RECALL WARNING

Besides the recent recalls of ground meats contaminated (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2014/05/23/beef-recall-stores-usda/9480431/) with E. Coli (the ugly type) (note 1 below), now Sprouts have been contaminated with E. Coli - ref: http://heavy.com/health/2014/05/e-coli-bacteria-outbreak-sprouts-food-safety-warning/

"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have confirmed cases of E.coli infection in Idaho and Washington State. At least 10 people have been affected, and the CDC and Food and Drug Administration are currently investigating the outbreak. (E.coli is short for escherichia coli, a large group of bacteria). " This recent E. coli outbreak is linked to raw clover sprouts grown and sold by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts of Idaho. The owner of the produce company, however, still says his sprouts are bacteria-free. Evergreen also had a Salmonella incident in 2011 with their alfafa and spicy sprouts.

Now Walnuts, and Humus are being recalled from discount outlets due to dangerous Listeria contamination.

RECALL ALERT: Hummus sold at +Target and Trader Joe's may contain listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious infections.

more: http://www.newsday.com/business/hummus-sold-in-target-trader-joe-s-recalled-over-possible-listeria-1.8160717

Two U.S. food companies this week issued voluntary recalls of walnuts and hummus dips sold at major retailers after listeria was detected in a sampling of the products, the Food and Drug Administration said on Thursday.

The recalls come weeks after Wal-Mart settled lawsuits with the families of 23 people who died from a 2011 listeria outbreak linked to cantaloupe grown at a Colorado farm and sold by the retailer.

St. Louis-based Sherman Produce Co. said it would begin recalling 241 cases of bulk walnuts, after a recent routine sampling of the product purchased by stores in Missouri and Illinois revealed traces of listeria, the FDA said in a statement.

STORES:

Massachusetts prepared foods manufacturer Lansal Inc, commonly known as Hot Mama's Foods, said it would voluntarily pull hummus and dip products sold at Target, Trader Joe's and other retailers, the administration said.

Target Archer Farms - Texas Department of Health tested the humus positive for listeria

Listeria monocytogenes can lead to serious, even fatal, infections especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Infections can have particularly harmful effects for pregnant women, including miscarriage and stillbirths.

SYMPTOMS

ref: http://www.about-listeria.com/listeria_symptoms_risks/

On the mild end of the spectrum, listeriosis usually consists of the sudden onset of fever, chills, severe headache, vomiting, and other influenza-type symptoms.

Along these same lines, the CDC notes that infected individuals may develop fever, muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. When present, the diarrhea usually lasts 1-4 days (with 42 hours being average), with 12 bowel movements per day at its worst.

Most healthy adults and children who consume contaminated food experience only mild to moderate symptoms. The infection is usually self-limited, since, in healthy hosts, exposure to Listeria stimulates the production of tumour necrosis factor and other cytokines, which activate monocytes and macrophages to eradicate the organism.

Few people with normal immune function go on to have more severe, life-threatening forms of listeriosis, characterized by septic shock, meningitis and encephalitis. (which can lead to death).

Note 1) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escherichia_coli_O157:H7
Most illness has been through distribution of contaminated leaf green vegetables.
Symptoms- severe, acute hemorrhagic diarrhea (although nonhemorrhagic diarrhea is also possible) and abdominal cramps. Usually little or no fever is present, and the illness resolves in five to 10 days. It can also be asymptomatic. particularly children under five years of age and the elderly, the infection can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), in which the red blood cells are destroyed and the kidneys fail. About 2–7% of infections lead to this complication. In the United States, HUS is the principal cause of acute kidney failure in children, and most cases of HUS are caused by E. coli O157:H7

E. Coli O104:H4 the Next Strain to Watch

In May 2011, a virtually unknown strain of E. coli, known as O104:H4, made worldwide headlines when an outbreak in Germany sickened approximately 4,000 people and killed 50, including one American. This event, linked to fresh sprouts, quickly became the deadliest foodborne illness outbreak in history.

E. coli O104:H4 evolved from a type of E. coli known to be harmless enteroaggregative E. coli and had acquired the genes to produce Shiga toxin from more virulent strains known as enterohemorrhagic E. coli.

"Looking to the future, Manning said that her biggest concern lies in public health’s inability to predict the next unpredictable pathogen.

“From a public-health perspective, the emergence of new pathogens causes the biggest problems,” Manning said. “In these cases, we don’t know what we are looking for and don’t understand how they cause clinical symptoms, let alone how to treat them.”

I use MMS to pre-wash my vegetables for about five minutes and then soak them in water. Every three days, I use 3 drops of MMS, plus filtered water in a large spray bottle. The old batch is used to spray down sinks, butcher block and counter tops.

Looks like it's time to MMS my walnuts. Thanks, Bob.

MMS "The Miracle Mineral Solution" Household Uses
[complete article here (http://www.keavyscorner.com/Household-uses-MMS-Miracle-MIneral-s/2395.htm)]

MMS and Food Preparation

MMS is by far the best food treatment product available. Using MMS to help prepare your meals is a powerful way to improve the quality of your food at home.

Use a mild MMS and water solution as a rinse and scrub on vegetables before preparing them for salads or cooking. Add 10 to 15 drops of MMS to a gallon of rinse water to rinse leafy greens, brush off mushrooms, or clean any other produce you prepare.

