Shrouded in mystery for centuries, the Sphinx of Giza has frustrated many who have attempted to discover its original purpose. Accounts exist of the Sphinx as an oracle, as a king’s burial chamber, and as a temple for initiation into the Hermetic Mysteries. Egyptologists have argued for decades about whether there are secret chambers underneath the Sphinx, why the head-to-body ratio is out of proportion, and whose face adorns it.

In The Sphinx Mystery, Robert Temple with his wife Olivia address the many mysteries of the Sphinx. He presents eyewitness accounts, published over a period of 281 years, of people who saw the secret chambers and even went inside them before they were sealed in 1926--accounts that had been forgotten until the author rediscovered them. He also describes his own exploration of a tunnel at the rear of the Sphinx, perhaps used for obtaining sacred divinatory dreams.

Robert Temple reveals that the Sphinx was originally a monumental Anubis, the Egyptian jackal god, and that its face is that of a Middle Kingdom Pharaoh, Amenemhet II, which was a later re-carving. In addition, he provides photographic evidence of ancient sluice gate traces to demonstrate that, during the Old Kingdom, the Sphinx as Anubis sat surrounded by a moat filled with water--called Jackal Lake in the ancient Pyramid Texts--where religious ceremonies were held. He also provides evidence that the exact size and position of the Sphinx were geometrically determined in relation to the pyramids of Cheops and Chephren and that it was part of a pharaonic resurrection cult.

just on a side note , did you know that the real great pyramid building finished with the end of the old kingdom , between 2686-2181 BCE 3rd dynasty to the 6 th , and the Egyptians were never able to replicate it , in other words at the end of 2181bc their was 150 to 200 years of plagues , famine and chaos and when they got back to some sort of order they couldn't remember how they were built.

Hmm, I'm not fully sold.

Firstly, the limestone used for the snout and ears wouldn't stand up to much punishment, so they must have only built it for the short term, this doesn't look like a short term monument.

Secondly, the idea is right, there is no way the current head was the original. It looks misshapen and badly sized compared to the body. So far I believe Graham Hancock and Robert Bauval have the best solution which states that it is older than the mainstream archaeologist's guess and it was a lion which pointed to the constellation Leo. Given the whole complex has many constellation aligned features this seems the Occam's razor answer.

Perhaps though he was right, maybe the masons were a tad naive to have undertaken the project given its structural flaws and that's why it was recarved after. Well, many have said 2012 will be the year of unveiling, perhaps we will find the truth soon and put an end to all the speculation, let's face it all we have is speculation.

I have never trusted dates given for the building of the pyramids though, also the assumption that they were were built as burial tombs seems like disinfo. Something in me keeps telling me that much of the mainstream archaeologist's information is very wrong and they know it was designed that way.

I think I'm going to give the book a read, thanks for the write-up. :)

here are some more images of the Sphinx

http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx171/naf09_2010/ancient%20monuments/4-15.jpg

the sphinx has been excavated from it's sandy hole many times

http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx171/naf09_2010/ancient%20monuments/6-70-1.jpg

here the valley temple has been excavated ,but the Sphinx temple to the right is still unknown

http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx171/naf09_2010/ancient%20monuments/4-13.jpg

notice the bottom of the headress without it's concrete add on

http://i753.photobucket.com/albums/xx171/naf09_2010/ancient%20monuments/6-14.jpg

here the water erosion is visible horizontally and vertically. Robert and Olivia propose that the vertical erosion took place ,when the Sphinx moot was being dredged of sand and the water would run back down the sides.
