I think it is a good sign of a possible future world in which higher education will be offered to anyone in the world who can get access to the internet. From what i am able to understand there are many free online course with open enrollment to anyone in the world, taught by some of the most respected universities in the U.S.

I can't find any of the courses that have a begin date yet either, so I think they aren't quite ready to make that "my account" button ready to accept you yet. If they can make this work, it will be a huge benefit. Access to this level of study for free is a real step forward. Now if I could only remember what a quadratic equation was.....

So are they giving credits that you can put towards a degree? they will hold a transcript of your participation?

They are mostly post graduate or interest studies. It depends on you if you want to apply it to your current job or learn as a hobby. But I do not think, you can use these course for academic background. It does not help you to step up at the food chain.

I wouldn't hire you because of your completion one of these courses. But it would help me understand your interests.

I stumbled upon another side of youtube a couple of months back which seems to be kept fairly quiet (funny that).

http://www.youtube.com/education

There are hundreds of hours of lectures from many 'highly decorated' institutions, in all manner of subjects.

There are no certificates involved but it's definitely interesting.

Regards,

Pop.

From what I gathered it appears there is no credit given, but if you do pass the class you get some type of certificate heres a link to the FAQ page
https://www.edx.org/faq

Interesting this is turning into a discussion other than free education to anyone in the world for free, and its not just some random video to watch, there is lectures on video, online books, with free access to these books, quizzes, tests, papers, projects, peer collaboration, the course is meant to have the same rigor as the traditional in class setting, and these classes bieng offered are just the beggining, it appears many other top universities are joining or plan to join. And the program in a few years might become very popular and offer a variety of classes

Imagine someone in a poor country where going to university if they even have one, is meant only for the elite. I can think of someone in say Afghanistan, North Korea, Somalia, etc, etc. They wouldnt necessarily want the credit they would simply want the education, right now there is a few classes from Harvard bieng offered that have meaning world wide take for example "One of the greatest challenges of our time is to address global environmental changes, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, that may harm the health of billions of people worldwide. This class will examine these changes, their causes, as well as their health consequences, and engage students in thinking about their solutions. Those who earn a passing grade will get a certificate of mastery from HarvardX"

Well, in sumary I think this is quite a great idea and a platform for a greater world and future, I hope it succeedes and flourishes, if anyone does register and take a class I hope they would post how it goes. As for the other discussion can we call in some tpe of psychic ghostbusters to the thread, perhaps were bieng attacked,,,,haha, just kidding...to soon??

This will be fun! I signed up for two courses. Introduction to Biology The Secret of Life and Human Health and Global Environmental Change. It doesn't matter if we get credit or not. It has been a while since I have taken classes and I just may learn something new!

Human Health and Global Change starts Spring 2013
Introduction to Biology starts March 5th.

Thank you for sharing this!

Thanks! Free education. Awesome! I can see a couple of courses that I would like to take.
Soulsinger, thank you also.

All I have to do is figure out how to restructure my time, lol. Maybe I'll cut back on my work hours

So are they giving credits that you can put towards a degree? they will hold a transcript of your participation?

I am too old to worry about a degree so if I take any of these courses it will only be to satisfy myself. If I was looking solely to obtain credits towards a degree, then the value may be diminished.

Another piece of paper saying that I completed something will make it worth it to me especially if I am into the subject matter.

I split off 12 posts from this thread into a separate thread: Split thread from "MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Free online classes for everyone" (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?55313-Split-thread-from-MIT-Harvard-Berkeley-Free-online-classes-for-everyone). Carmody and I managed to provoke a contentious discussion that was off topic and distracting to the good topic of this thread.