For poultry, fish, beef, and other meats, use MMS as a safeguard against pathogens hiding in the meat. MMS can be used as either a scrub or a soak to help keep your meat products safe to eat.

As a scrub, activate 5-10 drops of MMS and add to a half cup of water. Use this solution to rub firmly on the surface of a fish filet, chicken breast, steak, or other meat item. Allow the solution to stay on the surface of the meat for a few minutes, then rinse off thoroughly.

As a soak, activate 5-15 drops of MMS and add to enough water to cover your meat items in a dish or a pan. Submerge your meat items in the MMS soak solution for several minutes as you prepare other items in the meal or preheat the oven. When you are ready to use the meat, rinse it off thoroughly and drain the rinse solution.

Earlier this year, Hundreds of people in Japan have been sickened by food contaminated with the pesticide malathion. Reports on the number of victims differ from at least 890 to more than 1,000.

The mass poisoning has been traced to Maruha Nichiro Holdings, which is recalling about 6.4 million bags of frozen foods, including croquettes, frozen pizza and chicken nuggets, after 2.6 million times the permitted levels of pesticide were found in the products. While 1.2 million packages have been recovered, another 5.2 million are still unaccounted for.

As to E. Coli in Japan - http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2012/08/e-coli-in-pickled-cabbage-kills-7-in-japan/

Six elderly women and a 4-year-old girl were killed earlier this month when a cabbage they consumed was contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. More than 100 were sickened in the Hokkaido area outbreak.

The Japan Times said it was the worst food poisoning outbreak to be experienced on island nation in a decade.

The women who died were residents of nursing homes in Sapporo and Ebetsu that served the bad cabbages. The girl died Aug 11, also in Sapporo. All who were sickened and died apparently ate a lightly pickled Chinese cabbage produced by a local company.

One of the elderly women ate the pickled product at her nursing home on Aug. 1 and died Aug. 18 from multiple organ failure after nine days in the hospital.

The young girl from Sapporo died five days after developing E. coli symptoms. Her family bought the pickled cabbage at a local supermarket.

Health officials told the newspaper they do not know how the bacteria got mixed with the pickled cabbage.

In 2002, Japan saw the deaths of nine people with E. coli infections from eating marinade chicken at a hospital and its nursing home annex at Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture.

Contaminated food can happen anywhere - we assume our trusted resellers of farm produce have taken the proper precautions, inspected the products for wholesome quality, non-contamination, but it happens.. Wash the foods properly, especially greens.. With the contaminated meats, that happens generally at the manufacturer, producer..

Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli O104:H4 - treatment

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3370534/

The emergent E. Coli bacteria that appeared out of nowhere.. ?

http://sciences.blogs.liberation.fr/.a/6a00e5500b4a64883301538f3bcfba970b-pi

In 2011, Germany experienced the largest outbreak with a Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strain ever recorded. A series of environmental and trace-back and trace-forward investigations linked sprout consumption with the disease, but fecal-oral transmission was also documented.

" From an unknown source, the epidemic strains acquired a lambdoid prophage carrying the gene for the Shiga toxin."

What makes it dangerous -

Shiga toxin is released by decaying bacteria in the gut, migrates through the intestinal barrier, and is transported via the blood to target organs, like the kidney.

"First described in 1983 as “hamburger disease” for its association with beef consumption in fast food chains, it was later associated with epidemics linked to such diverse food items as apple juice and spinach leaves. Now, the Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) serotype O104:H4 holds public attention, while microbiological detective work traced the German outbreak back to sprout consumption."

"Human-to-human transmission is known to occur in about 20% of households with an O157:H7 primary patient."

Treatments

"For EHEC O157:H7 strains, the primary reservoir is the intestines of ruminants, particularly cattle. No O104:H4 strains were detected in cattle feces.

The use of antibiotics for the management of human O157:H7 infection is controversial.

Type 2 Shiga toxin gene was enhanced by quinolones. Such causes release of large amounts of the toxin into the bloodstream.

Notably, the epidemic O104:H4 strains were resistant to all penicillins and cephalosporins while they were still susceptible to carbapenems.

During the epidemic, the German Society of Infection (DGI) recommended the use of carbapenem if one suspects invasive disease due to O104:H4. Rifampin was suggested for safe eradication of EHEC from the intestinal tract.

Treatment using Probiotics - When lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were cocultivated with O157:H7 in broth culture, the production of organic acids by LAB led to a decrease in both pH and stx2A gene expression. In addition, low pH blocks Stx prophage induction to almost zero. Mice inoculated with O157:H7 and Lactobacillus reuteri showed a decrease in intestinal pathogen count, weight gain, and less kidney damage than seen in infected controls.

Treatment with Phages.
A cocktail of three E. coli phages showed a dose-dependent lytic activity against O157:H7 contamination of various vegetables and meat products. Using a high phage dose, lysis rates in excess of 97% were achieved. The surviving cells did not develop phage resistance.

I purchased extra MMS in case the grid went down and/or prices sky rocketed.

I’ve saved the information and links for H2O2 - Hydrogen Peroxide. I’ll do a cost analysis between them when it’s time to reorder.

E.Coli now appearing in Atlanta

ATLANTA, May 23 (UPI) --Raw clover sprouts are the likely source of seven confirmed cases of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O121 (STEC O121) infections in Idaho and Washington, health officials say.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta said there are three other probable cases of STEC O121 infections linked to the same sprouts.

