

Smurfs (in DoTA/Gaming terms) Are referred to as people whom change their name's because they have a reputation or dont want their "stats" effected by the game they're going to play.

Smurfing means said player just changes his name, or uses a different account, and can jump into any game he pleases, and generaly stomps everyone there.

I suck at explaining, so basicly just people whom change their names/faces so they can go amongst the same crowd and be irritating?

I have heard of the term Smurf with regard to money laundering.

Basically, and to take an example. In the US there is a $10000 limit on bringing in cash into the country without declaring it. And so, what certain gangs do is recruit loads of people to carry say $9000 on them, so that they are under the limit. The people that carry these sums just under the limit are called Smurfs, apparently.

Known smurf who have been plaguing us recently on other forums

Michael/arcora at astrovera also known as Misty (he was inpersonating his wife), Rusty, asshat, Birdman, Juno and god knows who else. His very first post at Mists had to do with all of the clean sockpuppets he had and inviting others to use them. Then he got into a nasty exchange with Lost (Celine's friend) using his wife's avatar and identity. His identifying that he had many sockpuppets was in and of itself a tip-off of what to expect.

I would like to suggest to folks that when they see a fellow member drop off the radar sometimes it is a sockpuppet being outed. Sometimes a member can get away with multiple sockpuppots if all of the sock puppets were pleasant... but with smurfs the goal is to create dissention, confusion, irritation so as to split members emotionally where the members are being manipulated into taking sides. Only sometimes one never knows if one of the sides is also being fuled by that same member's other sockpuppet.

I actually knew this one person, 7 years back over at GLP, who had over 20-40 sockpuppets. Some of which were very sweet, others not so nice.

So just a word to the wise - BEWARE OF SMURFS and their smurf avatars as well... MUHAHAHAHA

If one never talks about the blue elephant in the living room one is never going to get it out of the house. Think of this as a public service announcement.

The most frustrating part about the whole thing is how they have manipulated, divided and play people against each other for fun. That is all I have left to add. And now I am done with this topic.

Ok, I'm not sure if you're talking about the animated blue guys with a leader that has the characteristics of Chairman Mao. I love the animated Smurfs but I'm not familiar with the internet version of them.
