The fight for control of the internet has moved into a higher gear, although it has only just begun and it is incumbent on everyone to push hard against this control. The fight is as much about money as it is about controlling content. Once the politicians get a small bit of control that will be expanded it to encompass much more than what is written into law. Amendments, riders and out and out deceit have always been the cornerstone of governments. I am not attempting to say everything is a conspiracy, it is simply how government works and how government fulfill their needs.

When you think about VAT in Europe or a sales tax in the USA, it seemed like a good idea at their inception. A sales tax or VAT of 2-3% did not seem too harsh and reasonable when they were proposed. These taxes certainly had their detractors at the time but not enough to stop them. Who would have thought that the average VAT rate in Europe would have increased to 20%. The lowest being 15% and the highest being 25% in most of the highly socialized countries like Scandinavia. The sales taxes in the United States range anywhere from about 6% to 12% a far cry from where they started off. The point being that once you get used to the "tax" or the "legislation" the politicians can then turn around and start to increase and manipulate the type of tax or the amount of the tax.

(Wish I had a different example but this is the one that comes to mind the quickest)
Some organization understand this from the onset, the most striking one being the NRA (National Rifle Association), they oppose any type of legislation limiting weapons, ammunition or any control of matters to do with guns. If you speak with them they are not opposed to restricting "cop killer bullets" but they understand that once legislation is passed it will change and morph something very different, so there is answer to say NO to everything!
For the sake of disclosure, I am NOT a member of the NRA, do not own a gun, never have and never will. If someone wants to own a gun it is their own business as far as I am concerned.

My point is that an almost radical, firm, fierce stance must be taken if we are to fend off the government from grabbing control of the internet. A flat out NO must be said by everyone in unison. The politicians will attempt to find a way to make us all believe that the control they want to put in place will be good for everyone, something along the lines, if you "the public" agree to this we can cut child pornography by 90%, or we can increase organ donations by 80%, it will seem almost too good to be true. That is when we will be at our most vulnerable and that is when we must all scream the loudest. NO CONTROL....NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES!!!

Keep in mind that once they have their foot in the door it will be swung open wide within a very short period of time!