Preliminary trace back investigations indicate contaminated raw clover sprouts produced by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC, of Idaho is the likely source of this outbreak of STEC O121 infections, but the investigation is ongoing.

In state and local interviews of the patients, health officials found 9 of 10 reported eating raw clover sprouts in the week before becoming ill.

ref: Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, or STEC, frequently causes severe disease, including bloody diarrhea and hemolytic uremic syndrome. STEC bacteria are divided into serogroups O157 or O121.

E. coli O157 is the STEC serogroup found most commonly in U.S. patients, but other E. coli serogroups in the STEC group, including O121, are sometimes called "non-O157 STECs."

O157 is described in the posts above: #4 and #5

UPDATE - 7 Tons (14,000 pounds) now recalled of the tainted HUMUS/sprouts and dips sold at Trader Joes and Target Stores

Target last year sold tainted Cantaloupes which resulted in the death of multiple people.

A recall means take it back. Hopefully people will see the notice, and dispose of the potentially tainted food products.

Listeria monocytogenes, is a type of bacteria that causes listeriosis, a serious illness associated with infections of the central nervous system including meningoencephalitis, meningitis and brain abscess. Inhalation Listeriosis from breathing in moist air containing the bacteria can create severe pneumonia, and can spread through coughing or other nasal secretions. Listeria is known to breed in airconditioners, in cars, factories, homes, as well as of all places, in the windshield washer tank of one's auto.

All of the affected products have use-by dates not later than June 2014.

Lansal has already instructed affected retailers and distributors to remove the affected products. The FDA has likewise advised customers who have bought any of the potentially contaminated products to throw them out or they can return the products to where they have bought them to get a full refund.

Consumers who have questions about the recall are also advised to contact the number (877) 550-0694.

Food-borne contamination appears to be prevalent this month. Wolverine Packing Co. in Michigan has also earlier recalled some of its ground beef products for possible contamination of E.coli. A Red Robin employee in Missouri may have also exposed more than 5,000 customers to hepatitis A.

Be safe this holiday weekend :)

E. Coli alert had existed FRIDAY, the 23rd in Portland Oregon.

Is the upper northwest of the US experiencing E. Coli contamination ? With the outbreak as discussed in the OP Post #1, with Washington State, and Idaho (source of the contaminated sprouts), how can people take precautions? Is it the water supply being contaminated? Water used for irrigation of "crops" ?

This article from Friday points out the warning residents received from the board of Health

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2014/05/portland_issues_boil_water_not.html

Portland issues boil water notice for the entire city after E. coli detected in 3 tests

The Portland Water Bureau issued a city-wide boil notice on Friday morning after water staffers detected E. coli in three separate tests during the past three days.

The Oregon Health Authority required the city-wide notice, which also applies to Portland's whole-sale customers that also receive water from the Bull Run Watershed.

Routine inspections at two of the city's Mt. Tabor reservoirs produced the three positive E. coli tests. City employees performed the tests, according to Jaymee Cuti, bureau spokesperson.

State officials said the tests showed signs of fecal matter.

The boil notice applies to 670,000 customers, according to Cuti. Portland supplies drinking water to 935,000 customers in the metro region.

City officials hosted an emergency press conference at noon.

"While we believe at this time that the potential health risk is relatively small, we take any contamination seriously and are taking every precaution to protect public health," said Portland Water Bureau Administrator David Shaff in the release.

The Oregonian will be there and this story will continue to be updated.

Cuti said the boil notice will be in effect until the city produces "a clean sample."

Did you have any illness from drinking un-boiled water Thursday or Friday in Portland, Oregon?

They said, All Portland Water Bureau customers are affected. Also affected are customers of the following water providers:

Burlington Water District
City of Gresham (North of I-84)
Lake Grove Water District
Lorna Portland Water
Palatine Hill Water District
Rockwood Water District
Tigard Water Service Area (including Durham, King City and Bull Mountain)
Valley View Water District
West Slope Water District

On Saturday, they said ALL CLEAR.

Customers can visit http://www.portlandoregon.gov/water/boil/ to determine if their home or business is in the Boil Water Notice area.

The Boil Water Notice, fact sheets and contact information are provided on this same website.

For more information, affected customers should contact the Portland Water Bureau Customer Service at 503-823-7770.

ref: http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2014/05/portland_issues_boil_water_not.html

"As a precaution, the Portland Water Bureau will be draining and cleaning Reservoirs 1 and 5. An investigation into determining the source of contamination is ongoing."

Meaning they feel the contamination was coming from those two Reservoirs. (Above ground open reservoirs)

Here is a short video - about 5 min on testing for Salmonella and E. Coli.

If one's water is unsafe, even growing your own sprouts could be contaminated.

Quite possibly the MMS and Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) methods are the best. If you are on well water, if your well is ensured to be safe, and tested at least once a year.

And especially test it after severe flooding.

A clear test result and chances are the water would be bacteria free.

But, as folks have found, there is no guarantee tho that well water would not have heavy metals, or even Radon gas (radioactive). Good clean water is needed obviously, clean equipment when processing, and clean sanitary conditions when growing/harvesting pick and eat greens.

In Oregon they caught a kid urinating in the reservoir - who knows what else was tossed in there.. With the other outbreaks, contaminated cow manure was the source of the E. Coli infection. The oddity is when the non-so-much common E. Coli strains appear, which appear to be weaponized. That stuff, weaponized biological contamination appearing, in the common food processing centers makes me believe there is a saboteur(s) present, more so than a drug company trying to push profits up.

