Although the popular PC-based flight simulator program has been on the market now for a few years, it still remains a top seller and will soon be joined by Microsoft Flight.
For aviation enthusiasts, 3-D modellers and real pilots, the level of reality is impressive. Not only can you fly anything from a Piper Cub, seaplanes, jet fighters, helicopters to Concorde and the Space Shuttle (and even a large selection of sci-fi craft & flying saucers from free add-on websites such as the Jupiter II from Lost in Space, and Luke Skywalkers X-Fighter), the program allows for a host of modelling by the user: you can build aircraft, vehicles, spaceships, cars, boats, buildings and scenery. A plethora of add-ons are available for free or for a modest purchase price as payware from a host of third party vendors.

This demonstration video features a 3rd party payware aircraft (the Carenado Cessna 337 Skymaster, a unique CLT (Centre-Line Thrust) twin-engine arrangement: one engine at the front "pulling" and one in the rear, "pushing".) and enhanced scenery from the Australian manufacturer, ORBX). Don't get airsick!
One of the most interesting features of FSX though, is the ability to download real world weather on the fly, anywhere in the world, updated every 15 mins, more accurate than most weather forecasts.
Below is a freeware model of the Jupiter II from Lost in Space, complete with real digitised "flying saucer sounds" from the series, animated Robot, opening hatches, rotating reactor and retracting landing legs.
