I just watched 2 hours of a PBS (2 part) show about Dick Proenneke.
"One man's Wilderness" - first published in 1973, by Sam Keith.

"Thousands have had such dreams, but Dick Proenneke lived them. He found a place, built a cabin, and stayed to become part of the country."

He moved to Alaska when he was 52, with nothing more than a saw, an ax, and a will to survive and conquer the land. He lived there for 30 years, (1968 to 1998), left when he was 80, and died when he was 87. This is the ULTIMATE Prepper documentary.
Totally mesmerizing..

Do google him, and discover the true spirit, and intellect, of SURVIVAL

Interestingly enough, since abandoning his life in the Alaska wilderness, the state has taken over his homestead and turned it into a sort of MUSEUM...
I can only dream that I could leave behind such "Leftovers" for future folks to visit.....

Check out the "Hand-Carved" hinges on his "Dutch Door".. simply fascinating.
He even made an indoor lock mechanism for his front door, completely carved out of spruce.

I tried to make a cabin once, in my naive youth... it didn't get 2 feet off the ground. I intend to get the original video.. just because..

Hi SEAM - great documentary - thanks for posting. This has been a dream of mine since childhood though I am not sure I could handle the loneliness - I enjoy the company of humans much more now than I did back then! Would also miss my computer! Wonderful watching someone else do it though and love the craftmanship. Must look out for the book.
