The recent discovery of Gliese 581g, an alien planet in the habitable zone of another star, has been an exciting development for scientists probing the galaxy for signs of extraterrestrial life. At least one claim of a possible signal from the planet has already surfaced – and been met with harsh skepticism among the science community.

"Whenever there's a clear night, I go up to the observatory and do a run on some of the celestial objects," Bhathal told the Daily Mail. "Looking at one of these objects, we found this signal. We found this very sharp signal, sort of a laser lookalike thing which is the sort of thing we're looking for – a very sharp spike. And that is what we found."

This is certainly very interesting, but I can't help but be sceptical considering it was allowed to 'slip the net', so to speak.

I've read that it's a hoax.

It would be awesome though if it were real.

I remember few years ago watching a documentary on galaxies in space and they said that in this galaxy they found a planet just like earth and called it Stargazer + some number or something like that i think ???
Not sure if i remember correctly on the name but it was few years ago and there was the claim about this planet ....

It is worth remembering that it was only as recent as 1991 that the first planet outside of our own solar system was discovered. Since then nearly 500 have been found and the real likelihood is that we will find many many thousands before too long.

In my opinion it is just a matter of time before we find a dozen earthlike planets, just the right distance away from their own suns to be able to sustain life (or at least life as we know it).

What about the Cassini Project and the transmission from Saturn

From what I've understood ( I'd have to dig out related articles ..) it's not a hoax,

the astronomer is genuine and the signal was detected by him and reported to the wider SETI community ,
yet, as no other telescope was able to confirm the same signal at that time ,

no one has payed attention . In the article it sais that Drake has asked for details but they were not sent to him.

It's probably a story with few unconfirmed details and sides to it as we all know that the academic community is not always a synonyme of honesty and scientific enthusiasm though that's what is expected ..
