The Necronomicon is a fictional book from the stories of horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was first mentioned in Lovecraft's 1924 short story "The Hound", written in 1922, though its purported author, the "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, had been quoted a year earlier in Lovecraft's "The Nameless City".Among other things, the work contains an account of the Old Ones, their history, and the means for summoning them. Other authors such as August Derleth and Clark Ashton Smith also cited it in their works; Lovecraft approved, believing such common allusions built up "a background of evil verisimilitude." Many readers have believed it to be a real work, with booksellers and librarians receiving many requests for it; pranksters have listed it in rare book catalogues, and a student smuggled a card for it into the Yale University Library's card catalog. This a three film adoptation that is the mythos of HP Lovecraft ,

Speaking of Lovecraft, I am curious about his 'Deep ones'. They fit very well with ancient tales of amphibious reptilian gods (e.g. summerian tales).
I can imagine him channelling that data through his mind full of fantasy and fears, and writing about it.

Robert E. Howard wrote the Conan stories because a spirit appeared to him and told him that he was to write these stories, and for the next number of nights, the spirit would appear to him, dictate, and Robert E. Howard would write.

Channeling much?

Besides, I've always though Conan's "universe" is extraordinarily riveting and rings true of a society before the ancient Sumerian one which is the start of our history.

Also, Howard wrote Kull - King of Atlantis - and his mortal enemies were a shape shifting race of Reptilians. Just saying.

howard's 'universe' is directly tied to lovecrofts. he actually wrote some 'official' cthulu mythos works, like 'nameless cults', and many conan stories, espeacialy the shorter ones, make mention of the elder gods and such.

'tower of the elephant' features an ancient green skinned elephant headed alien who travelled to earth from his planet on the other side of the glaxy, with many of his kind, after losing a war.

Ye first sign is that of Voor and in nature it be ye true symbol of ye Old Ones. Make ye thus whenever thou wouldst supplicate Those that ever waite beyond the Threshold.

Ye second sign is that of Kish and it breaketh down all barriers and openeth ye portals of ye Ultimate Planes.

In ye third place goeth ye Great Sign of Koth which sealeth ye Gates and guardeth ye pathways.

Ye forth sign is that of ye Elder Gods. It protecteth those who would evoke ye powers by night, and banish ye forces of menace and antagonism.