The E. Coli for instance mentioned above, appears to not be able to be treated by common anti-biotics; the closest thing that appeared to do something positive was PRO-BIOTICS (organic natural remedies)..

It's interesting with the well water - it is currently controlled about how many wells one can have, and the type of well, what it is used for (and there are some stupid things about folks not being allowed to have a rain barrel to capture run-off from your roof...) see this link about legality about capturing rain water on your own property.. http://www.righttothrive.org/2013/08/22/lets-talk-water-whats-legal-and-whats-not/

Another rainwater harvesting link here - legality by State:
http://www.enlight-inc.com/blog/?p=1036

The above link is somewhat vague in the full legal interpretation of capturing water for instance damming a ravine could theoretically "capture" or divert the natural flow of water, preventing others down hill from being able to acquire the water.. in other words do your own research in your own specific situation. There is mention that California has so many laws that the website author was not able to figure it out completely..

It is interesting the open air exposed reservoirs that are used in many places of the world. With all the strange contaminants in the air falling mixed in with "rain", getting clean safe water from the sky may not be really safe without proper treatment? Is distillation needed to treat such water?

http://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/drinking/private/rainwater-collection.html - from the CDC has some data on private rainfall water collection:

Germs and Other Contaminants
"While useful for many things, rainwater is not as pure as you might think, so you can’t assume it’s safe to drink. Rain can wash different types of contaminants into the water you collect (for example, bird poop on your roof could end up in your water barrel or tank). Rainwater can carry bacteria, parasites, viruses, and chemicals that could make you sick, and it has been linked to disease outbreaks.

"The risk of getting sick from rainwater may be different depending on your location, how frequently it rains, the season, and how you collect and store the rainwater.

"Dust, smoke, and soot from the air can be dissolved in rainwater before it lands on your roof. Roofing materials, gutters, piping, and storage materials can introduce harmful chemicals like asbestos, lead, and copper to the water, though building standards minimize some of this.

"Dirt and germs can be washed into collected rainwater from the roof, especially when rain follows several days of dry weather.

"Rain barrels, for example, do not provide any type of disinfection or filtration. Adding chlorine or iodine to water does not protect against chemicals, and some parasites are very chlorine tolerant. Boiling the water will kill germs but will not remove chemicals. "

CDC also mentions some States have issue against any person collecting water saying the "water belongs to the State" (hmmm...)

I make my own sauerkraut and other lacto-fermented veggies. I follow my intuition on when to use “Ultimate Flora”. It’s got 30 Billion live cultures per capsule. And 10 probiotic strains that’s delayed released.

It’s way easy to make the probiotic veggies and the beauty is that they store for months in the fridge. Post #3 (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?71696-Watch-the-organics-you-re-eating-Food-recall-in-effect-Caution&p=837603&viewfull=1#post837603) is the process I use to clean them.

NOTE: These veggies are pickled in a sea salt brine. It's not the process where you blanch and vacuum seal. Which is why they last in the fridge for several months rather than shelf them for much longer periods of time.

Here’s a photo from my first batches and a link to a 6 minute video (http://www.nourishingmeals.com/2012/02/how-to-make-lacto-fermented-vegetables.html) on how easy it is to make:

beet, carrot, red pepper, red onion, garlic & herbs and spices.
broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, red pepper, red onion, garlic & herbs and spices

here (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?68818-De-Facto-USA-s-Siberia-Bill&p=829345&viewfull=1#post829345).

From the above link:

Paul: "As a matter of basic facts, what I did was to focus on my water:

removing everything but the water, with a series of filters, including both reverse osmosis and distillation,
remineralizing it with sulfates (Willards), sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, magnesium bicarbonate, and trace minerals (Real Salt sole),
restructuring it with magnets, vortices and Precious Prills, and
drinking some water each day with added fulvic and humic concentrate.

Bob's note here: the Humic Concentrate and Fulvic acid components have been found in various springs which have "healing properties". (see mineral springs around the world, http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=moa&cc=moa&sid=95e3f6e828e116b80d4cccd93c806bc1&view=text&rgn=main&idno=AGR4448.0001.001 )

Anti-carcinogenic and tumor reducing factors are probable when DCA (dichloro-acetate) is formed, from the decaying humic organic substances are combined with weakly formed chlorides.

"Rain barrels, for example, do not provide any type of disinfection or filtration. Adding chlorine or iodine to water does not protect against chemicals, and some parasites are very chlorine tolerant. Boiling the water will kill germs but will not remove chemicals. "
My water source comes from an artesian well. I use the “Travel Berkey Water Filter (http://www.berkeyfilters.com),” and added the optional fluoride filters. Way back when, I stocked up on boat load of Brita filters. So I filter the water before I use the Berkey system. (See bottom for unpronounceable words on efficiency of filter. Note: this is before the fluoride filter added, which takes out even more unpronounceable words.)

For my drinking water, I add 1/2- 3/4 t of Himalayan salt and 1/2 organic lemon to 64 oz of H2O, which not only supplies 80+ minerals and elements, but it also makes the water alkaline.

