'Stand-alone' Star Wars planned

The latest Star Wars film is to be made in the UK, producer Lucas film has said.

The seventh movie in the sci-fi series is due to start production next year and is
scheduled for release in 2015.Filming on previous Star Wars also took place in
Britain at studios including Elstree, Shepperton and Leavesden.Chancellor George
Osborne met executives from Disney-owned Lucasfilm in London earlier this year to
discuss the plans and the production is thought to be eligible for a tax break.

In a statement, Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, said: "We've devoted
serioustime and attention to revisiting the origins of Star Wars as inspiration for our
process on the new movie, and I'm thrilled that returning to the UK for production
and utilising the incredible talent there can be a part of that."

The company said representatives from Lucasfilm met with Mr Osborne "to
establish an agreement to produce Star Wars in the UK".
Mr Osborne said: "Today's announcement that the next Star Wars film will be shot
and produced in the UK is great news for fans and our creative industries, and it is
clear evidence that our incentives are attracting the largest studios back to the UK.

Actor Warwick Davis: "It's Star Wars coming back to its roots"

"I am personally committed to seeing more great films and television made in Britain."

Warwick Davis, who played an Ewok in 1983's Return of the Jedi, said the
announcement was great for the British film industry, and for British actors.

"I think that it's Star Wars coming back to its roots, it's where it started all those
years ago in 1976," he said.

"It's really where Star Wars was kind of born I suppose, and it's nice that it's
coming back."

In recent years hundreds of films have benefitted from tax relief, which require that
at least 25% of the total production expenditure takes place in the UK.Relief can be
claimed on production expenditure in the UK, up to a maximum of 80% of the total
budget.Pinewood and Ealing studios were also used for production of previous Star
Wars films.

The 1977 original, the Empire Strikes Back in 1980 and Return of the Jedi in 1983
were shot at UK studios, as well as on location across the world. The series was
revived in 1999 for three prequels. Studio production on the Phantom Menace took
place at Leavesden studios in Hertfordshire, with Attack of the Clones and Revenge
of the Sith filmed in both the UK and Australia.Lucasfilm has not confirmed where
the new film would be made but Star Wars fans website Jedinews has speculated
that Pinewood studios may be one of the sites. Earlier this month, the Sun
newspaper also reported that scenes would be shot in the Highlands and the Isle of Skye.

Films built around existing characters from the Star Wars universe are being

"We are working on a few stand-alone films... derived from great Star Wars
characters," Disney CEO Bob Iger told the CNBC channel on Tuesday.

The films, written by Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg, will be released
between 2015 and 2021, he continued.

The seventh Star Wars film, directed by JJ Abrams, is due out in 2015.

JJ Abrams: Star Wars a 'once in a lifetime opportunity'Abrams on his approach to
the new Trek film

Film-maker JJ Abrams has said the offer to direct the upcoming new Star Wars
movie was a "once in a lifetime opportunity" he could not resist. But the Star Trek
director admitted he "absolutely" worries about being seen as a man who "reboots"
franchises."It was one of the main reasons I initially said no to Star Wars," he told
the BBC's Will Gompertz. "I thought, 'I can't be that guy.'"

Abrams' latest film, Star Trek Into Darkness, is released on 9 May.

He was also in charge of the previous Trek instalment in 2009.

Before directing Mission: Impossible III in 2006, Abrams wrote and produced such
hit TV shows as Alias and Lost.In 2011 he directed Super 8, a sci-fi fantasy thriller
that he co-produced with Steven Spielberg.Abrams, who is in Britain to promote
Star Trek Into Darkness, said he had planned to follow it with something in a more
modest vein.

"There's a story that we are working on that's a small comedy drama, that I
assumed would be the next movie I was going to direct.

"And then Star Wars came along. It was one of those things where Star Wars felt
like one of those once in a lifetime opportunities that forced me to stop and
reconsider whatever the rulebook was."

The director said he does not have a strategy about which films to take on,
responding instead to projects that "feel - in my gut - like something special".
But the 46-year-old admitted he is aware of the dangers of becoming too
associated with big film franchises.

"I do feel at a certain point, if I take on one more, it's over," he said. "I already felt
that way with Mission: Impossible, then with Star Trek."

Abrams, who also worked on the script for 1998 film Armageddon, said that if he
had to choose whether to work on TV or film, he would pick the former
because "there are more risks being taken".Television, he continued,
presents "opportunities for nuance and scenes that in a film would never make the
final cut, because there's no room".

Star Wars 'geek'

"If you look at actors on TV today it's insane how good the performances are," he
went on. "Some of the best writing I've seen exists in television.

"So for me, the stuff I've been most excited about recently has been coming from
television, both in the UK and the States.

"But it's a close one because movies were always - for me as a kid - the thing.

"I am hoping studios will begin to see what's happening in TV, take advantage of
that technology, and make more films that are not based on pre-existing
franchises."

JJ Abrams with members of the Star Trek cast Abrams, pictured with members of
the Star Trek cast, said he hoped to make "authentic" films
A self-confessed Star Wars fan, Abrams said he would have to try to mitigate
his "geeky fan-boy" feelings about his forthcoming project.

"It's just about about approaching it from as authentic a place as possible, and not
trying to apply what you believe or think, as much as trying to filter everything and
get at it from the core of the characters.

"[It should be] what you deeply want to see, never what you assume the fans
might like."Despite working on Star Trek and Star Wars concurrently, Abrams said
he was not concerned that the two films might have a similar feel.

"To me they are such wildly disparate universes - the back story, the tone, the
mood, certainly the history [and] the characters - that I'm in no way worried."

Star Trek Into Darkness has its UK premiere in central London on 2 May.

As a Star Trek fan from the original thru to Enterprise I thought setting the remake of the original
film poss TV spin off in a parallel universe not a bad idea. It was certainly better than Star Trek
The Motion Picture and I enjoyed some of the casting especially Mc Coy, Scotty ,Sulu , also
Spock & Uhura relationship is promising. Still not sure about Kirk but hopefully he will grow
as time goes on.

As for Star Wars he cannot do much worse then the last trilogy although they were fun to watch...
Except maybe JA Ja and the Gungan chieften LOL..

I liked the new star trek' movies. They connect time lines for space future and allow creative thought to soar as well as logic and courage and bravery to do good. The three minute trailor was good and always catches my husband and my eye when showing. WE are long on patience "TREKKIES."

I remember seeing the first star wars when I was young boy, my mother let me skip school and I made the first showing in my small town, I was first to enter and sat in the front row... It was the begining of my love for space , and justice, and teamwork, I lost count of how many times I've seen it , last I remember was 89 times ... something inside me , told me this was more than a film, that there was some basis of history behind it all ... may the force be with you all , always ...

As the dying AR Deathship struck the planet, the ship of Lord AR-ZU was enveloped in blinding light.

In moments, the shock wave struck the ship, bouncing it around as if it were a leaf caught up in a tidal wave. Tumbling and twisting, the ship of Lord AR-ZU was thrown in the direction of TARGALLU(Saturn), narrowly missing the stone rings.
