THE United Nations was set today to appoint an obscure Malaysian astrophysicist to act as Earths first contact for any aliens that may come visiting.
Mazlan Othman, the head of the UN's little-known Office for Outer Space Affairs (Unoosa), is to describe her potential new role next week at a scientific conference at the Royal Society’s Kavli conference centre in Buckinghamshire.
She is scheduled to tell delegates that the recent discovery of hundreds of planets around other stars has made the detection of extraterrestrial life more likely than ever before - and that means the UN must be ready to coordinate humanity’s response to any “first contact”.

Like I (and many others) thought before: disclosure is not an event but a process.
It looks like it's done in little baby steps ... till one day the masses realizes that the world has changed without significant event ...
To introduce the fist extra terrestrial however would be significant ... I wouldn't be surprised if they will bring it as if THEY found him/her themselves on
another planetary body ...
To be continued I guess ...

You bet! Also the ones to "find" ET are going to be definitely Americans

Now he would say that...
he suggests, even if we do encounter aliens in the flesh, they are more likely to be microbes than anything intelligent.

I would think because 'aliens' are an "obscure possibility"...in regards to the mainstream coverup...they ain't gonna tell us much apart from possible microbes.

Cloud9 by obscur maybe they mean that they aren't busy having their own TV shows and writing best selling books or traveling the lecture circuit. Either way it is a step in the right direction. I would love to read a short biography on this woman.

I'm afraid this is typical tabloid journalism i.e. make it up.
excerpt from the Guardian
The Royal Society knew nothing about it. The United Nations referred all queries to the switchboard of Unoosa in Vienna. Its switchboard number wasn't much help. "The person at extension 4951 is unavailable, please leave your message after the tone," it said. Those messages might make for some interesting listening today.
Finally an email from Othman herself would have prompted our Martian to trudge back to his spaceship. "It sounds really cool but I have to deny it," she said of the story. She will be attending a conference next week, but she'll be talking about how the world deals with "near-Earth objects".
Our alien will just have to try someone else, or stop reading the Sunday Times.