How to Make Alkaline Water
[complete article (http://www.seasalthealth.com/how-to-make-alkaline-water-easy-at-home/)]

When you are acidic, your body will borrow minerals from organs, tissues, and bones to balance you out. These minerals you are robbing from yourself help to remove the acid from the body, putting a strain on the entire system. This can cause severe and prolonged damage if not treated or reacted to by you.
Being acidic on a regular basis can lead to

Obesity, Weight gain, and diabetes
Immune deficiency
Premature aging
Cardiovascular damage, constriction of blood vessels, and oxygen reduction
Joint pain and aching muscles
Kidney and bladder stones
Rapid free radical damage, possibly causing cancerous growth
Chronic fatigue

If you find you have an unbalanced ph, its time to take some action.

What is alkaline water?

Drinking alkaline water helps the body to detoxify. Toxins are acids, and to maintain a balanced ph while detoxifying you need plenty of alkaline buffers. Alkaline water has plenty of these buffers, and will help rid the body of acidic waste. Our blood actually enforces a balanced ph, and if the water you drink is too acidic, the body is unable to flush out the acidic waste from your cells and tissues. Your organs will deteriorate and disease will set in over time if the body is not allowed to flush out the waste.

The water you drink should have an alkalinity of 9-10 on the ph scale. The popularity of alkaline water in stores is on the rise. But beware, not all bottled water is created equal. Some brands of bottled water are acidic also, and who knows how long they’ve been sitting on that shelf!

Expensive brands of bottled water, such as Essentia, are actually alkaline. But they are also oxidizing. The water may look great in that plastic bottle, but the truth is maintaining the right alkaline ph levels for long periods of time is pretty much impossible. Bacteria will eventually grow in this environment, and gambling on that doesn’t seem wise. Drinking bottled water is just like eating vegetables out of a can. You are losing a lot of the essential benefits of water when drinking out of a plastic bottle.

What can be purchased safely? Handled safely? I shop the outer isles. Boxed foods are mostly dead foods and empty calories.

Here’s a quick list:

Fruits and vegetables, the main goal is to stay away from the GMO’s. I do not purchase salads in a bag because they pump them with ‘gas’ to ensure freshness.

I make my own juices with masticating juicer, which keeps the good stuff including the enzymes.

Kate’s butter where the cream comes from farms that do not treat their cows with artificial growth hormones

Local eggs where hens are fed with no animal by-products, preservative, no artificial hormones or antibiotics

Amazing Grass Green Superfood (green drink)

Ezekiel Bread that’s flourless, and sprouted from 100% whole grains. The grains are organic and certified.

Organic: flax and chia seeds, almond butter, sunflower seed butter, walnuts

When I’m with friends and family, I devour garbage foods. Then deal with the hives to hangovers for a couple of days.

MMS and hydrogen peroxide are great for killing pathogens, but I think you must use a surfactant to remove the pesticides. And lots of produce is coated with wax (for appearances), which seals in the contaminants. A soapy type veggie based surfactant is required to cut through the wax.

Last week my 2 year old was admitted to the hospital (actually transferred to a children's hospital) after his dad gave him some alfalfa sprouts (his dad also got sick).
I am using Prescript Assist probiotics to wipe out the gram negative bacteria. He still has diarrhea on and off but just got on the Prescript Assist this morning rather than the other probiotics he was getting. At the hospital they did a cat scan of his abdomen (because at the first hospital on the ultrasound it showed fluid outside his abdominal cavity) and he had an IV. No drugs etc; and I had brought some fruit and coconut water for him to eat while at hospital and he wasn't allowed to leave until they say him eating and drinking.

Another recall - Chia Seed Powder

http://www.utahpeoplespost.com/2014/06/21-cases-of-salmonella-in-chia-seed-powder-result-in-product-recall/

Salmonella in a health food powder. It has prompted the launch of a multistate health investigation, federal officials said on Friday.

Chia seed products have achieved the status of superfood, owing to a high nutrient levels.

Chia seed powder, commonly used in smoothies and snacks for its nutritional value, has sickened at least 21 people in 12 different states this month, according to the FDA.

States reporting illness are Arizona, New York, Utah, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, Michigan, Washington, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Some of the products being recalled are from:

Navitas Naturals,
Williams-Sonoma Inc,
Green Smoothie Girl,
Health Matters and

Chia contamination in Canada as well as US

http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/chia-powder-linked-to-salmonella-cases-in-canada-u-s-1.2675196

People on both sides of the Canada/U.S. border should avoid eating several recalled brands of chia seeds, health officials say.

34 cases of salmonella in 4 provinces being investigated.

Recently recalled brands in Canada include:

Madegood brand Chia and Berries Fruit & Nut Bars distributed in Ontario.
Organic Traditions chia seeds sold in various bulk sizes.
Noorish Superfoods chia seeds sold in Edmonton.

Public Health Agency of Canada said 34 cases of salmonella infection in British Columbia (6), Alberta (4), Ontario (22) and Quebec (2) have been investigated and linked to the consumption of chia seed powder.

Of the Canadian cases, five people were hospitalized, including four who’ve been discharged and have recovered or are recovering.

The agency didn’t have status information for one case. No deaths have been reported.

http://i.cbc.ca/1.2675167.1402688824!/cpImage/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/original_300/food-chia.jpg

The powder is often added to smoothies and sold at specialty stores, as well as online.

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection.

"These products have a long shelf life and may still be in people's homes. If you have these brands of dried sprouted chia seed powder products in your home, do not eat them."

UPDATE

From Canada's CDC - Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

Riverside Natural Foods Ltd. is recalling Madegood brand Chia and Berries Fruit & Nut Bars from the marketplace.

Is this the latest in strategy du jour?

When I see articles stacked up against wholesome foods contributing to sickness or death, it make me question if the industry is being taken down.

Healthy bodies withstand a lot. But many have weakened systems because of GMOs, chemtrails, fluoridated water, non-stopped zaps from electronics, radiation, and countless stresses.

I question if there’s a campaign to sabotage whole foods; problem, reaction, solution. Enforcement of stricter laws and regulations that’ll make it impossible for whole food companies to survive.

Just shut up, and shovel your GMOs. Chew before you swallow.

Just shut up, and shovel your GMOs. Chew before you swallow.

My "gut" feeling is there could be two things (but maybe more) happening with this food contamination stuff.

1) Deliberate food poisoning by terrorists. We all know Monsatan is the "officially sanctioned" big phara "terrorist", but there are/could be other "home grown" (domestic), and "foreign" terrorism hell bent on sabotaging and destabilizing the "western world's" belief that they can buy something off the shelf and expect safety, cleanliness, and of course convenience.

2) Widespread reporting of incidents, because PEOPLE now are more aware. When they are more aware, they take notice when something is wrong, instead of just "sucking it up", keeping quiet, getting sick and ya, dying in silence. We have the internet these days, TG, and we can report when something is up, and let all know to keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.

Any credence to 1 above?

http://www.cfr.org/homeland-security/targets-terrorism-food-agriculture/p10197 -

" [..] even without terrorism, food-borne diseases cause about 5,000 deaths and 325,000 hospitalizations each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Former Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson told a congressional terrorism panel in November 2001 that he was “particularly concerned” about food-related terrorism, which could involve either attempts to introduce poisons into the food supply or attacks that would ruin domestically cultivated crops or livestock.

"In 1984, members of an Oregon religious commune—followers of an Indian-born guru named Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh—tried to influence a local election by poisoning salad bars with salmonella bacteria to sicken voters. Although no one died, 751 people became ill."

(The sprout contamination was reported as E. Coli, a bacteria that is present is cow dung from infected cows, and Salmonella - Oregon/Idaho have been some of the hot-spot locations).

"A 1970s plot by Palestinian terrorists to inject mercury into Jaffa oranges reduced Israel’s exports of citrus fruit to Europe by 40 percent, and a 1989 incident in which a shipment of Chilean grapes to the United States tested positive for cyanide led to international trade suspensions that cost Chile $200 million."

In another thread in the Current News sub-Forum, we talked about Boko Haram's threat to attack western civilization. Are they making good on that threat? They didn't say exactly how, but one can assume with the ease of entry into the western world through "visitor's visas", it's not hard to transport cultivated biologicals and get them to local sleepers.

So yes, it does happen.

With item 2 above, doing a simple key-word search, increasing awareness with the internet - reporting..
http://www.unep.org/training/programmes/Instructor%20Version/Part_2/Activities/Interest_Groups/Public_Awareness/Core/Public_Environmental_Awareness_and_Education.pdf

"Environmental awareness" - being aware of what is happening in one's environment (surroundings), the use of social media, i.e. "Forums", and to talk about what's happening works better than any physically printed "news" service. Early on, gatherings called "Seminars" allowed for groups to meet to talk about (afterwards), some "key speaker's" (read "authority") observations. The internet allowed "anyone" with the keyboard, a connection to be an "authority" based on their "bravado", or "charisma", leading to a lot of "noise" to be sorted through. Self regulating such noise, had to be accomplished, to serve as the "review committee" that a Seminar Organization group would perform. There fore getting one's news from the "right" forum is essential.

The internet serves:
a) Educating Community and Traditional Leaders

Traditional, religious, and local community leaders can play an influential or even decisive role in how people act. This is particularly true in rural areas. Education of these leaders can assist in facilitating the implementation of dissemination of "what's really happening".

So if one is "ill", and searches to find out what's happening, one can report (as has been illustrated in this Thread). Hopefully then people will take a look around for anything out of the ordinary, take needed precautions (as suggested in this Thread) about proper food safety, and proper nutrition, proper water..

So AWARENESS it is assumed is a good thing. IDENTIFICATION of what is out of the ordinary is a good thing. TALKING about what's up is a good thing.

Maybe the issues with foods recently is a macro-micro vibration being explored in consciousness to learn how to be more conscious.

Another reference - http://www.informationbuilders.com/applications/missouri - Using the internet to improve public health issue awareness

" [..] our major goals is to speed the identification of potential health threats and their impact on state residents.

"We have found that information technology can play a strong role in responding to new public health problems and challenges.

"Specifically, we need to improve reporting of major diseases and health risks from a variety of sources, including medical providers, laboratories, and public health agencies.

"We must more effectively communicate up-to-the-minute data regarding major changes in health conditions such as the spread of new contagions or identification of abnormal susceptibility among state residents."

"The major hurdle is integrating diverse sources of information and universally communicating it. For instance, this is especially critical when new strains of flu or antibiotic-resistant microbes appear. "

We have pointed out in the Medical sub-Forum, precisely those points and showed how posting information about "outbreaks", or asking questions about how can a disease spread, showing those methods, helps with the dissemination goals as pointed out in the above link.

Recall hearing about the 4000 pounds of Beef potentially contaminated with Spongiform Encephalitis (Mad Cow Disease) ?

Well GEE...

Guess where it went mostly, Whole Foods Organic Beef

Whole Foods distribution center in Connecticut that supplies the market’s New England stores was found to have received the bulk of more than 4,000 pounds of beef that was recalled by the USDA this week, due to possible contamination with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) tissues associated with human variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) (Mad Cow Disease).

4 in Texas have recently died from this most yucky brain wasting disease. Like Alzheimers but way worse.. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/06/140604-world-mad-cow-disease-health-death/

"The recalled ribeye and other fresh beef products were packed and processed by Fruitland American Meat in Jackson, Missouri between September 2013 and April 2014. The issue was discovered when USDA inspectors were reviewing the companies slaughtering logs, and found that the manner in which the company was determining the age of the cattle was problematic.
The USDA requires brain and spinal tissue be removed from meat products from cattle 30 months and older because it can carry the protein that causes mad cow disease."

"[..] first reported in 1996 in the United Kingdom that has killed more than 220 people and prompted the slaughter of millions of cattle. Victims of the degenerative disease, which attacks the nervous system, suffer from depression and dementia before they die."

Massive Food Recall - Foster Farms

Happy fourth - but watch the chicken that you are eating..

LOS ANGELES -- A California chicken producer has issued its first recall since being linked to an outbreak of an antibiotic-resistant strain of salmonella that has been making people sick for more than a year, company and federal food officials said Thursday night.

U.S. Department of Food and Agriculture said it has found evidence directly linking Foster Farms boneless-skinless chicken breast to a case of Salmonella Heidelberg, an antibiotic-resistant strain of the disease that has sickened more than 500 people in the past 16 months and led to pressure from food safety advocates for federal action against the company.

The Federal Centers for Disease Control says 574 people from 27 states and Puerto Rico have been sickened since the outbreak began in 2013, leading to increasing pressure from food safety advocates for a recall or even an outright shutdown of Foster Farms facilities.

According to press reports, the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment is distributing more free hepatitis A vaccines Wednesday at its clinic in Fort Collins.

The shots are available for people who ate at Tortilla Marissa’s after June 17 because a worker at the restaurant has tested positive for the contagious hepatitis A virus.

Residents may get shots from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, but they must call (970) 498-6767 and make an appointment.

The shots will be disbursed at the health department’s clinic in Fort Collins, 1525 Blue Spruce Drive.

More than 800 of Tortilla Marissa’s customers have already received a vaccine this week, according to the health department. The agency will continue to provide free hep A shots at its three clinics through July 8 for anyone who consumed food or beverages at Tortilla Marissa’s within the past 14 days counting from the day that the shot is received.

The hepatitis A virus can lead to serious liver disease.

Also a huge percentage (almost half) of organic foods have been found to contain pesticides. If the produce looks too good to be organic, then it probably isn't.
http://www.thedailysheeple.com/organic-trade-groups-finding-pesticides-on-over-45-percent-of-organic-produce_062014

When the King George "W" Bush administration messed with organic certifying standards, I was jumping up and down but no one seemed to listen. Before King George and the drastically diluted standards for organic food, there was "Oregon Tilth" and "California Certified Organic" (I probably have the California certifying title slightly wrong.) These were stricter standards.

After the BushCheney Mob rolled through, organic labeling was to be regulated by the (corrupt) USDA.

Of course, Big Ag and the Big Ag Chemical Mafia want to sell the absolute most pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides possible - so what better way than having the crooked government lower the standards for judging what is "organic" (under the guise of protecting the public, of course.)

I suspect that due to rainwater contamination and wind, and the previous "steward" of whatever land you're food is coming from (even you're own!), that there is virtually no such thing as food that is 100.00% free of the Big Ag Chemical Mafia toxins.

I grow what I can, and buy from local organic growers I know...and then blindly trust that other "organic" labeled products that I buy have considerably less toxins than the stuff with no organic certification.

When the new labeling laws first came out I just laughed. "Organic" is now allowed to contain 5% non-organic? I challenge anyone to find an orange that would measure more than 5% pesticides by weight! The only way to actually get organic is with the label "100% certified organic." And then you have to trust that they are telling the truth.

Peaches, plums, organics, nectarines, and plumcots - recalled, LISTERIA - (same stuff that created the deaths from the Cantaloupes that were sold by Walmart).

The dates of concern are those packed between June 1 and July 12 - Recalled stone fruits could sicken 3-70 days after consumption.

Wawona peach (stone fruit) recall has expanded to Canada, and was triggered by positive listeria tests on peaches shipped to Australia.

The Wawona peach recall covers all of the USA.

If you get the symptoms, see your health care practitioner. Symptoms can be serious, leading to death in some cases.

Wawona Packing says on their website Q/A section:

Q. How and why did the company test for listeria monocytogenes?

On July 10, 2014, an Australian Importer notified Wawona Packing that it had detected trace amounts of listeria monocytogenes (LM) on three of the company’s peaches.

The fruit was released to the public in Australia because the LM content was within the limits allowed by Australia.

The United States has a zero tolerance for listeria monocytogenes (LM).

Upon being notified by Australia, Wawona Packing immediately retained a private laboratory to test both the Wawona Packing physical plant as well as product.

So all you folks in Australia eating California Peaches... Keep in mind the above...

Peanut Butter and Almond Butter now recalled

The great nutty product spreads we buy from these stores have these brand names:

The company, Hain Celestial Group Inc., said Tuesday that there have been reports of four illnesses that may be related to the nut butters.

They were sold under the brand names Arrowhead Mills peanut butters and MaraNatha almond butters and peanut butters.

Also being recalled were some lots of private label almond butter from grocers

Whole Foods,
Trader Joe's,
Kroger and
Safeway

A total of 45 production lots are affected.

They were sold in Canada, the Dominican Republic, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates as well as the U.S.

The Lake Success, New York, company said it learned of the contamination risk after routine FDA testing.

The Food and Drug Administration said it did not know how many jars of nut butters were recalled.

The company would not comment. Why doesn't the company conduct it's own cleanliness and safety tests for it's products? Something going on maybe? Or is this just another "accident" ?

Typical symptoms of salmonella infection are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. These symptoms generally develop within one to three days of exposure to the bacterium and may last for up to a week. While anyone can become ill from exposure to salmonella, health officials say the risk of infection is particularly high for children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

Salmonella in Sprouts in the NEWS again

Sweetwater Farms brand warning.

Thirteen people have become ill and five were hospitalized as the result of a salmonella outbreak in at least four states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Government officials say alfalfa sprouts produced by Sweetwater Farms of Inman, Kansas, are likely the source of the outbreak.

No deaths associated with the outbreak have been reported. The affected states include Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania.

Federal, state and local officials are working to confirm the source. In interviews, many of the people who got sick reported that they ate, or might have eaten, sprouts at restaurants before becoming ill.

During laboratory testing, irrigation water and alfalfa sprout samples from Sweetwater Farms LLC tested positive for salmonella. Though testing is still ongoing, officials say the information available indicates that alfalfa sprouts produced by Sweetwater Farms may be contaminated with salmonella and are not safe to eat.

As a result, Sweetwater Farms issued a voluntary recall of its alfalfa sprouts from lot 042016, the FDA reported.

Consumers are urged not to eat alfalfa sprouts produced by Sweetwater Farms. Restaurants and retailers should not sell these sprouts at this time.

We recommend that consumers do not eat and restaurants and other retailers do not sell or serve alfalfa sprouts produced by Sweetwater Farms at this time.

More sprouts, this time a different brand, E. Coli infections ..

Minnesota, Wisconsin E. coli Outbreak Linked to Jack & the Green Sprouts

An E. coli outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts produced by Jack & the Green Sprouts has sickened seven people in Minnesota and two in Wisconsin, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Consumers should not eat and retailers and restaurants should not sell or serve Jack & the Green Sprouts brand alfalfa sprouts as E. coli can cause serious illness.

The sprouts at issue were packaged in a plastic clamshell with a “brightly colored round label on top that notes the sprout variety,” according to the Minnesota Department of Health. They may be mixed with other sprout varieties.

Located in River Falls, Wis., Jack & The Green Sprouts distributes alfalfa sprouts to states in the upper Midwest. Those sickened purchased the contaminated sprouts at a variety of locations including grocery stores, restaurants, salad bars and from commercial food service operations.

Minnesota health officials have used DNA “fingerprinting” to identify seven cases of E. coli O157:NM infection from January to early February. Five of the seven Minnesotans sickened, who range in age from 18 to 84 years old, are female. Four of them are residents of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, three live in greater Minnesota. Two people were hospitalized, both have recovered, according to state health officials.

Two cases in Wisconsin are also considered part of this outbreak. Neither of them required hospitalization.

Minnesota and Wisconsin health officials are working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate the outbreak. The FDA and state officials are collecting and testing samples to determine the source of the outbreak. The investigation is considered ongoing as “the extent of the product contamination is unknown,” according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

(We've discussed the E. coli O157 strain of the infection in earlier posts.)

Oysters and NoroVirus - (never saw that one coming)

An Oregon norovirus outbreak that has sickened 17 people has been linked to oysters from Yaquina Bay, according to the Oregon Health Authority. All of those sickened ate the oysters at Lincoln County restaurants between February 12 and February 14. One person was hospitalized, all have recovered.

Tests performed on an unopened jug of oysters collected from a restaurant tested positive for the same strain of norovirus found in stool samples from three of those sickened.

A recall has been issued by Oregon Oyster Farms Inc. in Newport for raw, ready-to-eat shucked oysters sold in half-gallons, one-pint plastic tubs and 10-ounce plastic jars, with sell-by dates of February 19 through March 8 and for oysters sold in mesh bags containing five dozen in-shell oysters with harvest dates of February 5 through February 15.

Whole Foods is doing recall on CHEESE (again)

Whole Foods has recalled Maytag raw milk blue cheese, citing possible listeria contamination.

The company said no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, which is nationwide.

Recent testing by the state of Iowa revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in two lots of products.

Maytag Dairy Farms suspended production and distribution while the cause of the problem is determined, according to Whole Foods.

The FDA says listeria can cause people to get so sick they have to be hospitalized. For particularly vulnerable people, the illness can be fatal.

The people most at risk are pregnant women, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems from HIV, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease and transplants.

The FDA also says listeria bacteria can spread to other foods once it's brought into the home. For example, listeria can grow and spread throughout foods in the refrigerator.

In October, Whole Foods announced a nationwide recall of cut, wrapped and weighed Papillon organic Roquefort cheese, similarly citing possible listeria contamination.
